Banx - Correct if we continue to accommodate Tavs with Aarons at LB then we will get a severe doing soon - the boy looks uncomfortable there also how many more times must we be stuck ballwatching - the slow Dowell slept when supposedly marking just as Tavs does on a regular basis - good teams get built on defence and ours is shaky at best - hopefully RM is not wearing his Stevie Wonder glasses and does something about this soon or I fear the worst - result was paramount so TF for that!

Completely agree with John on the positives. RM made the big changes - Gas man came on and got the goal, 5 at the back with Max on the right and Jefte on the left. Instantly looked more settled and saw out the game.

So Aarons was really poor and what do fans do blame Tavernier for it. John is right it was bringing Jefte on and getting rid of Aarons from left back which changed it. If Tav had been left at RB we still would have been okay.
the issue was that the defence made passes into the feet of midfield and forwards and it didn't stick. therefore Pana were on the attack again and our defence was under constant pressure. any defence in any team in the world will give up chances if they are constantly defending.
so our team once they get longer than 5 weeks will get better at receiving ball in tight spaces and moving it on. early in the process and we still won 3-1 on aggregate.

For their goal Tavs and Dowell were holding the line so the guy would have been offside by about a yard. the issue was that Djiga and Aarons on the other side weren't so played the guy onside. I know when I played who got the blame for that.

We can't just accommodate the weak links n hope for the best that was a big problem last season n we lost many a game because of it

So glad were through because i must say over both legs that defence gave me the absolute fear i cringe everyime we start playing from the back, hospital balls, standing waiting for it sumtimes not even looking we need that back line fixed ASAP. Lads were very poor last night until the subs came on and we finally started playing a bit. Yes early days but we can all see where the issues are and where we need to improve/ recruit i really hope we get it sorted soon otherwise fans will get on their backs and confidence/ morale will nosedive.

Tav - Dowell WAS asleep! - initially 2 yards from their scorer (unaware he was there) and with his feet in cement ended up 5 yards from him when the lad moved and scored - ownership of area and defending should be from everyone in the team.

Natural left back needed to replace the outbound Yimaz.
Left sided centre back needed, preferably experienced, with Proper and Davies hopefully away.
If Igamane is sold, a forward to compete with Dessers and Dani.
We did look more solid when Martin changed the back line but I thought our goal nocked the stuffing out of them and they looked like they had run out of energy after that.
Work in progress at the moment, so let's just enjoy the result and European football now until after the year which was most important.

Last night mirrored a lot of the issues from last season.
We pretty much had zero pace in the starting line up, which let Pana hold a high defensive line and pin us back for over an hour.
Once we brought Gassama and Jefte on - we had pace and you could see it pushed them back.
In addition, bringing Dessers on meant we had someone willing to run behind (albeit not exactly at great speed) - which helped open the game up and create some space for our midfield.

Great to get through the tie. Like EHL I worry about it overall lack of pace across the team. Hopefully we can rectify that with a few more signings soon. As for the CBs, I think our biggest challenge there is the style RM wants to play. He's telling these to take chances and keep passing in certain shapes. That's not going to be the last time we see bloopers like that purely because that's how he wants to play. I don't think Cody would help personally, but bringing in another decent ball player with good recovery pace could.

Another thing worth factoring in is the heat.
It must have been absolutely draining - fresh legs and specifically pace is the last thing you want to be defending against late on in a game that Panthinaikos had to push.

EHL - bang on! the runs behind allowed out balls from mid and defence so minimising hospital balls - stopped the ball pinging straight back at us when players lost ball or got caught in midfield or close to our defence - fairly simple and effective but needs pace to make it truly fruitful?.

For me Danilo can't play the line striker role in these types of games. He needs players around him to get the best out of him.
Dessers is closest we have to be able to play that role.
The amount of times we give the ball away is criminal. The back 4 give me the fear.

