Derek Mcinnes has stated he already has his leadership group and has chosen our new Rangers captain πThe new Rangers captain is cammy devlin with lawrence shankland as vice captain π€π¬π§
27 Jul 2026 07:31:18
Where did u see this?
27 Jul 2026 07:41:32
I don't think Devlin will play every game, so not sure he can be captain, same with Shankland. It's actually quite tough to do that. Sterling, but he's never fit.
27 Jul 2026 07:46:26
Why hasn't he given the armband to Devlin during friendlies, when he has given it to about 5 other players. You are right in he has almost made his decision and will tell that person this week, so even the player who it will be doesn't know. So he has told everyone else but not the player. Unlikely.
27 Jul 2026 07:55:51
I've got a feeling Godfrey is going to captain Rangers.
27 Jul 2026 08:18:42
Iron, Godfrey for me too. Not that I do (or don't) want him as captain, I think he's who McInnes will go for.
27 Jul 2026 08:20:29
Iron Rangers, think you could be correct, although a loan signing captain isn't ideal.
27 Jul 2026 08:21:18
Only passing on what I heard, guys, and I heard this at Ibrox yesterday. π€ I like Devlin, but I personally think that our new Rangers captain will be Ben Godfrey or Lawrence Shankland. π€ I originally thought possibly Dan Neil or definitely Lewis Ferguson if we managed to sign him, but that ship has sailed, so I think it's between Godfrey and Shankland to be named our new captain, with the other being our vice captain.

27 Jul 2026 08:25:15
Yesterday's chat Godfrey with Shankland VC.
27 Jul 2026 08:26:26
Do we think it's a good idea to hand the armband to a player who's not ours? Yes, we might have an obligation to buy, but as it stands, Godfrey is not our player.
Why would D McInness hand Devlin the captaincy, and not Shankland, as he did at Hearts? Is that not him saying that Shankland was a good enough leader at Hearts, but not with us?! Is that not a bit of a slap in the face for Lawrence?!
27 Jul 2026 08:27:44
I'll be really frustrated if a loanee is our club captain.
27 Jul 2026 08:39:34
100% Dado, mate!
A loanee should never be our captain, and it does not send out a very good message.
What happens if he decides he doesn't want to sign full-time? Or that his team decides not to sell him to us, like The Tillman saga?
Has he ever captained a team? Can anyone on here truly say they know he's captain material? It's not like some on here to get a wee bit in front of themselves, is it? π€£
27 Jul 2026 08:42:08
Coops r u. π£π£ππ
27 Jul 2026 08:42:50
I don't think Neil is good enough to play every game, never mind be our captain and it definitely won't be Godfrey; he's on loan. If we don't get Ferguson, then I would be surprised if it's not Shankland.
27 Jul 2026 08:58:57
Not a chance Devlin will be captain. He's a great player to have on the pitch, he'll get in the faces of opposition and rule them up and help 'gee up' the rest of our team. But, he needs someone in the pitch to 'keep him under control', who'll stop him going too far, who'll step in and 'defend him' if it gets too much.
That'll be who is the captain's job. To basically make sure he keeps in check and doesn't get sent off.
27 Jul 2026 09:10:11
Think Shankland used to dealing with our refs up here during games, and could be a better choice, but really couldn't care.
27 Jul 2026 09:13:50
If Godfrey is made captain, he has clearly shown enough already to suggest he'll be good enough to sign permanently behind the scenes, to the manager he wouldn't make that decision lightly. He is also vocal, good age and is maybe setting example/leader type off the field that other players are respecting.
It can't be someone who's not looking likely to feature every game.
Neil, on play so far, wouldn't feature every game, neither will Shankland or Devlin, although I think Devlin may feature a lot more than most in our fanbase imagined when he signed.
27 Jul 2026 09:19:34
Wouldn't mind Godfrey having it as long as he's up to the job. With such a high turnover and no candidates from last year, then why not? Come next season, we'll also have a much better idea who the real leaders are, so if he stays, he keeps it, if not, we see who deserves it.
27 Jul 2026 09:19:57
I'm not convinced McInnes will care if he's on loan. If DM thinks Godfrey is the best option to lead The Team, I think he'll pick him. I don't care either. He's under contract for a year. Right now he's a Rangers player and we've got an option to make it permanent.
