Ok fellow bears i'll ask you this. In your opinions who was the better all round right back ie. alan hutton or james tavernier ?
Should be interesting ? If you don't mind give the reasons for your choice ?.

Agree2 Disagree0

Easily Tav in my opinion.

19 Feb 2024 19:12:55
Very good question Sir Walter.
I thought Gary Stevens was an outstanding right back for us and could also get up and down the pitch,
Do you mind if I add him to the debate.

19 Feb 2024 19:15:30
Tav by a mile.

19 Feb 2024 19:16:55
Geez SWS that's a tough one to work out. Tav for me gets the nod his numbers are phenomenal but AH was an absolute machine at RB, he was a better defender and more athletic however Tavs ability going forward and scoring makes it an easy choice. It definitely helps tav having lunny to drop into defend when he is bombing forward.

19 Feb 2024 19:24:26
Tavs for me with the goals he contributes and his crossing ability. Hutton probably a better defender but Tav is crucial to how we play, a true legend.

19 Feb 2024 19:26:58
I think Hutton was far better defensively, but tavs stats are literally something else. A combination of the 2 would be worth a serious amount of money.

19 Feb 2024 19:29:05
Tav = Goals and penalty to Rangers.

19 Feb 2024 19:53:35
Hutton for his defending
Tav for his goals.

19 Feb 2024 20:07:37
Tav all day long. Hutton was maybe a very slightly better defender, but even he admits that tav’s stats are outrageous for a right back.

19 Feb 2024 20:22:07
Alan Hutton played week in week out at a higher level in the epl or whatever it was called back then. Hutton was better defender in my opinion and Tav better going forward tho Hutton was no slouch attacking wise. I would say Hutton just shades it but very very close. Tavs numbers do speak for themselves.

19 Feb 2024 20:25:40
Tav all day long. Hutton had a good 6 months and was off and that 6 months was probably the best of his career. Tav has given us 9 years. He is available all the time. It is even a contest.

19 Feb 2024 21:33:47
Have we had a better RB than Tav?

19 Feb 2024 21:43:23
Tav for me, he has played through some difficult times with the Club and has come through to lead the Club as Captain. Defensively he might not be as good as Hutton but his goals and assists and his ability at dead ball situations are second to none as a full back.
Hutton is possibly remembered more for the televised games that some of us saw him playing after his transfer to England than for his time at Rangers.

19 Feb 2024 21:43:43
Not even up for debate. Tav 100 times over. We will only realise how good he was until he is gone. The only reason he gets a hard time is because he is the captain. If he wins the league and Cup he will go down as our greatest ever right back.

19 Feb 2024 21:51:30
Can't understand why it's even a question. Tavernier by a long way. Hutton had a year or so of a purple patch, Tav has been doing it for nigh on a decade.

19 Feb 2024 21:59:53
Tavernier for me, just what he brings to the team, he was toiling earlier this season and big parts of last, but he's back and also a far better defender under Clement.

19 Feb 2024 21:28:46
Just imagine if allan Hutton had Tav’s dead ball ability…. Wow.

19 Feb 2024 22:18:24
Scotty123 sandy Jardine is the answer to your question.

19 Feb 2024 22:23:46
Sir walter heres a better one imagine tav spoke the same amount of ? as hutton.

20 Feb 2024 00:05:30
Am way livibear, shouldn't even be a contest James tavernier all day every day twice on a Sunday.

20 Feb 2024 05:05:19
Gary stevens is the best right back we have had IMO.

20 Feb 2024 06:47:34
I agree with you storm, as i also think gary stevens is the best right back i've seen in a rangers jersey and i include even the late, great sandy jardine who i've seen playing, albeit towards the end of his career ?.

20 Feb 2024 09:26:31
Stevens jardine tav in that order. Porcini and Hutton not far behind.

20 Feb 2024 10:28:45
Mushrooms in defence John? know who u meant, predictive txt a nightmare, Porrini.

20 Feb 2024 11:47:20
John - porrini is a left- field shout. Good defender though.

Im surprised you went for him.

Great thing footy though. All have our own perspective.

I would agree with the above guys mentioned but would also say hutton was a good right back, and dare i say, to a lesser extent, so was whittaker.

Different game now though. Could tav thrive in jardine's era and vice versa?

20 Feb 2024 12:17:54
Fork lol.

20 Feb 2024 12:28:39
Gary Stevens had some engine it's true but if I had to pick between him and Tav it's got to be Tav every time.

20 Feb 2024 21:06:48
Jardine was before my time and rightly regarded as a club legend. As a few have said before Tav will be spoken about also as a legend whose numbers aren’t complemented by the teams success, his numbers for playing in a poor rangers team just edge it for me. Stevens was class in a team with world class players.
