Would like to share a cracking debate, i had with workmates today. After reading what our manager steven gerrard says about now having rangers in his heart, as well as his beloved liverpool, got us talking about the size of glasgow rangers and liverpool!

Who is the bigger football club in name and stature, if both clubs played in the same league, with finances from playing in the same league being equal. I have no doubt rangers are a bigger football club than liverpool, all finances from the same league being equal!

Ed, could you run a very interesting poll for me mate? The poll being, if both rangers and celtic we're in the english premier league, who would be the 6 biggest football clubs within the english premier league? Being totally honest my 6 in order would be:

1. Man Utd,
2. Rangers,
3. Celtic,
4. Liverpool,
5. Arsenal,
6. Man City!

Of these 6 football clubs, which order would you have them in, with all being equal? Cheers Ed!

{Ed033's Note - The polls need a question and all the voting options.

If all clubs had the same money etc then man city would be no where near. Have only got big last decade. Newcastle would be in there with fan base etc. am rangers daft but both man united and liverpool are bigher clubs. Unwont see many chinese folk running about with our orange 3rd kit on. Man u and liverpool are huge over there.

It's a difficult one. Liverpool were actually a very ordinary side until the Shankly revolution with Everton the bigger club. Similarly, back in the 50's Man City were the top team in that city. The big teams of that era were the likes of Villa, Bolton, Arsenal, Spurs, Burnley, Wolves, Newcastle, Sunderland etc modern wise Man Utd and Liverpool have to be top two but the OF would top the tree given full histories, with Rangers at the top, naturally!

{Ed001's Note - that is not true about Liverpool, you clearly do not know the history of the club. It was created and won trophies almost from its inception. The only thing that was missing prior to Shankly was the FA Cup.}

If rangers and celtic were in the english prem they would be up there at the top challenging, there is no doubt about it. Rangers and celtic are bigger that all clubs in england and are on a par with liverpool and man utd. Once rangers and celtic got a slice of that money pie we would blow their league to bits. that's a fact👊👍. They don't want us in their league because they know this👍.

Ed. Got to disagree with you about Liverpool. They didn't win the FA Cup until more than 70 years after they were formed and won the league just four times between 1892 and World War II. Without a doubt their most successful era was in the 1970s and 1980s with 18 domestic and 6 European trophies.

{Ed001's Note - and how many times did Everton win it? Or anyone else other than the likes of Burnley etc? I already said it was the FA Cup missing but they were a big club which is why Shanks left Huddersfield to take over. Huddersfield prior to WW2 were a big club. There is no point arguing, Liverpool were a big club and they had one of the biggest superstars in the game in Billy Liddell before Shanks ever came around. No one is disputing they became more successful, what I said was that they were successful before that too. Perhaps you should look up 'The Untouchables' of the 1920s managed by David Ashworth before you argue. No one managed a sustained period of dominance until Liverpool of the 70s and 80s, and then Man Utd following it, in English football. So 4 titles was actually a lot. Everton are the 4th most successful club in England with just 9 titles in total.}

Not in my book Paul 86! Man utd, no doubt are the biggest football club in britain but IMO rangers all things financially being equal, are without doubt a bigger football club than liverpool!

17 Nov 2018 10:01:57
Your book is hardly full of hard facts though is it? Liverpool are huge coop, most successful british team in europe👍.

madness, we are no where near the big clubs in england, maybe in our minds. there so far ahead of us fiancialy its frightning, look at the turnover of the big clubs. what utd pay sanchez alone in wages for the year beats our wage bill. get a grip. i'd argue utd, liverpool are worlwide brands if you have travelled the world you would have seen this as i have. coldo if you realy think we would blow the premiership apart you don't know your football. we strugle in europa league that's as far as we would get. i haven't mentioned arsenal, chelsea, spurs all in london with great stadia, massive turnover in revenue, bigger staduims than ours. forgot man city. were a million miles away from them, if we were invited to england mid table in championship at best. we would attract investment but take time to adapt. no doubt we glasgow rangers are a big club but falling behind englands top teams in stadia, revenue, football teams.

Not necessarily disagreeing Ed. Yes, pre-war teams like Huddersfield, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Portsmouth could be considered 'big'. Chelsea didn't win the old First Division until 1955 but look what they've done in the last 12 years or so. However, Liverpool and Man Utd stand head and shoulders above all the other English teams in terms of their domestic and European records. At least Gers are still the most successful club team in the world!

