I think we're all along the thinking now, that Russell Martin will in all probability sign another goalkeeper ? We've already been linked to carl rushworth, matt ryan and the latest being young sheffield wednesday goalkeeper pierce charles ?As regards to charles, coully brought up a very good point yesterday, that our new goalkeeper coach sal bibbo actually was the sheffield wednesday goalkeeper coach and therefore actually worked/ coached pierce charles, i and a good few others didn't actually think of that link, which obviously made me think there could be truth in our interest ? What i'll throw out to one and all on here is this ie. firstly do you think martin will definitely sign another goalkeeper and if so will it be a goalkeeper like young charles, who probably wouldn't go right in as our no .1 straight away, or do you think he'd sign a goalkeeper he'd want to put in straight away, to replace both butland and kelly and become our new no.1 immediately ?As we all know Russell Martin likes a goalkeeper who's not only a good shot stopper, but also good with the ball at his feet, what's everyone's thoughts ?.

I think we only sign a keeper if butland is leaving. We have other areas of the team that need money spent on it and imo butland should get the chance to show he's our no1.
18 Jul 2025 07:57:09
Is one of the keepers not 19?
There is no chance he is being looked at for 1st team!
So I'm not so sure about keepers.
18 Jul 2025 08:03:59
SWS in fairness I think the Ryan link came from you ?.
I think he will stay with the keeper he has. the young SW lad might be a shout if we plan on building for future though.

Gdog, not necessarily. First off, he'll be 20 in 3 days time. Donnarumma was first choice at AC Milan at 16! He came through the Man City academy so no doubt knowing the way they play he will have been schooled to play out from the back and be good with his feet (just as Martin wants) . He is already a full international. As mentioned our new goalkeeper coach has already worked with him and knows him very well. And by all accounts he's expected to go to the very top and likely would be well out our range in even a year or two. That's a lot of 'ticks' in the yes box ?.

I would like a new number 1.
Butland was poor last season.
18 Jul 2025 08:53:30
Yeah I'd agree with have higher priorities just now in my opinion. We need to improve our defence and right wing.
18 Jul 2025 08:57:30
Is it too much in this day and age tojust expect a good goalkeeper to make crucial saves and make the difference in big games rather than being good with the ball at his feet. How many times have we seen recently with so called world class keepers dribbling out and getting caught out. I don't remember shagger or the goalie dribbling or kicking the ball about but their strengths in keeping the ball out of the net made them legends.
18 Jul 2025 09:10:32
I am the same as ows don't think we sign another keeper that could go straight in unless Butland or Kelly leaves.
18 Jul 2025 09:28:40
BT1958, Not when you manager wants the keeper involved far more often, very well being the best shot stopper but if you can't be good with the ball at your feet you won't be in this manager side.
18 Jul 2025 09:37:31
BT andy goram was terrific with the ball at his feet mate ?Angus, you will find that it wasn't myself who started the link/ talk about matt ryan ?.
18 Jul 2025 09:49:58
SWS I thought it was you; if it wasn't sorry. However the only link I have seen for him was from someone on here saying he was now free. all other stories have come from that.

I think we need to remember that the club will be operating on 4 budget forecasts that will dictate our movement in the transfer market.
1. No European Football
2. Conference League
3. Europa League
4. Champions League
So far, the 7 players we have purchased align with budget 1.
Personally I think bringing in 7 players this early, especially as we've not seen a great deal of movement out yet is a real positive.
18 Jul 2025 10:04:05
Ehl, is this an opinion, because if not we r in serious trouble going forward,
Thought we had 8 million with four million committed to Cortes. You said that was our budget
I'm confused.
18 Jul 2025 10:24:23
We ain't bringing in a 19 year old from SW to be our number 1, maybe as a future prospect etc but then what does that say to our young well thought of goalies? If Butland was to leave then I see us bringing someone in but more experienced than a 19 year old. Kelly is fine as back up but not as our number 1 imo of course.
18 Jul 2025 10:29:24
EHL, I'm surprised we have signed so many players already, so it's a real positive. Do you know if any outgoings are near?
18 Jul 2025 10:42:21
If we get champions league EHL and bigger budget you reckon we will see more players brought in or will we stick to 2 or 3 and save a budget for January? ?.
18 Jul 2025 10:53:41
If you're going to try and be smart and call me out John - at least get your facts right when doing so.
You never know, being accurate in your own responses might help your confusion.
18 Jul 2025 11:06:01
Only my opinion, but i really don't believe anyone knows our budget, only the men at the top that will know the funds available.
18 Jul 2025 11:22:29
So, we are signing and planning at this stage for NO European football! The only real source of income we have.
This is nuts and time for me to have a break till after Pana game.
18 Jul 2025 12:19:22
BAR72 I think EHL means the signings we have made are the players we are capable of signing regardless of European income, so we can afford their fees and wages etc. the other budgets align with us making more signings and possibly targets we want that are more expensive or in higher demand (the players may want guaranteed Europe of x level) .
In Summary, we'd likely have signed most of these players even if we had auto Champions league, it's just these are the players we knew we could afford and get in regardless of how our qualification campaign goes. At least that's what I've taken from it.
18 Jul 2025 12:50:43
That's exactly what i took from it dio and tbh it's the right way to do it in my opinion.
18 Jul 2025 12:51:12
Diodefender, spot on.
That's exactly what I was saying.
Also, progressing will influence which players we sell.
18 Jul 2025 13:03:44
John/ Mystar it's only ehl's opinions how many times does the guy need to say it. Of course only the people at the top will know, he isn't trying to pass it of as fact.
