Rangers class?! Ha! The worst team in CL's history! 2 trophies in the last the last 12 years! 13 points off our biggest rivals this season, and trophyless, again! Aye, we're pure class!
With the regards to some of the players mentioned, it's not that they're not "Rangers class", it's just that they are not good enough, period!

The level of player changes over time, but the yardstick for what "Ranger Class" is over time is fairly universal:
Players that will take/ keep us above Celtic.
So the simple question is: "Would player x get into the Celtic team and, by extension, enable us to get and stay above them".
Laudrup and Gascoigne? No, because that's not what is required to answer that question. Kyogo isn't a better player than Larsson, Maeda isn't better than DiCanio, but what they are better than is their counterpart in our squad and that's why they are on top.
Look at our current squad. None of them, none (I could be persuaded on Goldson over Starfelt but I think Starfelt is better than he's billed) get into Celtics first 11, most don't make their bench.
Is "Rangers Class" a big name, expensive signing? No, it's a player that is better than, has the ability to be better than the current Celtic counterpart, that's all.
For example, if the Butland rumours are true, that would be an affirmative. He has the ability to be better than Joe Hart.
But he ain't Andy Goram.

There were players that were Rangers class long before Gazza and Laudrup, players like Shearer, Callow, Greig, Wilson, Cooper, I could go on. These guys played for the jersey and as the folks in the East End of Glasgow have proved, they still exist. Our problem since the arrival of the now departed Wilson, our acquisitions were a joke, decent quality young players signed for one reason and one reason only, a quick profit, and others like Sakala, Davies etc., a total waste of a wage.
I don't know the answer, but we need to hope that Beale is given what he needs to bring in some winners because otherwise we will continue to be the best of a bad lot fighting for the runners up position.

At the end of this season I expect that we'll see a lot of those who currently classify as either home grown or association players leave.
This means we'll have a pretty big void and to fill it we either need to extend some of the expiring contract (like last year) or take a gamble on some players from the SPL.
Personally I'd rather see us take a gamble and I'm fine with this approach so long as we also sign some first team ready players on key positions.

Rangers class is someone that conducts themselves well on and off the pitch, is charitable, hardworking with a never give in attitude. They can play his/ her best football when everything is against them in front of hostile crowds and 50,000 expectant fans. They don't need to be Messi just competent in their position. If you have 11 footballers that can do that you have a Rangers team. imo.

Sir Walter Smith, I'm not 100% sure but I think that 4 out of our 8 qualifying players are due to leave (McGregor, Jack, Davis and Arfield)
There's also rumours that Mccrorie and McLaughlin are also likely to leave.
That leaves us Souttar and Wright from last year's squad.
So although not ideal, I can understand why we're are rumoured to be linked to resigning Liam Kelly and Barry McKay and also linked with the likes of Dylan Smith, Barron, Nisbet and Shankland.
Personally, I'd rather see us take a chance on signing these players - providing the fees are realistic - than extending any of the current batch.
