Anybody remember pre UB etc. There was the brass band ? only just remembered as the french national athem was on tv. Used to sing it for Charbonnier via the brass band.
11 Oct 2024 15:35:46
Am sure they were called the blue order Paul but yep remember them well.
11 Oct 2024 18:36:49
G4 you are right but think there was another band before them. not sure though just seem to have a vague memory of reading it somewhere. can't get joy division out of my head now though so no chance of remembering it. What a band though.
11 Oct 2024 19:20:59
They were superb Angus.
11 Oct 2024 20:46:56
Joy Division are my favourite band of all time, Angus. If anyone on here hasn't heard of them, go listen to a song called Atmosphere and just enjoy! What a band they were!
11 Oct 2024 21:55:48
Had a listen just there, weird and like a dirge, but want to listen again, it's kinda ethereal in a hypnotic way? love will tear us apart was the only one I was familiar with tbh, did Paul Young step in for Ian Curtis SS?
11 Oct 2024 22:00:12
Sunshine, them and pre ure ultravox mate, happy days .
11 Oct 2024 22:06:35
so good just love it and Ian Curtis voice on it and love the drum back beat. soon as you mentioned it I listened to it again and was reminded how much I liked that song. Control ends on this and no surprise as it is fantastic.

Sky do a cracking documentary about Ian Curtis and joy division, great television around such a sad topic.
12 Oct 2024 08:17:43
@Fork. no they stopped being Joy Division when Curtis died and became New Order. Paul Young did a cover of love will tear us apart which might be why you think that.
12 Oct 2024 09:35:42
I agree sunshine joy division were a cracking band, fronted by the superb ian curtis?god rest his soul ? Curtis was a very deep thinking, gothic style lyricist but what a songwriter he was ?He was a very clever guy ?He had that very deep voice that you just had to keep listening to. Absolutely tragic that the young fella took his own life and just hits home to everyone of us, what mental illness can do and hidden in a lot of cases ??Never can be promoted enough the dangers of mental health issues/ illness and how most definitely it is good to talk ?.
12 Oct 2024 10:00:08
No, Fork, it was Bernard Sumner who took over vocals and they became New Order. Paul Young done a cover of Love will tear us apart, but that was it.
Yip, some song, Angus. It's strange, but their best known songs were not on the original albums 'Unknown Pleasures' and 'Closer', but have been added later on. For me, the intro to 'Dead Souls' is one of the greatest things ever composed!
I've watched a few documentaries Dado. I can't remember if they were on Sky, Netflix or Amazon. There is a cracking documentary made around the same time as my young brother's passing as one of his songs was 'Love will tear us apart'. Yeah, it was sad in the fact that such a young, and extremely talented guy, had to endure terrible illnesses, both a physical one, and a mental one. As much as I absolutely love the talent of Ian Curtis, there was a dark side to the boy. If you have ever read the biography 'Control', his wife is very open, and it's warts and all-to say she never had it easy with him is an understatement.
Ian Curtis, imo, was one of the most talented individuals to ever live, but like most virtuosos, there was a dark, troubled side to him which ultimately led to his death at only 23.

Great post sunshine and agree with everything you state there my friend, superb ?.
12 Oct 2024 11:16:38
Cheers SS knew somebody stepped in for a bit, also didn't know about them becoming New Order, was it Blue Monday and The Beach double side that was massive back in the day??.
12 Oct 2024 11:59:02
The Jam is my all time best band and Paul Weller is just different class.
12 Oct 2024 12:21:09
I love The Jam, My star, and they are in my top 3 favourite bands of all time. Infact, 'Down in the tube station' is one of my favourite songs alongside 'In the City'. Just like Joy Division, The Jam were a little bit before my time, so I never had the pleasure of seeing them live. I have, however, seen From the Jam when Foxton and Buckler were both in it, but without Weller, they'll never be 'The Jam'! Foxton, incidentally, was in my other favourite band in my top 3, Stiff little fingers (SLF), and as anyone across the water will testify, they are one of N Irealand's greatest exports. A phenomenal, and very underrated band (within mainstream music) who have influenced many a more famous band over the years.