{Ed001's Note - being perfectly honest, and much as I hate to admit it, Man Utd are the biggest club in the world right now. Liverpool are close with Salah on board though. My friend is dating an Egyptian guy and a group of us went out for a meal for her birthday, I spent the entire time, once the Egyptians found out I supported Liverpool, getting a succession of mobile phones shoved under my nose to look at their various Salah pics and wallpapers etc. During the Champions League final I was swamped under pics of Egypt supporting Liverpool in the game. And it is not just Egypt, Salah is a huge hero across the whole of the Arab world. It is major hero worship of him and it is unreal. You can't even go to a poundland equivalent store without being bombarded with pics of him and racks of Salah t-shirts.}

17 Nov 2018 12:08:44
Got to agree. Rangers and celtic are huge clubs, I honestly think tho that if we went down there now as it stands none of us would get out of the championship.

{Ed001's Note - I think it would be the same as any club in the English league, if the money is invested well they can succeed. It all comes down to spending the money well.}

17 Nov 2018 12:17:20
To be fair Coldo did say that the OF would do better than most down south given the kind of money they are pulling in from tv, sponsorship etc. At the moment of course is is impossible to compete with any of the premier league teams or even a majority of the championship ones. The money they get is frightening and unless we can attract some kind of sugar daddy with unlimited millions we have no chance. However, given the overall history, titles, crowds etc, we are right there at the top.

17 Nov 2018 16:22:25
Fan base, history, stadium, attendances, tv audiences when the OF game is on and the OF are up there. Throw in that tv money and sponsorship and the OF would blow the english prem to bits👍.

were so far behind the top 6 in england. we will never make up the difference, as i said the top 6 in england, man utd, man city, liverpool, arsenal, spurs, chelsea have better staduims, revenue we can only dream about, better football teams, please be realistic. we are stuck in poor football league, boring set up, no competition, where do you think motherwell would finish in english premiership, it would be a cricket score every match. i welcome the new sky deal of 100 million supposedly for 3 seasons. it can only improve our game. no doubting our history, fans but that's in the past, right now we are light years away from top 6, if there's a breakaway european league do you seriously think we will get an invite to join.

17 Nov 2018 22:00:20
Supercooper, but there not at all being equal. This really is a non discussion. Given the massive TV revenue Utd, City, Liverpool et al get compared to up here we are non starters. If your basing it on fan Base then UK wide gers easily top 5 but at mo we know stadium capacity and presently it's not going to change. Good indicator is not many clubs in UK fill their stadium to capacity week in with season ticket holders. Rangers do.

If Ibrox expanded to say 60k capacity which is not outwith bounds of reason, given demand for ST we could fill easily. We could seriously call ourselves top three. But revenue unless TV rights change we won't be top ten.

17 Nov 2018 22:03:25
Londonjock, if you read my post I said all things being equal and with rangers being in the english premier league with all the financial dough they get, then rangers would undoubtedly be only 2nd to Manchester utd in the biggest club in Britain debate! Not a shred of doubt about it imo!

18 Nov 2018 01:08:36
With all due respect, the point you make is valid, for the here and now.

Like for like tv revenue we'd be right in the mix. Ok, it could take a few seasons to get our house in order, but all things being equal we'd be up there.

I'll tell you what tho, £30m per season will make a massive difference to Scottish football. What is it just now, £10m per season?

18 Nov 2018 07:55:47
im a die hard rangers fan in london, love the banter of football with my friends here in london especialy football. For years i fought the battle regarding SCOTTISH FOOTBALL the standard of our game with my friends who sneer at our game calling it micky mouse football.2 bob they call it in cockney slang. Now the sky money will improve our game, about time we got a decent deal instead of crumbs from the table, i blame sky for a lot of things, i dontsubscribe to sky at all, hate them with a passion for there contempt of scottish game, The english premier ship are decades in front of us money wise, its been spoiled, the next deal is going to get bigger. Look at man utd s revenue not far of a billion notes, liverpools are not far behind i don't think you realise how big these clubs are, even if we went 60,000 were no where near them money wise. Things will never be equal, the staduims are far better than ours The best we can hope for is a strong rangers again, winning leagues, doing well in europe, that's is good as i gets i'm afraid.
