This Rothwell and Mcgregor discussion, my say Rothwell is a better footballer than Mcgregor now, Mcgregor is going back the way, Rothwell has played in far better league all his career, this he hasn't played in the champions league is a total farce, what has he Mcgregor ever done in the champions league? what has Mcgregor ever done at International level? why has Mcgregor never stepped up from playing in a poor league all his career? don't tell me trophies in Scotland, let's just see how the season goes for Joe and Sws or me won't be the only one saying Rothwell is a better footballer than Mcgregor right now.

Why has Mcgregor never wanted to play with the big boys and very happy staying in a very poor league? that is my only question, every player that plays the game was tested against the best weekly in games, unless he's lacking in his own capabilities of playing the best weekly, any player that is happy playing in Scotland tells me he's happy about being one of the best in a below average league.

Fort Rangers and Celtic have won this league 55 times man, you think it's better than poor or very average at best then fair enough, we've got teams like Dundee and Falkirk in our top flight that would struggle being in league 2, that is the reason our league is ranked 46th.

Of course the SPL is very poor quality was it the year Kilmarnock finished 3rd And went out of Europe to a part time Welsh team. The smaller teams in the SPL which probably make up 3/ 4 of the league sign players from non league football in England. We haven't won the league more frequently because Celtic have had a lot more money, been well organised and have had a will to win which we haven't matched hopefully until now. ⁹.

McGregor hands down has played against better players unless I am mistaken but rothwell never played In a European match till Wednesday there. It's embarrassing and people wearing blue tinted specs to even suggest rothwell is better than McGregor or even remotely close to having a better career.

Fork, doesn't happen often but I disagree either you on this. Our league is very poor. The reason we have not won it is the second team in a two horse race have been stronger than us due to us being in the state we were in. Battling it out with them year after year does not make it a good league.

My star maybe mcgregor is loyal to the club he loves, maybe cups and legacy are more important to him. Mcgregor could easily have played in a mid league epl team. The fact that player most chase the big money but it's good to see a player who wants to play for 1 club and stay loyal unfortunately for us he has done that.

Sport Beale but no way is rothwell better than McGregor at the same age. McGregor would've played for a better quality of team than rothwell f he played in England.
He stayed cause he got a a Celtic fan and had him an own ambition of becoming their most trophy laden player whicj would've happened of wasn't dor James Forrest.
He stayed to play champions league football. Test himself against the elite.
He's an international player
He's performed outstandingly against Real Madrid.

Star lots of reasons why he might want to stay: family settled; his wife doesn't want to move (perhaps related to Coady's wife?) ; he gets to play champions league every year' he is paid around £30k per week and enjoys his football. that doesn't make him a poor footballer nor does it make anyone who has played in England better just by playing there. I like Rothwell but he played most of his career in Championship. I could ask the same question of why no-one has come in for him at EPL level. not a criticism just a balance on the McGregor argument. Final point McGregor has performed year on year in SPFL and driven a Celtic team to titles. Rothwell has played 90 minutes so joke or not a bit early to compare him to one of the best midfielders of our generation. you are right let's just see how the season goes. Personally I want him to succeed as it might mean we have a better chance but he can be the best player in the league but if others don't perform then it doesn't matter. hopefully we see more good performances from our own Ryan Giggs, Findlay Curtis ??.

McGregor tests himself against the best in Champions League which is a higher level than any level Rothwell has ever played. McGregor has played almost as many games in the champions league (27) than Rothwell has in the premier league (31).
You always have this need to be correct and have the last word, you are wrong again. If our league is that bad then why has all of our "quality" players and the likes of Koppen, PC and MB that you defiantly told us were all top managers and players failed?
Why have we not won the league star?
McGregor has league titles, trebles, champions league and international experience. Rothwell has nothing except a handful of EPL games. Rothwell has been a journey man down south.
Rothwell looks like he will be a player for us but McGregor is a better player and the benchmark that Rothwell has to achieve. If Rothwell wins half the honours with us that McGregor has won then Rothwell will be doing well.

