Wanted to hear everyone's thoughts on Butland topics often mentioned on here, Sone seem to want rid and some want to keep! My option is we don't have much chance of getting better. His saves seem to go in recognised like yesterday he kept us a live at points he had a superb game and his blunders highlighted like last week (a keepers life)! one of our best and most consistent performers this season imo.
Ed Not usually my thing but can you run a simple poll Keep or sell Jack Butland!

He makes a few mistakes throughout the season but how many games has he saved us. Goalkeeper position is the least of our worries where we need to get someone.

Butland is a very good keeper. He's saved us countless times. A lot of the people on here focus on the negative aspect of players. Souttar and Tav have been a big target as has Butland. Do I wish he didn't make mistakes? Of course, was I raging with him after the Hearts game? Yip! But you could argue he saved us 3 points single handed yesterday and in a lot of games where we have won by 1 clear goal.
We need to support guys like Butland more.

R1: Jack Butland is a solid shot-stopper, no doubt, but there are aspects of his game that contribute to some of the team's defensive struggles, even if they don't always directly lead to goals. His distribution, ability to deal with crosses, and starting position when we're in possession are areas where there's definitely room for improvement.
I understand we might not be able to bring in a "perfect" keeper, and I'm not suggesting we need one. But, considering the way we want to play, I do think there's potential to bring in a goalkeeper whose skillset aligns better with our overall approach. A keeper with a more well-rounded balance of attributes could help us build from the back and tighten things up defensively, ultimately reducing the number of easy chances we concede.

We've bigger problems at the club than Butland.
There are aspects of his game I don't like, but his is a position that can wait.
We're very poor upfront.

We have bigger issues than Butland so would keep him in the short term. Yesterday demonstrated his good qualities as a great shot stopper which don't think many debate. It's the other areas like EHL said that concern me but can wait unless there's an obvious replacement.

Whats the position on his contract.
28 Dec 2025 10:14:09
Butland is a great shot stopper and has saved us on too many occasions to think about, that said his ability to deal with crosses and mostly his distribution are major areas of concern.
It's a tough one regarding Butland, is there better out there that we can attract and does Danny Rohl trust him enough to continue as our number 1?
28 Dec 2025 10:14:44
I agree EHL,
Butland had a good game yesterday but like the Hearts game a mistake is in him and too regularly for me.
28 Dec 2025 11:47:09
Agree, there's areas he's not perfect especially crosses, EHL, but in the main I want a keeper making stops when needed he's rarely failed us in massive moments, Ine on ones he's been exceptional! he's a great character with a great attitude, Just don't see anyone that I think within our budget is better?

Butland is a liability and a huge part of our defensive problems. Decent shot stopper but the rest of his game is not good enough. Needs replaced.
28 Dec 2025 13:06:39
R1, it's a really tough call.
Personally I think the team would be more solid with a keeper with better distribution and who is comfortable playing from the 18 yard box - purely as I think we'd concede far fewer opportunities.
The alternative is we line up with a defence and midfield comfortable sitting deep - like Hearts. In which, Butland would thrive.
28 Dec 2025 13:37:05
we want to get rid of the GK who is part of the stingiest defence in the league. yes his distribution isn't the greatest and he doesn't play like a sweeper keeper but he does stop shots which is what we need him for.
what was the score yesterday if he hadn't been good at that.
also 6 goals lost from 10 games with 6 clean sheets isn't bad for a poor keeper so in only 4 of those did he have a mistake in him which coast a goal.
we will need to replace eventually but he is the best we have and better than the replacements being named; Shamal George being one.

Club 72 reading a lot of your post and I am absolutely bewildered with a lot of your comments. Nonone seems good enough.
Times have changed, we can't spend or attract the players we used to.
Our players are not as bad as you make out to be.
Butland and Baron example
All out field players constantly make mistakes. But others around can compensate. A keeper has no protection.
Name a keeper that doesn't make mistakes or doesn't make at least one bad decision.
Butland was outstanding yesterday.
A few rope moments last week. But overall good.
There is no keeper who is the full package.
28 Dec 2025 14:16:39
I personally couldn't care less if a keeper can pass a ball he is there to stop the ball going in the net and if it wasn't for him yesterday we lose that game. that's his main job.
28 Dec 2025 14:54:48
Same could be said of the Motherwell keeper or it could have been 5/6, Butland needs replaced but not this window he doesn't.
28 Dec 2025 15:19:43
Pieter. The vast majority of our players are not good enough. We have been embarrassed in Europe and the league with these players. Its the worst team since pre Gerrard. We are struggling to establish 3rd in the league, what's bewildering?
Yeah storm but last week Butland's passing cost us the game?♂️.
28 Dec 2025 15:43:10
It's his mistakes that concern me.
And with goalies that generally means conceding goals.
On his game he is a good shot stopper.
28 Dec 2025 15:43:14
Angus, yes, I would like to replace Butland as our number 1 - as although we're doing better defensively, it's clear to me that we've had to sacrifice a lot of our attacking threat in order to do so.
Looking at Butlands attributes as a keeper, my concern - which has been validated in many a game - is that as we look to implement a more attacking structure his weaknesses become exposed.
Keepers play a much greater role in how teams set up nowadays and looking at Rohl, I suspect he wants us pushed up the pitch defending from the front.
