Walter Smith went to Everton and had 3 unsuccessful years winning hee haw with a win rate of 28.5% and yet we welcomed him back with open arms and the rest is history. I'm not holding unsuccessful times at Villa and Saudi against Gerrard.
With the right backroom team I think he can be a success at Rangers 2nd time around and despite my earlier reservation, I'd welcome him back. I don't see the clamour for rohl or Muscat.

Correct, unbelievable last season from Gerrard Sir, some fail at other clubs but he never failed at Rangers, he had us playing the best football since we returned from the lower leagues.
His team made the Europa final costing under 15m.

You should wash your mouth out with soap and water comparing the late great Walter Smith to Gerrard at Rangers.
Smith - 11 seasons over 2 spells. 33 trophies up for grabs.
10 titles.
5 Scottish Cups.
6 League Cups.
Lost the UEFA Cup Final.
Gerrad - 3 seasons. 9 trophies up for grabs.
1 title.

Totally agree, every one of the managers being linked has failed and been sacked somewhere. McInnes is being praised for his record at smaller Scottish clubs and his great start to the season, but he was sacked by WBA and by Aberdeen after winning only one trophy even though we were in the lower divisions.
Gerrard is the only one of the candidates that knows what it takes to win the Scottish Premiership with Rangers.

How about you hold his unsuccessful time at Rangers to account then? Stevie G. is nowhere near the man or manager Walter Smith is either.

I would absolutely welcome Steven Gerrard back as our manager if it was indeed him and i stuck up for him when he left because i was told the main reason he left and took the first big club job, that became available which of course was villa. ?
He had too much ambition to kick on and crush Celtic for the parks at the start of 21/22 season ? My first choice would be Kevin Muscat, but i think Gerrard would be a very good appointment for us and i'd be intrigued to see who his full backroom team would be ?.

Don't think he was comparing him with Walter. Just pointing out that other managers can fail away from Rangers. Nobody compares to Walter.

Gerrard has done more belly slides across the dressing room floor.
08 Oct 2025 13:49:48
Didn't think the op held Gerrard remotely close to Smith.

WSL - and McInnes wasn't too far away from relegation with Kilmarnock last season.
He's enjoying a purple patch at the moment. Hearts will be second by Jan 1st and 3rd in May, at best.
Right now, for me, it's Gerrard and only Gerrard.

There was me thinking Walter was the Scotland manager when we asked him to come back.
I can't speak for everyone, but I think the majority of the people that don't want Gerrard back are basing that on his time here than the success after he left us.

The season we won the title had no fans at Ibrox, Celtic collapsed and were the worst they had ever been. He burst our budgets to such an extent, neither he nor his successor had any money available to spend and that further hampered our CL games (if you remember the team we were having to field) because we were skint.
a few in the know will tell you how close we were getting to admin 2 because of our overspend and had the beady eyes of UEFA FFP panel watching us closely and ready to pounce.
People claiming he left Rangers in a healthy position which was true, but that also was on the back of Celtic replacing their manager, who was finding his feet but quickly reversed their fortunes.
i will get behind whoever it is, but i don't want to be in the position at the end of this season we are looking again for another new manager and i think that's exactly where we will be if we get SG onboard.

Geesa so you want me to believe that Gerrard was dishing out and dealing with players contracts and wages etc. The reason the club were in such a bad state was down to the idiots in charge allowing such high wages when they knew fine well we could not sustain them, absolutely nothing to do with Gerrard.
08 Oct 2025 15:24:22
Geesa,
Then it will fall on the board who appoint the next man if it doesn't work or not given the time and backing.
We shall wait and see what unfolds.

Season we won the league, we played our best football for yonks and had a defensive unit solid as a rock in only losing 13 goals in 38 games, that is the reason we won the league undefeated.
08 Oct 2025 15:44:59
Totally agree with you there Geesa. My only real concern.

At no point did I compare Smith and Gerrard achievements, so I'll pass on the soap thanks, I'm merely pointing out that even the greatest managers can be a failure elsewhere. Gerrard may or may not be a success second time around, but I still think he should be given the opportunity.
