As most on here know I was born into a huge Celtic supporting family, my mum had 7 sisters, 2 brothers, my dad had one sister, so quite a large family who all supported Celtic.
At age 5 my mum's boyfriend took me to Ibrox and I fell in love, obviously! My question is, was everyone born into being a Ger, or are there other instances like myself out there?

My father actually played for Celtic although only a handful of appearances in the 1950s. I remember wanting Celtic to win the 1970 European cup, but from secondary school, it was only Rangers for me.

BB4 - I was born in 1974. few years after the disaster.
My Dad was a massive Gers fan but he never went back after that day.
By the time I was born he had been a Thistle fan for a couple of years.
In fact, my first word was Thistle.
We lived in the corner tenement at the top of Firhill Rd, overlooking the stadium.

I'm a mixed family, dad's side massive republicans and mum's side massive loyalists.
Hence my hatred towards bigotry now that I'm older. Brought up a Rangers fan since was 5 as parents had split up.
I do believe a child should support their father's team, but I wasn't around my father at that time although a few years later, I was back in contact with him.
Crazy to think how different things could go and how wee sliding door moments can change your life.
That proves how we're only products of our environments, and most of our beliefs are superficial due to our human conditioning.

As many know I was first drawn to Rangers after listening to Charlie Miller talk about the club whilst he played for Brann.
I was hooked by the passion and the fact that Rangers was a huge part of people's everyday.
At Brann they have an extremely loyal and passionate support, but the culture around Rangers was something i found very appealing.

Brought up through the catholic school system but supported Rangers since my first game in 1981 at the age of 4. From a mixed family with a Celtic supporting dad but had the influences of cousins taking me to games from a young age. I do have a hatred for the other side but none of it religious and there's a tiny element of our support that I hold in the same regard. When you're a kid going to a Rangers game and wearing your teams kit with your surname on the back and your heros number 9 proudly underneath it, to get spat on by a fellow fan because your surname is Irish was my lowest point as a fan.
Another fan did batter the guy who spat on me. I was the only Rangers fan at the biggest catholic school in the UK at the time when I was at secondary school and we won the league the 5 years I was there. Story over lol.

Brilliant reading the stories lads. Athole I know exactly what flat you mean, got a pal that stays in that close today. Gal sad to hear that mate, it's fecking disgusting behaviour, have absolutely no time for people like that, I've put my story on here before about why I despise all that nonsense, that and coming from a huge Celtic family, i couldn't possibly hate them, I'm just not built like that anyway.

I was born Rangers but my Da's upbringing was interesting. His Da was a Clyde fan and his mother was Celtic, both his older brothers were also Celtic at the time. He would sneak away to the Rangers games himself from a young age.
Tragedy happens with my Granny and she loses her brother, long story short she ditches the Catholic Church and converts to the Church of Scotland. She then joins my Da and supports Rangers and his two older brothers do the same.

My mum was born on Paisley Road West in 1924 and she always told us her grandfather used to talk about seeing Rangers play at Kinning Park when he was a wee boy! I'm the fourth generation Rangers fan and my son is fifth generation - almost all the way back to the Gallant Pioneers.
As far as I'm aware there never has been a dark side fan in my family either through marriage or birth, something I am very proud of.

Really interesting thread. My Dad was a Rangers fan so I always supported them but most of my wider family support Queens Park. Grew up next to Hampden and was involved with QP for years and have probably attended more of their games than Rangers.

Dad was never really into football much so never pushed into it , older brother went to games in local supporters bus and had to take me one day and I was hooked , not as if we were top dogs far from it in early 80s but the whole adventure of going to games back then was the pull , started travelling all over country with mates the year Souness came.

Hi BB4. Great topic! I started off living in Fife and was a Raith Rovers fan. My favourite Raith player then was Jim Baxter (yes - I'm that old). In late 1959 we moved to the west coast, and six months later so did Slim Jim.
It was no contest - I got my first red, white and blue scarf then and that was me hooked for evermore.

