Is Gerrard the man?
1/ Appeasing the fans.
2/ Respect from the players.
3/ Stability for the club.
4/ Beat Celtic a few times.
5/ Won a league.
6/ Knows the league.
How is that any criteria for picking any manager?
1/ The fans expect the custodians of the club to attract the best candidate for the role. Not what they deem an easy option.
2/ Never mind players respecting the manager - they should be respecting the club and the lifeblood - the fans. It's a prerequisite of any player top give their all.
3/ The future of the club under the 49er's stewardship should set us up for years to come with the correct appointment.
4/ It isn't enough to just beat Celtic - we need to win trophies consistently.
5/ See 4.
6/ Quality managers can adapt to the league and players at their disposal.
Take his name out of the equation and his managerial record wouldn't even get him a foot in the door. It's short sightedness from the 49ers who got it spectacularly wrong with Martin.
It's self-preservation by Thelwell and Stewart who are also in the fan's sights after the disastrous bigging up of Martin.
Rangers' philosophy:-
"The more things change, the more they remain the same".
Fingers crossed if Gerrard is appointed ( and I will get behind him ), he gets off to a flier.
We need to see progression.
We need to see passion from the players.
More importantly we need to start winning games.
Because for all the majority may want him, if we can't see the above improvements, he will soon find out how fickle the Rangers fans can be.

Good post again MPH. Always very informative and to the point.
I believe Gerrard is man. Born winner, Great leader and he gets the best out his players. He also gets OUR club.

MPH it's basically 1 appeasing some fans. They are trying to get some back on side as they know they have made a rip roaring Kant of it.
It's making me worry about the people that own us.
Our defence still needs a complete rebuild which I find astonishing from the summer.

Strom, let SG build a solid defence next summer like he had last time. Souttar should be moved on imo. Mid to front is sound i think. Mayve a bit light in the 9 position. Danilo needs to leaves and chermiti won't feature much.

It is all well and good wanting a top tier manager to come in and win every game and trophy but here in the real world and at the level Rangers are currently at, that is not an option.
Gerrard has done amazing things as a player and deserves his respect and any player worth their salt with give it to him.
Russell martin was a rather rubbish player and an even worst manager/ coach therefore could not get the respect or effort out of players.
Simple as that.
Now I am not 100% in belief that Gerrard is the man for Rangers long term but i do think he has the attitude and assets to get a job done and get Rangers back in some type of respectable shape, in which we start winning games of football and give the fans something to cheer for again.

He slipped out back door under cover of darkness which didn't impress me - he won one trophy from possible 9 at Gers which was in a very unusual and unique year - he didn't improve Aston Villa - he didn't set heather on fire in Saudi so much though he will garnish more respect than RM he will have to get this team gelling and quick style before he wins me over completely.
Just as all managers before I and other fans will back him and give him his chance but IMHO we are owed. We need a structure in place too which will allow for future managers so hopefully we don't bend to any ludicrous demands and give him carte blanch re signings/ wage structure as we need to be self sufficient and progressive in selling market ( concerns re Thelwell in this area I must say) when he eventually disappears once more. If it is you Stevie then please win us over by results/ play and consistency and we will back you to the hilt?.

I agree with most of what you said, MPH. Gerrard wouldn't be my first choice probably.
However, I do respect him and would get behind him. He has a winning mentality and drive which I think we need at Rangers, I don't think Martin had that.
With the right coaching team it could work. For me Muscat (if he was interested) has the better CV however.

Nope all he done was win the league. He is a born winner? Not as a manager as he has failed at 2 clubs 100%. It's debatable if he was a success at Rangers or not.
Paul am hoping whoever the manager is will get my backing but try and sort defence in Jan not the summer.
