Ed could u run a wee poll please mate?

James Tavernier, Rangers legend yes or no.

{Ed033's Note -

Tav Legend poll

22 Apr 2026 18:50:06
Stevie, I voted no because I think the term is thrown around too loosely.

Fantastic servant? Yes.
Successful Capt? No (but team hasn't been).

Legend? No.

Cooper, McCoist, I Ferguson, John Greig, all legends.

Tav? Not for me.

22 Apr 2026 18:59:53
Totally agree, Athole, define legend, Stevie.

22 Apr 2026 19:13:42
As an older fan, I have many legends to call upon when I look back. However, if I were too young for those guys then Tav would be at the top of my list. Definitely a legend in his time, but can understand why the more mature amongst us don't think so.

I think history will be much kinder to him than the journey was.

22 Apr 2026 19:17:51
Not for me. Not for ability, not trophies won, so surely not just for longevity.

22 Apr 2026 19:23:19
Fair point about Legend. A phrase used far too loosely, but the way it's used nowadays, I'd say yes. Someone who has smashed records for goals and assists consistently year after year for a decade, and will go down in the history books, can be thought of as a legend.

Unfortunately, he was here during some of the worst teams in our history, which will be held against him, but he would have got into just about any of our teams in the past.

22 Apr 2026 19:23:39
Nope, the poll is at an emotive time when he's just announced he's going, so maybe results tinged by sentimentality, I'm with Athole and John on this, great servant and goes with my gd wishes. ?

22 Apr 2026 19:26:27
I voted no because, as others have said, legend gets used far too loosely. Some fans think Novo is a legend also.

For me, he has been a great buy but should have left a year or two ago, but thank him for the memories.

22 Apr 2026 19:26:30
For those that voted no - what about Gazza and Laudrup? And why?

Just curious.

22 Apr 2026 19:47:56
I voted yes. I reckon he has been very unlucky over the years. But for a Kent sitter and a Ramsay penalty miss, he could/should have been the second player to captain us to a European Trophy. His goals/assists alone from RB will make him legend for me and will surely never be matched from a full back ever.

22 Apr 2026 19:49:45
Anyway new skipper. ??

22 Apr 2026 20:52:11
Yes he is. Would he start at right back in a 9 in a row side? Without a doubt.

22 Apr 2026 21:08:39
Gazza and Laudrup were absolutely top drawer players for Rangers, and 2 of the best to ever play in this country. The same cannot be said for Tavernier in my opinion.

22 Apr 2026 21:25:40
I voted no. Zikos, Laudrup a legend as one of the greatest footballers I have seen in a blue jersey. Gazza on football ability, yes, but beating up women, sorry, takes away the legendary status. He had his demons, unfortunately.

22 Apr 2026 21:54:06
Kaiser, the late great Walter Smith said when asked which one would he have wanted in his Rangers team, and his answer was James Tavernier. ?

22 Apr 2026 22:01:29
I've voted yes. The way I look at it is, Rangers have had different eras, 9 in a row, Advocaat, and now the rebuild after demotion. Tav has led us from Championship to wuropa league final and back, winning the league, and for most of that time he has been our best and most consistent performer, coming up with crucial moments, particularly in Europe.

He may not be of the standard of some of the all time greats, but a legend none the less for me.

22 Apr 2026 22:23:07
Yeah, I don't think we can't fault Tav for the mistakes the club has made and the poor sides we've fielded over the years.
He's a legend for me.

22 Apr 2026 22:24:15
They will still be talking about Tav's stats record in decades from now, for me, that qualifies him as a legend.

22 Apr 2026 22:33:39
Personally, no from me.

22 Apr 2026 23:14:17
Was undecided about whether he should be considered as a legend, but when you consider the RB we have had, then it's a no from me.
Do you honestly think that he would have been allowed to take every throw-in, corner, penalty, free kick in the Rangers teams of the past? No.