It's tough to judge the full defensive system until all the pieces are in their correct places. I do believe we will get a proper LB, which should result in Max moving to RB, and I expect another CB. In terms of midfield it seems we are seeking some speed on the wings which I think will also help in stopping marauding opposition and their own high lines. Adding a young get quicker striker with an ability to hold up play too would be a good call.
We are very much in transition, have a winnable next CL tie and it seems (according to RM), a team that's not near near to being finished in terms of player incoming/ outgoing yet, so I am keeping my positive hat on.

The main thing is we got through. can't see the front 3 that started being our main front 3 starting every week.
Curtis needs his minutes managed and will be a back up.
Dowell will move on by end of the window i hope and Danillo won't be first choice striker by end of the week if what's been reported on here happens.
Obvious RM doesn't rate ridvan and sees Jefte as a back up so can see a new first choice LB coming in.
Now guaranteed at least EL group i think buisness in the transfer window will ramp up. hopefully ?.

No you don't follow the man into the space beyond the line you have created otherwise you play everyone onside. Dowell knew where he was but also that he should be offside as Dowell was holding the line. Aarons and Djiga didn't come out as quick and weren't looking at the line so he was onside. only 2 players at fault here.
agree we need to get that pace into the team and more bought if needed. don't need to be fast as Dessers just willing to make this clever runs in behind. occupies the defenders and stops them pushing up and making it difficult for us to play the passing game we want due to lack of space.

Angus I agree that Aarons and djiga didn't step out and should've but Dowell is looking along that line because the ball comes from the opposite side to him so as much as the other 2 are partly to blame imo Dowell should recognize they haven't moved in time and follow his man. It was poor defending all round imo.

Agree Re: Danilo not being suited to playing a line striker role. I think he'd shine when beside another (thought he and Igamane linked to week at times last year) . While I'm not a massive fan of dessers, he's more suited to the role. I'm guessing his limited game time so far is at least in part a way of trying to incentivise him to move on for a decent fee to allow the wider rebuild.

I know we have no played a lot together but a bit bewildered by tactics. Aaron set for a fall. Not his fault out of position. Soapy was poor. The tactics but. We did not need to play like . We are that 2-0 up and that stile could have killed us.
Full backs pushing up an in. Why? Midfield were all over the place.
Some of the slackness in play, ball retention. Losing possession was school boy stuff. Still can't worry out his stile, what he wanted to do. I said he has to Christmas before I would make any judgement but that was total naivety by Russell Martin. Worrying.

For me i still think out of current squad Dessers should be up front esp for euro games much better suited to that type of game, big lad gets chances he should start ahead of Danilo everytime. He did more with his wee stint last night than danilo over both legs. Granted team had changed a bit with Gassama (legend btw) and Jefte on but i'd suggest Gassama and another decent RW with pace would be laying them on a plate for Dessers up top through the middle. Ok not 100% he would score them but i love his attitude and work rate i'd be happy if he stays.

That was absolutely awful last night, first half in particular was horrendous ( for the fourth game in a row ) . We got away with it but god knows how . The back 4 is a shambles, Djiga making terrible decisions when passing out, Souttar struggling on the left side of the defence and the same for Aarons and Tavernier doesn't seem to know where he is supposed to be and as a result no longer gets forward to provide crosses . I only hope that Martin was defending his players last night because if he actually saw what he said he saw then we are in trouble. I certainly wasn't proud of that performance and I'm amazed that the fans at the game were singing his name without get tae eff after it.

It's clear to see we are very off balance with Aarons paying lb. While Tav continues to make horrific mistakes. What's the betting he starts at rb at mwell. Surely the manager can see what everyone else can see and we need max at rb. Even move Tav into cb which we've seen him perform not bad in.
Get a winger for the right as dowell just can't play there. Gives us more balance with gasamma on the left.
Over the moon to be through to next round as I honestly say watching they mistakes and thinking we are going to come undone here.

However happy for 12th man to remind me of the horrific mistakes he made. so change a player for a professional who can't even make a decent stab at playing on opposite side of defence. so yes get rid of Aarons at LB as he is a weak link; prefer Jefte there but don't reward that by moving someone else who has been decent to accommodate him (I think that is the phrase fans use) .
there were players who were poor and invisible but despite that they get no criticism but Tavs and Dowell do. not on IMO.
