Very sad news, Dixie was a real character back in the days when that was tolerated a lot more than it is now.
He was part of one of the greatest nights of my football life that night where we beat Bayern and his moon shot penalty lost his team their semi against Inter.

I watched that through a chip shop window in Govan with lots of other bears. He took pelters because of that miss but I'm not on tonight to ridicule him, I feel a genuine sadness that the wee man has passed away;
RIP Dixie.

He was a gent, one of my best mates is a huge Selik man and about 2006 ish we made a pact that we would each go to Ibrox and Parkhead as the others guest for hospitality think it was Hibs at Ibrox I took him too in the members I think? and he took me to the McStay suite when they played Inverness, the game was secondary obviously but the suite was good and after the game Dixie Deans and another ex player from the same era came and sat at our table for about half an hour.
My mate told them straight away of my allegiance and they were so professional and hoped that I had a good time and how good it was that me and my mate were able to do what we did.
Ended up talking more to Dixie as we both knew someone.

RIP.

Rosevale - I'm pretty sure Dixie was originally a Rangers supporter himself, one of my uncles knew him and said he was great company. I remember the day he scored six against Thistle back in the 1970s, don't think that's been equalled since in Scotland. RIP.

Sorry just remembered who the other player was Tommy Callaghan.

One of the auld school, RIP Dixie.

Agreed, he was a real player in his day, sorry to hear of his passing.

RIP Dixie; both teams would pay a lot for the same quality of striker now.

Rosevale I never met or knew Dixie but had the pleasure to work with Tommy Callaghan in the 90s for a works team; sadly no longer with us either. He was almost 60 then and strolled through it. a true gent and an excellent player. our different allegiance was never mentioned; football was the winner. RIP both.

Seemed to be a nice fella and a great instinctive goalscorer. also gave me one of my best nights when he missed the penalty v Inter in '72, after we had just dumped Bayern. RIP Sir.

You know Angus I didn't know he had passed as well.
That's very sad along with today's news.
Tommy Callaghan was a true gent also that day.
One of my good friends was our former player the late Colin Jackson, and I think me and Dixie spoke about him, I remember telling Colin about me meeting Dixie and he told me in the early 70s him and a few other Rangers players would often meet up with a few of the Celtic boys for a drink in The St Enoch Hotel.

I recall my brother telling me that Dixie didn't like be addressed as Dixie when he had a pub in Baillieston. I thought that was strange as very few people called him anything else.

Don't get me wrong, he was lovely guy behind the bar, but I took the cowards way out by not calling him anything at all.

Great football player and a gentleman too.
