Here's one for us all to have a debate and discussion on guys ?Who is the better, more natural goalscorer/finisher, kris boyd V lawrence shankland ?

I would say Shankland. Boyd scored a lot of goals. A lot of them tap in, but don't think I can remember him ever scoring against Celtic?
Memory serves me right, anytime he was through on goal against them he would get his head down and smash it straight at the keeper?

Yes, he scored for Rangers v Celtic. ?
02 Jun 2026 20:15:39
At the moment Shankland is about 100 goals behind Boydy.
02 Jun 2026 20:18:38
Boyd, every day of the week, was head and shoulders above Shankland.
02 Jun 2026 20:22:22
He can make that up this season then, no problems. ?
02 Jun 2026 20:25:39
Don't agree, Mph, if I remember correctly, there were plenty of times Sir Walter wouldn't play Boyd against Celtic, did it not take him a long time to eventually score against them.
02 Jun 2026 20:27:37
Boyd a better finisher. Shankland a better footballer.

Both Kris Boyd and Lawrence Shankland are very natural goalscorers, but for me Kris Boyd is an even better, more natural finisher than Shankland, and he's good. ? What I will say is Shankland is a better all round player than Boyd, as he can drop deep and link play. ?
02 Jun 2026 20:59:12
My thinking is exactly like Stars, Boyd better finisher, Shankland better all round player.
02 Jun 2026 21:26:28
Boyd better goalscorer, and is the top goalscorer in the SPFL.
02 Jun 2026 22:03:35
Boyd is most definitely the best goalscorer, and if I remember correctly from this forum, everything else is immaterial, as goals are all that counts for a striker; well, as long as we are winning and we like them. ?

Between the two, Boyd was the better, more natural predator, however, he had a limit & it did not extend to Old Firm or Europe.
Let's hope LS does better in that regard.

Kris Boyd by a country mile. The guy would be on the scoresheet almost every week, often multiple goals. He would hit 30+ a season sometimes. His goal scoring rate was ridiculous. He also did a solid job for Kilmarnock later in his career.
Also, I see no mention of Desses. When that stat of 52 goals in the first 100 games came up, there was a list of other players with similar scoring rates.
Boyd and Larsson were on the list. The return of goals Dessers gave us was similar to those two over the same amount of games. Dessers scored some great goals for us in Europe too against Betis and Man United. Dessers is criminally underrated by our support. That guy did brilliantly.
03 Jun 2026 06:58:52
Agreed, Rohl, on Dessers 100%. ?
03 Jun 2026 07:53:08
I agree, Rohl. ? I rated and liked big CD9, and he was vastly underrated by a good few of our supporters. ☹️ He had one of the best attitudes I'd seen in a Rangers player for many a year. ? ?? He absolutely was talented, and scored some cracking goals for us in a 1 in 2 goal scoring record.
? If big Dessers scored all the easier chances, he would have been playing with Real Madrid and nowhere near Scottish football. ? I always did have a soft spot for Dessers, and missed him when he left.

Would be interesting if Shanks had played for us as long as Boyd, how many he'd score. I don't think there's much in it for a natural goal scorer, maybe Boyd edges it, but Shanks is a more complete player the last few years. That said, Boyd was also more than just a finisher by the time he went to Killie the second time.
03 Jun 2026 09:11:27
If we are comparing those two, I agree with the consensus above - Boyd the better finisher and Shankland the better player. Dessers doesn't come near either for me. I really enjoyed watching him, but he isn't close to those two. In addition to that, none of the three mentioned comes anywhere near to Ally McCoist.

Boyd for me, though he was purely a box player, he was often dropped in games where we needed more than a poacher. He wasn't used much in Europe or against Celtic, when we needed strikers to come back and help midfield or defence.
The Dessers debate continues, and I agree he was hammered for missing easy opportunities, but never appreciated for what he did do.
First, we said we needed a striker scoring 20 +, and when he achieved that we changed the goal posts to 30+. Poor guy had no chance with our fans.
