Newcastle are caught in a relegation battle and by signing Woods they reduce the scoring potential of one of their biggest obstacles to staying in the Premiership. If Newcastle stay up and Burnley go down Woods will have been well worth the 20 million even if he never kicks a ball for Newcastle.