Good thread Bears, I'm a half n halfer like a few on here. Got some bitter uncles on both sides so have seen bigotry of both sides close up. My dad was anti religion, not into football and against the Old Firm in general.
First thing I remember about being Rangers was a top bought for me by my devout Catholic granny when I was around 5.
Once you wear the blue, even as a 5 year old there is no going back, once a Ger always a Ger.

My Father was a Rangers fan and took me to my first game. Never really took me much thereafter but I was hooked. He'd tell Mum that he'd take me, but he'd stay at the local rub-a-dub and get one of his pals to actually take me to the game. I didn't mind as my pockets would be jangling with all the "smash" after being asked "You the big yin's boy? " whilst I stood waiting outside the pub.
My mother's side were all Catholic and Celtic supporters, but she'd no interest in the footy other than always sorting me out with my footy stuff, 1st Gers top/scarf etc, money for games. Can recall I'd a huge collection of Subbuteo teams - a friend used to hand paint any new strips over the old ones. Can remember my Father coming home and standing on the Celtic team I'd lined up in formation on the cloth pitch!
5 kids: 2 boys, 3 girls. 1 son gers daft, the other no interest despite me taking him to his first Old Firm game at Ibrox. "I like the blues. and the greens. but really like the guy in black." Why it took me another 10 years to figure out he happened to be gay I'll never know! π€£
Of the 3 girls, the eldest had no interest in footy other than hoping Rangers won to keep her dad happy. The other 2 Rangers daft. Alas middle daughter passed away on July 4th, 2025, adorned in her Rangers top when laid to rest. Youngest daughter (now 40) and I attended Ibrox together until fairly recently when I began to struggle to make the stairs to our seats, now still travels back home to watch the live footy with me on RTV and shout and bawl at the telly.
If you've got this far. Soz for the long post.

Some great posts here, thanks everyone. My dad was a huge Rangers fan, he used to tell me all about the great teams and players he used to watch. He was also at school with Jim Baxter. He never really said it directly but I have always thought he stopped going after the disaster.
Anyway I grew up Rangers daft and went regularly until I started playing properly and had my own games. Now, I go to as many games as my time allows, but not as many as I would like
Sadly, my own son has grown up in a time that the other mob are in ascendancy and all his pals when he was young supported them and he has tagged along. He's not got a clue about football really and I've always told him he can support any team he likes as long as he doesn't get involved with any of the sectarian nonsense. That's one thing we agree on across the Old Firm divide!

Parlane/dtb great posts guys. Parlane so sorry to hear about your daughter, so sad. Keep the chin up matey, she's always with you π
Tomthumb your bang on the money mate, still a we dairy to this day, different owners obviously.
OrangeT, my dad god rest his soul, was devastated mate, i honestly didn't understand that till he passed, when i started to really think about it, got told by family members, but he never let on to me how much it hurt him, actually quite sad thinking about it, as he wasn't an average fan, Celtic were everything to him. I've told the story on here before of how back in the day on an Old Firm day, we'd all wake up buzzing, put our colours on, take the pee out each other and head off to the game together, obviously going in different ends, meet up at the end, have a bit of banter, head home, the banter back and forth all week leading up to it was just class, some of my best memories of my dad and brother.
One of a few reasons I couldn't hate Celtic fans. I think anyone with hatred, unless it's really warranted is losing, hatred is a horrible thing that eats away at you. Just my own personal thoughts lads, I'm not looking to get into that debate.
STORM IF YOUR LOOKING IN HOPE YOUR WELL MY FRIEND π.

Was an Ayrshire tv supporter as a lad before my old man and his mate took me to my first ever match. Cup Winners Cup semi at Ibrox vs Bayern 1971/72- first time I ever saw Ibrox and it was floodlit too -a magnificent sight.
Lifted over turnstiles(as was the norm) into an amazing atmosphere and been hooked ever since - was totally gubbed next day at primary school - it will be super sweet when we hit the heights again - WATPππ.