Star what has Rothwell won in his career. Until last season nothing of note. He may have played against those teams in the EPLK but surely playing against the likes of Barca, Bayern and Madrid teams is more than comparable to that. in the words of almost every ex pro who has won: show me your medals.
The main problem I have is that if McGregor played for us then you and some other would love him.

Gimme peace……McGregor is a quality player, always has been and still is. He may not have went to the epl, or any other league better than our own…… but let's put it this way……. he has had a chance to have an extremely successful career at a club he supports and has been rewarded financially for his contribution to celtics history. No doubt when he retires he will go on to be an ambassador for Celtic and a legend in their fans eyes .
Everyone on here are Rangers fans ( apart from the lurkers with crap patter) . Are you saying you wouldn't do the same if it was yourself playing for rangers, captaining your club of choice, picking up trophy after trophy, playing in Europe every year, internationals, earning a small fortune while doing it ……. But you would give all that up to play for a low to mid level epl team who would probably be in a relegation battle every other year or end up in the championship

The original question was between Rothwell and MaGregor, when you look at their careers no way is Rothwell better than MaGregor, but respect it's your opinion and I don't need iffy comparisons to prove your point.
You did say Rothwell tried and tested against top opposition like Man City and Liverpool, apart from a limited time at Bournemouth where he was in and out of the team he has been mainly a championship player so he hasn't been proven at that level and that's fact.

Not seen enough of Rothwell to say either way but CalMac is not the player he was a few seasons ago, you can see time has caught up with him.
Us on the other hand have been rank rotten in the league since we won 55 with poor player recruitment and managers not been good enough or just not getting what we need.
Rothwell and CalMac are different players both have different abilities and bring something an different to the teams they play in
CalMac is a good leader on the park and good in transitions offensive and defensive he has had good ball retention doesn't lose possession much and can spray passes about the park
Think Rothwell is more attack minded player carries the ball forward more than CalMac does from what I've seen so far and from what I've watched in clips online of him seems to have more flair about him too don't think he likes to play defensively where CalMac is comfortable in defensive and attack
Let's hope my star assessment is right and Rothwell helps us win the league this year
We definitely have a stronger team by looks of it this year than we have done for a long time

As both play in a different era,
It's hard to determine as both Rangers and Celtic had much stronger teams back then
Barry had some great oak hats around him
CalMac all credit it to him can only play against what's in front of him
But would he have been an outstanding captain back in the day would he have been a starter in the old sides back in Barry's day?
When Celtic had players like Keane, Lennon, Petrov, Thomson, nakamura?
Suppose depends what timeline you would fit CalMac into for Celtics team some seasons they had strong midfields others were weaker
it's a hard question to determine but for me Barry is the better player
Played with better players and also stronger old firm opposition back then
Today CalMac like I say can only play what's in front of him but don't think he would have nearly anywhere near the same success if he played back in Barry's hay day.

Star so if we are comparing them NOW we have 1 competitive game to compare them in; McGregor hasn't actually played any to show if he is any worse than he was last year when he was nominated by other players for player of the year. One game isn't enough for me to make a mess of my panties.
However I know we both hope that at end of season Rothwell has played well and dragged us to a league title; rotten league or otherwise I will take the win. It would also be possible for McGregor to play well and they lose it as it is a team game.
Just too early to compare them if you are using now as the timescale.

Star last season isn't NOW it is the PAST. you can't say others can't use McGregors recent seasons and then use Rothwell's. You think Rothwell is better, I am fine with that but have only seen one game so it is too difficult for me to judge on that. seen more of McGregor so easier for me to have an informed opinion on that.
Franco it is about seeing a football player whichever team the lad plays for. It is about having the ability to see a balanced perspective of football life in Scotland. I also think that Star is happy to have a discussion on this and many topics where his opinion differs. not about firing into him and I am sure he knows this.

LBH we play above our weight in poor, very very average league. And its getting worse as teams like Sheep, Utd not anywhere near challenging and two teams playing on carpets. I look forward to gers improving in Europe forcing our way into EPL.