I've not seen enough of Godfrey to judge him as a player or leader on the field as it stands. He was very good yesterday though, long may it continue, Captain or not.
27 Jul 2026 09:26:16
My personal pick would be Shankland for Captain.
Sterling will be out injured within the first month of the season (going by his history, not my desire).
Godfrey is a loanee.
Devlin likely won't start every game.
The rest are all too early in the door, even the likes of Rommens is out injured a fair bit.
27 Jul 2026 09:27:27
If Raskin stays, then maybe he could be captain.
27 Jul 2026 09:28:31
SWS, I'm told players were informed yesterday post match that Devlin will be club captain.
27 Jul 2026 09:29:41
Coldo, that's the problem with your type of fan, you can't tell the difference with friendlies for fitness.
27 Jul 2026 09:35:16
I think it's a fair assumption that those he's handed the captain's armband to throughout the various friendlies will form the leadership group - Neil, Godfrey, Sterling, Shankland etc - and part of this will be to get a feel for how comfortable each player is on the pitch when wearing the armband.
Personally I'd be leaning towards Godfrey based on what little I've seen, and I have no issues with a loan player wearing the armband.
27 Jul 2026 09:53:25
I would go for Shankland with possibly Godfrey as VC.
I would have no issues with a loanee being captain, but one thing that crossed my mind is if we are negotiating with him at the end of the season on contracts, he would have a fairly strong bargaining position if he was club captain already.
27 Jul 2026 09:55:08
Devlin is amazing even in a friendly. But he is not captain today or any day. I don't think super sullen, quiet Sterling is captain material either. I suspect Godfrey. I like my captains to be in the middle and never a goalkeeper.
27 Jul 2026 09:59:02
Don't have any problem if McIness names Godfrey as captain. Can't see it being Devlin.
27 Jul 2026 10:07:14
Sws, McIness has made up his mind. You telling us other people know his thoughts? Believe what you heard was nonsense, mate.
27 Jul 2026 10:11:04
Don't think Godfrey will be captain as he is on loan and doesn't seem to stay fit for long, going by his last couple of seasons. Think it will be Shankland.
27 Jul 2026 10:17:33
I think Shankland will be captain. I haven't seen enough of Godfrey, but I'm not sure having a loan player as captain is a good idea imho. Could be a very short term appointment, whereas Shankland will likely be at the club for several years.
27 Jul 2026 10:32:57
I don't have an issue with a loan player being captain either. He has captained Norwich a couple of times at age of 21 and was England u21 captain for a game. McInnes obviously thinks he might be good in position to at least give him the armband. Does giving him the armband show him how much the club want him permanently?
27 Jul 2026 10:34:37
At Hearts Cammy Devlin was an absolute nuisance to play against and we're seeing for ourselves why McInnes rates Devlin so highly. π I think at this moment in time Devlin is the first name down on our midfield starting list. π€π¬π§
27 Jul 2026 10:44:49
Sws, wonder why Shankland was his Hearts captain. Really can't see Devlin even getting thought about as being Rangers captain, mate.
27 Jul 2026 11:21:57
McInness has said in an interview at Hearts, he preferred a CM or CB to be his Captain rather than a CF, but he saw no leaders in those positions so he gave it to Shankland. He's had his say in recruitment I'd imagine, and if he thinks the above then it might be a new arrival and not Devlin as he could've gave him it at Hearts.
It might not be Shankland either based on the above.
27 Jul 2026 11:29:29
Ferguson will be captain hahahahaha.
27 Jul 2026 11:38:10
Big Blue ππ a month later I wonder if it's still close! Chris Jack still talking nonsense, knows nothing π€·πΌββοΈπ
27 Jul 2026 11:54:56
BbJ, I was going to post that lol I actually believe that is true though ha.
27 Jul 2026 12:17:33
Interesting that Dujon kept the armband when Shankland and Neil came on. Not saying Sterling will or won't be. My thoughts at the time were more towards dm, not made his mind up yet, or the long term skipper is not in the building yet.
27 Jul 2026 13:41:30
EHL, How much difference does a captain make these days? It used to be a respected position, but from what I can see in modern football, players seem to put their own game and progression before team.
Also, it's coaching and setup more player led now. I've seen that creep into football.
