Anyone got any info on Butland? Believe he's in to his final year after the summer. Will we be looking to sell, let him run out his contract or sign him up for another year or two?

06 Feb 2026 10:11:03
Too many gaffs. He makes saves, but that's his job. Tavernier incident, nutmeg on byline, miss kick pushed into own net. A replacement should be sourced now.

06 Feb 2026 10:24:00
Too many gaffs, he's literally saved us 20 points this season.

06 Feb 2026 10:39:46
Lets just win this title first. ✌️?

06 Feb 2026 11:14:56
Personally, I hope we keep Jack.

06 Feb 2026 11:20:08
All the best keepers make mistakes.

Butland has single handedly saved us on many occasions, kept us in games, etc.

Hes the best keeper in the country for sure.

Unfortunately, Butland hasn't had a good defence/team in front of him since he arrived.

But there's no pleasing some people.

06 Feb 2026 11:35:25
Waltersguitar, just wondered, as I bide in Dunfermline and was speaking to another parent when dropping kids off. He's a Pars fan but doesn't rate Mehmet (keeper) at all! Said the noise from the stands for months now was to give Munn a chance, but we've obviously now recalled him. Got me to thinking about Butland.

06 Feb 2026 11:50:53
Keep Jack.

06 Feb 2026 12:02:44
Id hate to think where we'd be this season if it wasn't for him. Probably in the relegation zone.

Yes, he makes mistakes, as does every player. It's just keepers mistakes are more costly.

He's human. Is it possible some people have unrealistic expectations of him?

He's a great keeper in my opinion.

06 Feb 2026 12:03:05
He's a good keeper, got a mistake in him, yes. Should we look for a better keeper? Yes, but not going to hate on him. He's definitely done more good than bad.

06 Feb 2026 12:06:26
Recalled as he was 3rd choice. Boy needs to be playing every week. Butland, for me, has been class this season.

06 Feb 2026 12:44:50
Actually, I just read EHL's post from earlier. He mentions we have agreements in place with a keeper.

06 Feb 2026 13:00:30
He made a terrible mistake on Wednesday, but it wasn't a mis-kick pushed into his own net. The Killie player scored it. He was also at fault for Porto's second goal (not Tav), but he made some good saves against Hibs on Sunday and has been brilliant in other games this season, especially in Europe.

If we are going to replace him, it has to be with somebody better. Could we afford somebody of a higher level, and who would that be? He does make mistakes and is maybe not at the level of the goalies we've had in the recent past, but anybody who thinks they didn't make mistakes too have very selective memories.

06 Feb 2026 13:02:07
Should we, as a club, be looking for better than what we have in every single position? Yes, not just goalkeeper.

That being said, would I be angry if we started next season with Butland as our number 1? No, great shot stopper and has saved us multiple times already, even though he is prone to errors, but so is every keeper.

06 Feb 2026 13:07:48
Butland on for Player of the Year.

06 Feb 2026 13:11:15
Rwn1978, I'm in Burntisland though a Girvan boy. Munn will come good. And, for the record, I'm not hating Butland. However, when I see the quality being sourced and historically we've had some great keepers, Butland has been a bomb scare at times.

Agreed, he's saved us at times and is a good keeper, but he's not up there for me. Well defended though. People seem to forget he's a nervous wreck in front of his own fans. I'll agree to disagree.
Kelly for Queens game, surely.

06 Feb 2026 13:18:11
Wslgersforever, I didn't mean miskick into net. That was two gaffs. His miss kick led to a goal. This season, flapped into own net. Ok?
If we lose the league on goal difference, let's see who defends him.

06 Feb 2026 13:32:41
Munn is three or four years away from first team football at Rangers. He has just went to Forfar.

Kind of shows he is not ready.

06 Feb 2026 13:34:05
Keep, the positives far outweigh the negatives, and he's a leader and a genuinely good guy. Loves the club, and even the best goalkeepers make mistakes, but they also win points with big saves that Jack has done time and time again.

06 Feb 2026 13:50:31
I'd like a better goalie, but wouldn't be sad if he stays. Has pulled off some amazing stops, but some of the errors have been bad. Not as prolific as the game savers, but we have had keepers before who saved games with fewer errors.

06 Feb 2026 13:55:14
Every keeper makes mistakes, if they didn't, they would be worth 100m, he saves us more than not and pulls off some terrific saves.

06 Feb 2026 14:12:40
Butland is a very good professional. We should look to keep him at the club. He understands what the club is about.

06 Feb 2026 14:47:58
Walter, I'm a Bathgate lad myself. Was lucky enough to grow up in the era when we had 'The Goalie', then, of course, the likes of Klos and McGregor more recently! It's going to be hard for any keeper to live up to those guys. Those were the days. ?

06 Feb 2026 14:57:21
There have only been 2 occasions where the league has been won or lost on goal difference, so the chances of it happening are really small. And how do you judge that Butland's error was the one goal which caused us to lose the league, if it were to happen? What if we win on goal difference, then it could be argued it was the multitude of saves he made for near certain goals which caused the circumstances for us to win it. What about other players in other games who made mistakes that led to goals? To blame Butland for that mistake just defies any logic.

