MrPotatoHead has written an article entitled, Assessing James Tavernier's Stats At Glasgow Rangers

Mr ph congratulations on an excellent piece. Well done.

good data but surely you have to put it in context by direct comparison with other players doing the same job. indeed you could read those stats and say his long ball passing is improving year on year.
still though thanks Tav but time to part company, but let's hope we have someone as loyal and better coming in to replace him.

Nice article MPH. I've been saying for years Tav is not a defender.

just popped in today to feel a certain feeling of deja vu. what fans need to realise is that they have an opinion of players and those are worthless (sorry) and I include my own in that.
what is apparent is that for 10 years managers (7 permanent) have played Tavernier at RB and even Rohl continues to do that. yes there may be no other options but no manager has gone out and tried to buy a better RB defender. so is the conclusion that Tav plays the role in the way that every manager wants him to play it or very close to it. are managers willing to balance his defensive frailties as they are far out-weighed by his attacking virtues. so have an opinion but balance it with the one that matters (the manager) who doesn't agree with it. yes we haven't won much but even despite that the next manager has still seen him as an asset otherwise they would have replaced him or sold him.
re the stats worth considering that he attempts 56 passes per game which compared to Raskin who only attempts 41 and ask yourself whether our playmaker should be making less passes than our RB. the point is there are many other things to look at ahead of James Tavernier whatever you think of him.

Good to see you back Angus.

Welcome back Angus.
Or just maybe, 6 of the 7 managers deserved the sack as they continually over looked Tavs defensive frailties for what he gives going forward.
I could see that point of view if Rangers were winning domestic trophies consistently under all the previous incumbents.
They weren't and defence has been a huge issue in all those 10 years.

Glad seeing you back Angus, hope you're fighting fit mate?.

mph, I could agree with that opinion if each of those managers had tried to replace him with a defensive RB but they didn't. Stirling was bought but has been injured so often/long they would have tried again. Martin loaned Aarons but didn't play him there.
I suspect that managers see we face a low block so want our RB to attack more than they defend. what every manager has failed to do has been to find a way to cover that gap our attacking FBs leave when they go forward; remember the criticism of Jefte and now Meghoma as well so it isn't just RB where the issue lies. so the criticism should sit with those managers or perhaps the defensive midfield pivots who are tasked with covering the FBs forays forward. not since Ryan Jack has anyone managed that.
If they wanted Tav to defend they would tell him to sit at RB and only defend. if he didn't they would drop him, that hasn't happened. so not one manager has done that so Tav plays as he is asked it would appear. again an opinion but the evidence is there to support it.

Welcome back Angus hope your well mate.

Very good to have you back posting Angus, hope you're well pal ?I absolutely agree with you regarding tav mate ? Are all these manager's who continue to rate and play tav wrong ?I don't think so.

cheers guys. not arguing about ability as a defender although I think he gets the flak purely for us winning nothing in the time he was here. My argument is you can't blame the player for 7 managers choosing to play a style which uses his attacking ability and not just asking him to sit in and defend.
I wait for the day when he is gone and fans are complaining our next RB doesn't get forward enough to support attack.

Great to see u posting, hope all good with u and family.
Don't really agree with your take on Tav, if rhays the standard re aging players and very poor players all over the team I believe in my lifetime we will see 10 before we win 56.
God I hope i'm wrong.
