I actually thought that myself, Der Hammer. ? Like you state, big Soapy is still only 29 years old, and that's still pretty young for a centre half, as they play a bit longer in that position. ? It's a new 1 year deal, with a possible 1 year option, and even if that's met, that only makes Souttar 31 years old.
? I can only assume that it's only a possible new 2 year deal because of injury issues regarding Soapy from time to time. ? Perhaps EHL or John will have info/idea as to why it's a relatively short new deal. ?

SWS, the short-term deal works in both the player and the club's favour.
Souttar's priority has always been about playing, not about money, which I've stated on a number of occasions, especially when there were some outlandish comments about him holding the club to ransom.
I think this deal is evidence of that. If he's not getting regular football next season, he's effectively free to talk to clubs in January.
If he was really all about the money, he'd have been demanding a 3 or 4 year deal.

Scotty was going to say the same. He signs a 1 year deal in case he doesn't play as often as he wants. If not, he moves on, with still another decent deal left in his career. Players coming in need to play well to get starts.

Shocked at the length of the deal, that almost shows a lack of confidence in himself, imo.
Even if we sign a few international class defenders, he should relish the challenge and believe in himself.

Ehl, why would he be worried about getting a deal that was all about playing? He's an automatic pick when he's fit, so any games he doesn't play are down to fitness. To be honest, I'm amazed he has taken this deal, unless it is something he wanted, but a one year deal is very unusual for a player of his age and apparent stature.
I would have thought he would have said no thanks to a one year deal. I'll wait and see what else is out there that gives me more security.
