I know it's down to what era you were in regarding who you would probably choose as the greatest player you'd ever seen and we had a great debate about this at work today ?So what's all our thoughts to all the posters on here ie. who was the greatest ever player in your opinion, as there's no correct or wrong answer to this ?I have no doubt for me it was the one and only diego maradona who was the greatest player ever ? Absolute genius of a footballer and what he did for the city of naples playing for napoli was incredible ?I've never seen in my life a welcome like what maradona got at the airport, when he arrived to sign for napoli ?He repaid them when they won the league title and he absolutely was the reason they won it ?Away far too young ?.

Brilliant post, for me personally growing up it was Ronaldinho or Henry with me being 36 I grow up with them. I have a lot of respect for Nesta and totti for what they did for there clubs also.

There has never been better players than messi or ronaldo the stats back that up. The most skillful on the park way out on his own is ronaldinho.

22 Jan 2026 18:30:59
Coops I didn't see much of Maradona but don't think many would argue he was one of the gereatest if not thee. For me though. If I was pressed to name one player in their prime injury free I would say Ronaldo Luís Nazário - The Phenomenon.

22 Jan 2026 18:33:09
For me it would be a toss up between Maradona and Ronaldinho for sheer natural skill. I never got to see Maradona live but I have seen Ronaldinho both absolut magicians.

22 Jan 2026 18:40:02
Diego Armando Maradona for me. But hard to say different eras Messi and Ronaldo wouldn't have coped back then as they would have been booted off the field legally. Ronaldinho is the most skilful player I have ever seen.

Messi hands down better than Ronaldo for me too.

22 Jan 2026 18:44:25
Maldini, the perfect footballer!

22 Jan 2026 18:48:15
Into my 60s now and its Maradona for me too with an honorable mention for Johan Cruyff.

22 Jan 2026 19:00:52
R9 and Ronaldinho. Back when football wasn't robotic.

22 Jan 2026 19:02:02
Diego Armando Maradona.

THE END.

22 Jan 2026 19:11:36
Am in my mid fifties and Maradona was absolutely different class and never seen another player like him✌️?.

22 Jan 2026 19:18:56
Ronaldinho was a maverick totally brilliant but for his longevity I'd say messi is the greatest. being a midfielder my
Personal favourites pirlo kaka xavi.

22 Jan 2026 19:23:52
Maradona, he made his international debut in Glasgow.

22 Jan 2026 19:29:35
Maradona of the Carpathians, i. e. Gheorghe Hagi, for me.

22 Jan 2026 19:33:25
Maradona for me too, too young to see Pele play except in a German POW camp.

22 Jan 2026 19:35:36
Would have to fully agree with Paul's comment. The few years Ronaldhino had at the very top, he has to be my favourite player to have watched.

Could be here all night listing all my favourite players especially back in the eighties when I was getting right into football such a great era for proper football when it was free flowing and players could play the game
I missed the seventies as I was born late 70s
So 80s and 90s for me were a great era for football.

22 Jan 2026 19:54:49
Pele for me with mention for Beckenbaur who changed how centre backs played.

22 Jan 2026 19:58:24
I had the privilege of seeing Ronaldinho play in the flesh.

22 Jan 2026 19:59:47

22 Jan 2026 20:00:04
Maradona by a distance for me.

22 Jan 2026 20:49:22
Yeah Maradona for me, don't think Messi could of taken the bad fouls that Maradona took during the day or some of the pitches and performed like Diego did.

22 Jan 2026 21:35:54
Can't remember who said it but was somebody famous he said the most skilful player he ever saw was Ronaldo the Brazilian one.

Maradona by miles in terms of pure ability, Ronaldinho was special but Maradona was out on his own, Ronaldo and messi have the longevity of careers and their stats are incredible but for just talent alone its maradona.

{Ed078's Note - When fit for a solid few seasons, Ronaldinho was as good as I've seen.