I suspect he will be here next year, and maybe longer, but that would depend on salary demands and if better is available at the right price. Personally, I would keep him next year, buy his long-term replacement, and give him a season to settle into the role of being our GK.

I think every player we have, there is always a tendency for fans to think the grass is greener. Keep the best we have, those that aren't problems, and add quality to that.

06 Feb 2026 15:26:10
We would still be double figures behind in the league and embarrassed in Europe if not for Butland. Fact.

06 Feb 2026 15:34:04
Munn is leaving is he not? That's what I've been reading.

06 Feb 2026 15:50:40
Agree Butland has been better this season and has come up with some big saves, but his flaws are obvious. Doesn't command his box / doesn't come out his box / not comfortable with ball at his feet / doesn't deal with crosses.

More than a decent shot stopper, but GK position is about so much more now. And remember, he's not just prone to a mistake or 2, he's prone to some big clangers.

06 Feb 2026 15:58:30
He has made a few mistakes, but generally been good. The grass isn't always greener, look at all the issues Celtic have been having trying to find a decent keeper.

Ideally, we want to bring in a potential replacement and have both in the squad for next season to compete.

06 Feb 2026 16:01:54
Can't believe anybody would want him to leave. He's been outstanding this season, and if it hadn't been for some crucial saves, we would be mid table right now. Has a mistake or two, but who doesn't?

06 Feb 2026 16:05:58
GDog, off to Forfar on loan. ?

06 Feb 2026 17:00:52
Walter, if we lose the title on gd, then sure you can look at the few goals Jack was at fault for, but on the other side of it, consider how many games we drew under Martin, and a few so far under Rohl, because we had either poor tactics or inept performances from the players paid to stick the ball in the net.

I'm not 100% confident with Jack, but he's rarely started with the same defence in front of him all season.

06 Feb 2026 17:27:10
Yes, Butland has made mistakes. But what keeper doesn't? He has saved us a number of times this season. It would have been a defeat if it wasn't for him at Hibs.

06 Feb 2026 18:00:02
His shot stopping is excellent, but he's awful with the ball at his feet. If we can upgrade in the summer, we should.

Hopefully our defence will be even stronger next season too.

06 Feb 2026 18:28:04
AllyMcC62, Rangers have the best defensive record in the league, so far, this season. So the "Butland hasn't had a decent defence.." remark doesn't really stand up.

He makes mistakes of his own doing, and always will.

06 Feb 2026 19:11:10
WaltersGuitar, so you are saying if Rangers lose the league on goal difference, it will be down to that goal we conceded against Kilmarnock, which means Butland will get the blame. You think the fans will just forget all the saves that won us games and points, will ignore all the goals given away by others, and ignore all the chances missed by the three terrible strikers we have had up to now, who have definitely cost us bigger wins and points too.

If the league even goes to gd, it will partly be down to a last minute penalty save by Butland at Easter Road, which stopped us dropping 2 points. They will win the league as a team, and if they lose it will be due to the team, not one guy.

06 Feb 2026 19:26:27
He has been culpable for 3 goals, possibly, this season. Beaten at the near post for both Hearts goals and Wednesday. These are included in the stats for goals he has saved that he isn't expected to, which sits at around 7.5. So, on balance, he does more for us than he does against.

Can he punt the ball 40 metres every time and it reaches our player in space? Well, no, but can any outfield player we have? The sweeper keeper idealism everyone has comes from Neuer at his peak, and not many have managed to get close to that. Rather have one who has that positive goal impact tbh.

06 Feb 2026 19:32:54
A lot of the arguing about Butland suggests either A. He can only be a good goalkeeper or B. He's rotten and makes too many mistakes. The truth is somewhere in between.

He has made the second most mistakes in the league leading to a goal or shot (6), and that's including outfield players. Only Mitov of Aberdeen has made more (8).

He has also won us his fair share of points, as Storm points out, in games like the Hibs away last week.

The truth is Butland is a goalkeeper who is capable of the extraordinary and the calamity.

The question isn't should we replace him, it's can we find a goalkeeper as good at winning us points but without the mistakes. That's a much more difficult thing to do and, in my opinion, would cost a fair chunk of change.

Priority is sorting the back 4 next season for me, with the OOC and loans ending. Then it's chance creation and most likely replacing Raskin. From there, if a goalkeeper appears, sure, go for it, but I wouldn't be forcing it.

07 Feb 2026 10:55:36
The mistake the other night was a howler, but he's saved us a lot more than he's cost us this season imo. It's down to lack of concentration that he made it, as he never had anything to do the other night, so maybe he needs work on that.

He has bounced back from being written off so many times last season. Yes, we know he's not always best with the ball at his feet and should just punt it long at times instead of a fancy pass or being too clever with it, but he's the best keeper we have.

I would be more than happy with him as no1 next season and bring in another keeper, maybe to take over the following season.

@superb Jack Butland in goals.

08 Feb 2026 08:35:00
Seriously, what's with all the negativity at the moment? It's like the booing the other day. Normally, i would back the right of people to boo, but as well reported, we were a goal and man up and have been notorious for our slow first halves.

But to single out Butland for error when it was obviously him doing a double take at old man Djiga that put him off lol. Prob thought it was a fan passing to him and not a footballer.

Djiga, stop putting off your team mates lol.
