Gerrard was the right manager at the right time when he was appointed in 2018.
We had finished 3rd in the league the previous season.
Embarrassed in Europe by Progres.
Moral and stature of the club was at an all-time low.
A high-profile name at the club was badly needed.
What Gerrard achieved can't be underestimated with the size of the task at hand.
2018 season - a turnover of 19 players in and out ( including loans and youth ) .
2019 season - a turnover of 26 players in and out ( including loans and youth ) .
2020 season - a turnover of 33 players in and out ( including loans and youth ) .
2021 season ( summer only ) - a turnover of 16 players in and out ( including loans and youth ) .
People say he wasn't backed - he was to the best of our ability financially at the time.
He won one of the most important titles in our history and built a decent reputation in Europe that gave us many wonderful Europa League Thursdays.
But we were knocked out the cups by:- Aberdeen ( twice ), Celtic, Hearts, St Mirren and St Johnstone.
If I had to come to you with a blind CV for a new manger who had won 1 title in 7 years, lasted less than a year in his 2nd job and left by mutual consent in his 3rd, would you even consider him for the Rangers managerial position at the current time?
We aren't welcoming back the second coming of Walter Smith.
It's a definite no from me.

MPH who you hearing wants it just out of curiosity or who would you like to see?
08 Oct 2025 09:56:57
Correct MPH, that's what I said weeks ago and was told I didn't have a clue about Rangers.
Take the love of him for delivering that title away and it does not make good reading.

The concern for me right now is -
Seemingly lack of options for this and the summer manager search. Anyone been really excited with any genuine contender over the last 5 months?
Why wasn't Gerrard appointed in the summer if we're genuinely sounding him out. Did he decline us? If so, will he again or what was the reason? This guy done a decent job, then left us while Celtic were on the ropes with Ange ball. He left and we gave Ange time to get the game going, my view is we would have won, or been very close, to the title that season.

Gerrard is a no from me.
08 Oct 2025 10:07:50
I mean we are currently 8th in the league and have been embarrassed in europe by brugge and both results against genk and graz were also quite embarrassing really.

100% correct MPH great post ?.

If SG is appointed then it's the last option to keep some fans happy and try and get them back inside and the complete opposite of what they said in there message to fans the other day.

At the end of the day all we have is opinions, who we want and don't want. I personally want Kevin Muscat as manager. If the club see fit to appoint Steven Gerrard then he will get my 100 % backing. I feel the fanbase will not be patient with whoever comes in. The new manager will have to have a strength to deal with the type of reaction that will come if we lise the first games of his tenure. We need to give whoever comes in time as he will still be working with the same players although hopefully he will start the best players in each position unlike RM. Hopefully if it is SG it will be the end for Thelwell.
08 Oct 2025 10:20:03
I get the impression that managers aren't exactly queuing up to take the job, appointing RM was always going to be a disaster so thanks to Thelwell and Stewart we have had worldwide publicity for all the wrong reasons.
Rohl is highly regarded but would he risk his career coming to us as we currently are, if now I wouldn't. We need stability and leadership, Gerrard will offer this. The defence is a disaster bit we have some good players going forward they've just been mismanaged.
We were all buzzing with Gerrard until he left us but with this boards backing he will succeed.
THELWELL Out?.

If it's on performance then Muscat has to be up there. Has won trophies in 3 countries.
08 Oct 2025 10:27:18
Who then Mr Potato Head?
08 Oct 2025 10:30:39
I've always said I'm not ITK, Stig.
I have a family member who is related to one of the original "3bears", but I don't receive any info.
From a personal opinion, I would have loved Knutsen. Just from what he has achieved at Bodo.
Again, if I presented you with a blind CV of someone with 4 titles in 7 years, improved them year on year in Europe with a turnover a 1/ 4 of Rangers - who would you prefer?
08 Oct 2025 10:36:14
Stevie g not my first choice, McInnes for me but I would accept him as he would galvanise us especially over other names being mentioned but I wouldn't rule out a wildcard or two from those currently in charge, Benitez and bilic the most notable.
08 Oct 2025 10:36:37
Steven Gerrard is exactly what this club, and in particular this squad, is crying out for right now.
At this moment in time, no-one else comes close imo.
08 Oct 2025 10:44:06
Sollof down to his tax implecations. This will now be cleared.
08 Oct 2025 11:00:51
ASA u can't take the title out for the sake of your point.
That's just blatant cheating the situation.
U have defensive records and point total records u u have European runs and scalps.
U have the squad he left getting to euro final u have the value of the players he brought into club or trained once here compared to what he inherited.
U have the bond he built with the fans. He gets the club and they get him.
ASA I know u don't like him but he is the outstanding candidate mate whichever way u look at it.
That's simply the facts mate. He ticks every single box.
And he's going to be way way more mature and experienced at his job than before.
It's a fantastic move for us and for him. It really just fits perfect.

Problem being MPH
Non of us know who really wants to put their name forward
We had Martin in front of who?
maybe our wish lists are nothing more than wish lists
Maybe we're getting offers from mangers in the lower leagues of England and Europe that every fan would tune their nose up at
We just don't know, and we won't know about Gerrard until his scarf above his head again?
08 Oct 2025 12:19:42
Why not summarise what Danny rohl has achieved in his managerial career then Asa? Does that make good reading?
08 Oct 2025 12:32:43
Stevie_G_new: Each football club manager appointed in a hurry at this time of the season is a risk. You will never please everyone. This, in my opinion, is less of a risk than any of the signings we have made for years. As you say, he's just what Rangers need right now. The last time he was here we were the fittest, fastest running team in the Division by a mile. Do we want to see that again at Ibrox?
