We'll see how he gets on without M. Beale beside him unless he's there, he did nothing at Villa, and went to Saudi and did nothing then in a last minute panic brought in M. Beale before the both of them were sacked.

07 Oct 2025 23:07:33
Kip add culshaw.

07 Oct 2025 23:21:29
What you hearing John, done, nearly done, ideas/ talks advanced to a decent degree where back room staff is on the agenda?

07 Oct 2025 23:37:00
Gerrard has just done an interview with Rio Ferdinand explaining what went wrong at Villa and Saudi! He's said he wouldn't go into another club unless it's a big one that can compete for trophies and he can get his full coaching staff he trusts, he hasn't had this since he was last with us - this is football, sometimes good managers can have things go wrong!

07 Oct 2025 23:45:15
If it is Gerrard and he gets his backroom team spot on again, I'm not ruling out us winning the league, Celtic ain't a good side, Rangers are 11/ 1 just now.

08 Oct 2025 02:26:44
Gerrard done well at Villa when he took over from 15th to 7th or 8th before a bad start and sacked after 7 games in next season.
Like everyone the Dubai experience was new to everyone and with their foreigner rule where you have to play 7 players from the association it was always going to be a tough gig.
Anyway what did he do at Rangers? Well he took over from a team finishing 40 points begin Celtic who had been ko in Europe off Progress Niedikorn in a qualifier to establishing us as a decent standard Europa league side and regularly lost by 4 or 5 every time they played Celtic.
He started with bosmans and loan players until he generated more funds to strengthen his squad.
When he won the league he came up against a domestic side who had won 12/ 12 trophies and not only beat them he went unbeaten in league and ko them out of the Scottish cup.
He wasn't backed financially when he rightly felt he needed to in order to progress and even ko the Newcastle job and left 4 points clear in league when Villa came calling.
He always said he would be enticed to go back down south so no surprise when he left.
We have now got to a stage where he is the perfect fit for Rangers and he is the perfect fit for us.
He needs a team that is challenging for honours like I said before Barry came home that players with high standards struggled but could get the best out of a mediocre side in big games yet he struggled with lesser players playing for mid table mediocrity.
Gerrard though has an aura and a belief that he can compete to win trophies like he done as a player as the only player to score in an English League Cup, FA cup, Europa League and Champions league final and to win the lot!
Management and playing is a different ball game but this appointment is much less risky as it was the 1st time he was appointed, his man management style and the Auro and respect he commands in addition to his experience of the role and contacts in the game he has with a better financial footing makes him by far the best appointment Rangers can make.
We should be buzzing now that we don't have the financial constraints we have had for the past decade but instead we have had the negative impact of appointing a manger who was not a fans favourite and was clearly out of his depth.
Rangers fans are great when things are going well but when we are not happy it's a hard place to play at Ibrox.
Majority of Fans will get behind him and he will be hungry to succeed and knows what it takes to succeed.
Is he better than we he started 1st time around? Absolutely ? Are we in a better financial position? Yes of course we are? Have board showed they will back the manager? Again much better than when he had 1st bite of the cherry.
Walter is by far the best manager we have had in my 44 year old lifetime and although I wouldn't dare compare him to the legend what I will say is he has earned the right to bring us back again and I can't wait to see if that's who the board appoint as it shows us they can get a big name in and that they know what they are doing.

That backro team is absolute spot on.

I suggested Reid would be a great move last nig your but never expected that to happen. As a wish more than a rumour.

That's a good backteam. I'd get David back into the club too.

Spot on fifty6 ? Let's Go.

08 Oct 2025 07:55:58
I thinkr a part of you post Is well written fifty but a lot just opinion. His record is poor since he left so we can't actually say he 100% improved. Time will tell if appointed. By that train of thought so was RM. So not 100% the perfect fit. Has he still got that aura. I am not sure. He is effectively still unemployed. Noone else seems to be coming in for him well big clubs. He is waiting for the right club. The financial footing is better granted I hope he uses it wisely but we are not Liverpool. That was the issue last time.
Earned the right, sorry he hasn't . He jumped ship. He needs us as this is his way back into management. His career is faultering.
He needs us. Do we need him time will tell.
The club are shopping at the thrift store. Those that are available.
It concerns me that we are not looking at candidates that are the best for us . What I mean is a lot of guys in. Employment as well.
Who do we actually want let's go abd get them. If in employment or not

We don't seem to be looking at that.

If he gets job. I hope he absolutely nails it and I will gladly put hands up and acknowledge I was wrong.

Whoever comes in needs to get team fighting now. I think the league us still there. Forever hopefull.
We can't be waiting 3 years for league.

08 Oct 2025 08:00:58
Fantastic john, absolutely delighted with this backroom team all know the club and what to expect and of course what's expected of them ?.

08 Oct 2025 08:05:17
What do you mean financial restraints aren't there. of course they are. in fact he will come in and not be able to build on the team that is already there. do you honestly think that he will get 2 years to turn this round. not from the fans this time that's for sure.

08 Oct 2025 08:12:32
Love to see Neil McCann as part of that team.

08 Oct 2025 08:23:24
Vert good post, fifty6.

08 Oct 2025 08:30:34
Just had a cheeky wee tenner on that MyStar.

08 Oct 2025 08:35:06
Always find it interesting how football has evolved to the point that we as fans are now debating coaching staff.

I've even seen some picking 'midfield' coaches - which to my knowledge isn't a thing.

