Mario Kempes of Valencia in 1979. Cup Winners Cup match, he scored twice as they beat us 3-1 at Ibrox. He was one of Argentina’s star men that won the World Cup in 78.

Player I was most impressed with was Riquelme from Villarreal . I thought he absolutely bossed the game.

Messi is IMO the greatest of all time but if you are talking about individual performances against us I would agree Del Piero is up there mate.

I remember being blown away by the Valencia side that we drew a few years later. Mendieta, Kily Gonzalez and Angulo were outstanding. Stefan Effenberg was another with Bayern who was class. We've seen some crackers over the years.

One for me was Rummenige playing for Inter Milan, absolutely destroyed us on his own and nearly broke the Copland end crossbar with a shot from 30 yards.

I was also at the rangers game against valencia at ibrox, in our 3-1 defeat way back in '79.God where do the years go? The argentinian mario kempes with that long, hateley like hair was superb that night. I also witnessed the superb alessandro del piero when juventus beat us in the champions league 4-1 in turin and 4-0 at ibrox. Poor alex clelland didn't know where he was that night, playing against the young, wonderfully talented del piero. What a performance he produced against us also.

Going on to what j1985 said regarding messi being the best player ever, i disagree with that.
Without a doubt IMHO diego maradonna is the greatest EVER player i've seen. What puts him ahead of messi for me, is his performances and what he's won with his country argentina, as well as being unplayable with the clubs he played for. I honestly don't think messi has hit anywhere near the heights for argentina, that maradonna has! Diego maradonna has also lifted the world cup. No brainer for me guys, he was the greatest! All about opinions of course, but i've tried to back up my logic as to why in my eyes he was the greatest footballer on the planet.

Really frustrated that the Ed’s didn’t post my response but here goes again.

I clearly called out we’d signed two very very good players, in my opinion the two I was talking about was Aribo and Helander, although I acknowledge that the later is pure based on the transfer fee.

The other 8 players we’ve signed are quantity signings, purely to increase our squad, all 8 could easily not play and simply sit on the bench.

We were promised quality signings over quantity, 8 v 2 is very unbalanced.

Now you put a below average player from a poor Kilmarnock team into the mix then I’m lost for words at the overall average approach we’ve taken to transfers.

Hopefully this post to tell Katic to dry his eyes makes it through hahaha! Honestly mate, lighten up, we have definitely strengthened. It was the squad that needed strengthened more than the starting 11. It was when we needed to go to the bench or got suspensions or injuries that we fell apart last year.

Gonna address sir rock katic's point. It's nonsense what you've posted there mate, 8 poor signing v 2 good ones? Based on what? You realise Steve Davis is one of those don't you? Jones has shown good performances in just last 2 starts, Edmondson hasn't put a foot wrong, ojo has a few goals and assists already and king is a premier league player who only played 30 mins. What an unbelievably negative post. The only questionable signing for me is greg stewart.

Clearly you did not read my response properly so I’m not going to rewrite it, just ask you to re-read it.
Question though- would you rather we brought in a number of players and improve the overall squad, have a strong first 11 and strong options in reserve or, sign a couple of ‘big name players’ (say like a couple of Mexican internationals or a Portuguese international with over 100 caps) that don’t fit the team we are building and cause us to flop?

Have you also considered how difficult it is to bring players of a better ‘quality’ than say Davis, Jack, Kamara, Morelos, Tav etc etc to play in the Scottish league? Celtic have had to spend £7m on a player no one had heard of and £3m in a left back who looks terrible.

We clearly have brought in players that have improved the overall quality of the squad. Come back to me at the end of the season and if you’re not happy with the way things have gone fair enough. Oh and if you don’t want to renew your season ticket there’s 15k waiting to take it.

Barisic has most definitely had enough chances herewego55.Always have said he's talented but i'd cut my losses and try and sell him now. It doesn't look as if he has the heart to play for our club, in the scottish game. Hope we can sign either max lowe or greg taylor, to replace barisic.

I fancy us to sneak it 1-0 in the first leg in warsaw on thursday. I reckon morelos will score the only goal. I think we'll then go on to beat legia warsaw 2-0,in the 2nd leg at ibrox on thursday week. A comfortable 3-0 on aggregate.

Reports are we are in for Brophy.

Ok I get people’s points we should be aiming higher but what you have to remember is he will be our THIRD choice striker. A third choice striker who has experience in the SPL and who can score goals against SPL teams I would say is not to bad!

We just let Lafferty go, who is better than Brophy. We could have had Naismith on a free, who is better than Brophy. Would rather one of our young strikers got a chance.

Awful mate, completely awful.

Our recruitment plan was to be simple, quality over quantity.

We’ve signed 2 players who could be really really good players, the rest are here to make up the numbers.

Our squad has better depth but the quality signings promised have not materialised.

Don’t worry though, we’ll get the same message next year around season ticket renewal.

Theswagman, kyle lafferty is better than nobody pal. His attitude stinks and is rid rotten. Brophy has a far better attitude, than lafferty will ever have. As far as i'm concerned, I as a supporter would much rather have a decent professional who has a good attitude within our squad than someone like kyle lafferty who is a total waste my friend.

As usual Coop, making stuff up. How do you know anything about Brophy’s attitude? He’s a Celtic fan, how do you know he’ll burst a gut for us? You’ve absolutely no evidence to say he’s a great professional. He actually looks like he’s carrying a bit of weight to me so I would question that. And if you look at Lafferty’s performances for NI and at Hearts it’s just stupid to say Brophy is better. We just obviously couldn’t get a tune out of him the way those teams could.

1) no ones actually saying we are signing Brophy, it’s purely a rumour. If he were to sign and you don’t think he’s good enough then you can call out Gerrard for signing him.
2) What exactly are you moaning about? We’ve started the season very well, it’s early days but we are looking very strong, much better than last season. The way you’re missing you’d think we hadn’t won a game.
3) we’ve improved the overall strength of the squad to no end. Let’s look at the players brought in over the ones that have left shall we? Edmundson and Helander over McAuley and Worrell? No competition there. Aribo over Coulibaly? Same. Ojo over Candieas, early days but so far contributing far more in terms of goals/ assists. Jones over Kent? Again early days but has started way better than Kent did. The rest? It’s true the likes of Barker, Stewart and Hastie will be squad players but they are adding to our overall strength in depth.
Add to all of this the fact that Davis and Defoe are looking much sharper with a full pre-season and we are looking really strong.
We don’t need to go out and sign two or three players at 5 plus million each, big money doesn’t always mean good players (just look at those across the city and some of our big money flops of the past) . Our current recruitment appears to be a lot smarter and cost affective with players brought in that compliment our team and style of play and offer much better value for money and I for one fully trust Allen, Gerrard and the rest of the scouting department.

Theswagman, i know the family personally, if you read my other post on brophy you would know this. You've probably got a better attitude than that waste of space lafferty. He never stays at any club long as apart from hearts, every other club has stated attitude is his major downfall.

Of course i know the family support celtic. I grew up beside Eamonn's dad wullie and his mum lisa. Over the years we've had a good few boyhood celtic fans playing for our great club. I have never once said that i felt Eamonn was good enough for us because i honestly don't know. I think obviously there's better strikers to be going for, but the big problem we have is the striker, IF we do sign one, is going to be 3rd choice. We won't spend big money for a 3rd choice striker and rightly so.