12 Oct 2024 12:27:38
SWS agree and the BBC have a short video (on our pages I think) where he covers the mental health issues managers and players face. very short but insightful. keeping a public face whilst struggling along inside>
44 years past May Curtis dies. Getting old as it doesn't seem that long ago.
12 Oct 2024 12:38:08
Sunshine I thought I read someplace recently that they didn't want fans to be ripped off so they didn't release album songs as singles. Never checked that but might explain why they got added to albums later as they know fans will buy them to have the complete works.
12 Oct 2024 12:41:37
Same sunshine, I never seen the Jam live, but seen Weller many times mate, snap, down in the tube station is my favourite all time track.
12 Oct 2024 12:44:57
Love stiff little fingers sunshine, seems we have the same taste in music mate.
12 Oct 2024 13:38:47
agree my star, saw SLF in a small venue in Aberdeen and what a show.
12 Oct 2024 13:47:32
We certainly do, My star!
Being from across the water, mate, I take it you know all about the fantastic Punk scene N Irealand had? The likes of Terri Hooley, Good Vibrations, and another phenomenal Punk band, Rudy, being part of a music scene where religion had no place.
12 Oct 2024 14:03:32
Sunshine and My star, like you guys i really like joy division and the jam myself and ian curtis and paul weller are absolute superb songwriters and great performers and iconic to put it another way ?My question to both of you is this who in your opinion is the more talented singer and songwriter ian curtis V paul weller ?.
12 Oct 2024 15:04:17
Sunshine, was born NI but grow up in Scotland mate, visited around 6 weeks a year though and do know about it and really like good vibrations.
Sws it's got to be Weller in my opinion and he's still doing it today.
12 Oct 2024 15:19:14
That's impossible to answer, Coops! Curtis was dead at 23 just as him, and Joy Division were about to explode onto the mainstream in 1980, whereas, Weller has been there since the late 70s right up to today. This is a question, imo, that can't be answered, mate, and nor should it! Both should just be enjoyed for who they were, and who they are, and that's it!
12 Oct 2024 15:41:59
That's a fair enough, honest answer sunshine but imo going by what i'd actually heard of ian curtis and joy division before the tragic circumstances regarding ian curtis and obviously knowing paul weller even up until now, i would say that ian curtis ever so slightly edges it for me and god only knows what him and joy division would have went on to achieve ??.
12 Oct 2024 15:44:28
Ok sunshine, as atmosphere is your favourite ian curtis/ joy division song, in your opinion has paul weller/ the jam/ the style council ever done a better song ?.
12 Oct 2024 16:08:45
Eaton Rifles.
12 Oct 2024 16:11:30
Jeez, going underground, a town called malice. I'm getting auld and possible dementia?.
12 Oct 2024 18:28:29
'English Rose' is one of my favourite songs, and alongside Down in the tube station, In the City, and many more Jam songs, could stand up against Joy Division songs, but 'Atmosphere', 'Dead souls', 'Digital', 'Transmission' and 'She's lost control' have that little bit more magic about them. All songs mentioned are very, very special songs, and were a major part of my life growing up.
12 Oct 2024 18:31:47
You are 100% correct sunshine, I was only going by years covered.
12 Oct 2024 19:04:04
eaton rifles started my mind on misheard song titles and lyrics (eating rifles) . so in a Paul Young vein: "every time you go away you take a bit of meat with you"
12 Oct 2024 21:15:29
Absolutely agree sunshine ? they're all special, outstanding songs and both ian curtis and paul weller are pure class ?.
13 Oct 2024 08:17:46
Paul86, I remember that Brass Band in the 90's, My Wife, Son and I had our Season Tickets in Govan West, and they played constantly in the top tier of the Broomloan Stand, good days, and VERY FEW FINES for the Club.
