A question i'll throw out to one and all.
Taking into account the style martin wants to play, do we reckon jack butland is the correct keeper to play this style with what he's asked to do, or do we need another goalkeeper who is much better with the ball at his feet, as well as being talented, on all other aspects that good keeper's need ?If we need to sign a keeper to replace butland for these reasons what keeper do we reckon we could/ should sign ? Should be interesting.

Who do we get that can do both that we can afford though, his form so far in the season is good and for me that's the most important thing.
Souttar as well isn't comfortable moving out into midfield playing passes, he's lost it in bad areas so many times, and his pace worries me when he's so high but he's been asked to play that way.

Butland only had 57% distribution success.
But he pulled off some magnificent saves.
PSG are selling Donnarumma as he isn't apparently very good with the ball at his feet - though Man city are apparently interested even though Pep likes his goalies to have good distribution. Go figure?
Personally would rather have an excellent shot stopper and someone who commands his box for Scottish football than the sweeper keeper.
Or how about the club just appointed a manager who can use the players at his disposal? With a few tweaks here and there.

EHL they managed it against Plzen or was that just luck. you have also said that you think the changes to implement his style should be more incremental. so that would seem to imply that you think it can be implemented with the players we have but done more slowly. may have picked it up wrong but that was the main gist I think.
re Butland I want my keepers to be able to save the ball first and foremost. a lot of the balls he passed away were long and up right side. we aren't caught out of position from that. we can be from shorter ones into MF but he is an intelligent player so he will hopefully get better the more he is asked to do it.

Sorry but any keeper that's as good as Butland but also good with their feet is not playing in Scotland.
Great goalies are in short supply.

I don't think we have any players to play that style and what I will say if it wasn't for Butland we would probably have one win in 6 games.

A keepers main role is to be a shot stopper, which is what Butland has being doing well so far. I always look at Man Utd. They got rid of DeGea and brought in Onana as he was apparently better with the ball at his feet but he's a shockingly bad shot stopper.

John, i honestly think our new owners will give Russell Martin time to get things right and by that i honestly mean 2 or 3 transfer windows mate ?
Whether that proves to be the correct decision or not none of us knows this early in Martin's Rangers managerial career because we just can't keep going down this route of changing manager's every season or so ?.

Was Butland playing sweeper keeper around the edge of the box? Did our six split the centre halves?

I don't think we can sign players who can immediately fit into any system. We simply cannot afford that level of quality, nor attract them to our league.
What we need to do is bring in players with the potential to play in the system and coach them over a period of time to become an effective team. There is far too much emphasis on the individual, be it a player or manager, at the moment for me.
It's about the team and how they play. You get teams at a much lower level than us who play good attacking football so I see no reason with good coaching why we cannot do this.
But guess what! It takes time, stability and hard work.
Although we have changed from top to bottom I just don't see that happening and reluctantly agree with John, I'd even go as far as players like Keiran Dowell outlasting the manager. This will continue the cycle and not only will JB outlast RM but will likely outlast our next manager as well.
We need to start referring to the players contracts in managerial units rather than years. Butland has a 2 manager contract, Dio a 3 manager contract and Igamanne is currently on a 4 manager contract.
It all feels like madness to me, especially making this same argument every manager (not year, lol) .

Butland my not be best for the system but he is the best at saving us from the mistakes the system is causing. Without him we'd have been hammered in almost every game so far.

We only have 2 wins in 6 games though lol. Not a massive difference. And I'm happy with JB. Just don't see the big difference.

Sir Walter I don't think we could attract a keeper of the required standard to fully play martins style, those goalkeepers are being signed for huge money and even then it doesn't work sometimes just look at ramsdale when he signed for arsenal and being replaced after a season. Butland for me has actually performed well so far and kept in us the European games. Ball playing is not his strength and never will be but I don't see us being able to recruit better for what Martin wants at the moment.

That cause he was originally signed on a 4 manager contract with an optional 5th manager based on complete failure to win anything.