What most Head Coaches need in their direct Assistants is diversity and 'translators' - not in terms of language, but in terms of having someone who can pull all the relevant information from the wide range of support teams, i. e. various medical teams, sports scientists, data analyst, tactical analyst, sports psychologists - and translate this into actionable intel for decision making.

Last time round McAllister was the Diversity, as his personality and character was the complete opposite of Gerard - this is crucial when dealing with a squad of 30 professionals.

Also, Beale was the translator as he had an incredible understanding of all things sports science and could break this down in a manner that let Gerard make decisions.

You'll see this dynamic across most successful coaching groups.

08 Oct 2025 09:01:32
What do we actually know about the reason why Gerrard knocked us back in the summer? Assuming the rumours are correct and it wasn't a case of we never asked him.

I'm very wary of bringing back a guy who left us high and dry, and flattered to deceive but I do think he'll set expectations to this group that they haven't been demanded of yet.

08 Oct 2025 09:31:27
Good post fifty6. Wish I'd written that.

A wee snippet I came across lately RE: Billy Reid.

Former Hamilton boss Alex Neil delivered a piece on Walter Smith's Champions League / UEFA cup final run as part of a session on the UEFA Pro Licence course.

"[Smith] was talking about the importance of tactics and how you set up your team, " Neil told Sky Sports.

"And he gave us a story about that great UEFA Cup run that they had. They played Barcelona at home [in the Champions League group stages] and he spoke about how he was setting his team up

"And where he got it from was Billy Reid's Hamilton Accies team that had played Rangers!

"Everybody I tell that story, they just look at me as if to say 'what? '

"But that's the humility that Walter had. To stand up there in front of 30 coaches and managers in the room, and describe how the Rangers manager got to the UEFA Cup final taking tips from Hamilton Accies and Billy Reid, that speaks volumes. "

It's been a fair amount of time since Reid was nurturing the likes of James McCarthy and McArthur at Hamilton, and his CV since his comparatively excellent time at Hamilton is an interesting one. Gives me hope about this one.

If it is SG, what would folk think if he wanted to bring Beale back into the fold, would that be a deal breaker and rule him out?!

08 Oct 2025 10:01:53
Billy knows a player for sure.

08 Oct 2025 10:17:28
Yo-Jimbo, Billy Reid is more knowledgeable on the game than most give him credit for, would love him involved.

08 Oct 2025 10:25:10
Gerard didn't jump ship mate. Have U not saw Dave Kings statement? Read up on that it might change your mind.

08 Oct 2025 10:47:53
EHL what you mean they played in midfield as players. So they are CLEARLY midfield coaches. If only it was that simple.

08 Oct 2025 10:51:25
Ehl Billy Reid is the Beale in that set up mate.

He's the tactics man for sure. Common knowledge I thought was that he's a great tactician like Beale was.

08 Oct 2025 11:35:13
Bazbear it would be rude not too mate. Lol.

08 Oct 2025 11:42:20
Ehl all Gerrard needs to tell the doors science team is when you give me your detailed report can you also break it down in laymen's terms for me same with every other department.

08 Oct 2025 12:07:04
Stevie big majority don't give his the credit he deserves though mate, not talking about them in the game, am talking about your average fan, you'll know this because you know your stuff.

08 Oct 2025 12:07:26
Fifty what you on about Dubai experience? He was in Saudi mate that's not Dubai.
It's also a myth SG wasn't backed financially it's utter bs. He was 100% backed financially 70 players he brought in through out his time were they all frees? He was told to sell a star player to be able to buy he refused. Let's not make up lies to try and put point across.

08 Oct 2025 12:58:13
I thought Gerrards interview with Rio was very telling and confirmed the way he works . He has others around him that he trusts and respects and let's them get on with the things he's not good at. He also used to have individual coaches dealing with specific areas of the team and that mostly worked . If he returns and can bring back most of that backroom team that would be ok . Not sure Gary Mac would want to come back and really would want to avoid Beale returning unless it was an absolute deal breaker.

08 Oct 2025 13:06:17
Stevie, it's not about being the 'tactics' man - there is actually a team responsible for tactical analysis. You need someone who can translate the Head Coaches requirements to that team, and also translate the output from that team, and combine it with the output from multiple other teams (medical, performance etc etc) to enable the Head Coach to make decisions.

This is where Beale excelled.

Btw, I'm not saying Reid can't - just trying to shed some light on those roles.

RFC22. I'm afraid its not that simple - would be great if it was.

08 Oct 2025 13:11:46
EHL, know you're not as close to the club anymore, but any names being mentioned that haven't been discussed on here? think you'd mentioned someone had mentioned Bo Svenson to you, that you respected!

08 Oct 2025 13:59:29
EHL, i'll ask you this mate. Do you think there's a very good chance that Derek McInnes will become the next Rangers manager if Gerrard for whatever reason didn't take the job? ?

08 Oct 2025 14:06:15
Drew, I withdraw myself from the management chat as someone I know very closely has been contacted to be involved.

08 Oct 2025 14:47:17
Thanks EHL!

08 Oct 2025 16:03:15
Why is billy reid being mentioned so much is their a link too gerrard? i've maybe missed something.

08 Oct 2025 16:11:43
Shagger, Dave King's said he was forced out but no proof. How was he forced to resign?
So he left Rangers in the November and joined Aston Villa in November. A premier league club but was forced out.