22 Apr 2026 23:28:37
His numbers will never be matched by a defender ever.

22 Apr 2026 23:38:45
The reason I asked about Gazza and Laudrup was because they were 2 of my favourite Rangers players of all time - but I wouldn't class either of them as legends.

Yes, they both had phenomenal ability, but I think longevity needs to come into it. And neither had that, and I've never forgiven Laudrup for the way he downed tools when running down his contract.

I can see why folk don't class Tav as a legend, but for me he's closer to that status than either Gazza or Laudrup. He's played more games, contributed more in numbers, has been a model professional. The one thing he's missing (and get it) is titles.

But then does that mean Ryan Giggs isn't a Wales legend?

23 Apr 2026 00:00:31
I get what you are saying about longevity, Zikos. What then for Negri or Mols? Those guys only played about 6 months of football for Rangers. The rest of the time they were injured. People say they are legends.

Tavernier has given us 10 years.

23 Apr 2026 00:24:49
So to answer the question,

Tav imo is a legend for his goals and record breaking numbers, he's part of the record breaking clean sheet and record breaking goals conceded, both in a title winning season which he captained us to.

Did we have record points too?

Those records alone as a captain and stopping 10 in a row while getting 55, 1st title since administration, the list goes on.

His goals in Europe are astounding. As I asked above on another thread, when has any other Rangers player in history ever been in a UEFA team of the season?

If he was in Advocaats time he'd play ahead of Ricksen, Porrini, Mo Ross, maybe Hutton too.

Smiths time he'd play ahead of all but Gary Stevens, however u could argue that he'd play then too cause with better players he'd get away with some things he's been slaughtered for these days.

If he wins this title too with some very very important goals then That's a double title winning skipper with all the above, for me it's not even a debate.

I'm surprised so many said yes tbh so I'm happy about that.

James Tavernier 2 Rangers legend and thanks for all you gave and all u done. ?

23 Apr 2026 00:41:48
Scored more goals than Hately who's in the 11z.
Not far away from John Greig or maybe one past him for goals.

If he wins this league he's on same amount of titles as Gazza. How many did Davie Cooper win? Butcher won 3?

So if they're in the greatest 11 and he's scored more goals and played more games, been in UEFA's team of the year, broke records that Gough and co couldn't and won the same amount titles as some of them, he can't be discounted compared to them.

That is one you can't argue against.
But I'd love to debate it as That is great point of points I've made here imo

23 Apr 2026 05:16:37
Just wonderin, did any legends play for Rangers between 1979=1985? Obviously no title winners.

23 Apr 2026 06:00:10
When I think of players, example Pappac who would play anywhere their manager asked, and if, when beaten, they suffered as much as fans, Tav never gave me that impression. Yes, he celebrated a win and liked to talk to media after a win, but how many times did he go into hiding behind fellow players? Yes, I remember getting abuse outside Ibrox, which I thought was out of order, but to a lot of fans that's what it means.

23 Apr 2026 06:53:00
Coops, the late great Walter Smith, was asked who he would take from the current Rangers team, and he said Tav, so all he was saying is he was the best player in that team at the time. Nothing more, nothing else.

I don't understand why fans are getting their knickers in a twist because people said he isn't a legend.

If longevity comes into it, then trophies must come into it. It's everyone's personal opinion on the fella, that is all.

He couldn't lace Gary Stevens' boots.

It also depends what you want from your right back, also. Defend or attack, etc.
Yes, he was in that defence when we won the league. But he has also been in the defence when we have conceded a lot more goals in the league, also, so you can use one to say he must be able to defend when you have more seasons when the defence has been poor.

As I said above, it's a personal opinion from each of us.

23 Apr 2026 07:56:36
No storm, the late great Walter Smith said he would take Tav as his right back in his teams, nothing more, nothing less. ? It's funny how every former player and manager, etc., all rate James Tavernier so highly. ? Ask yourself why, my friend. ?

23 Apr 2026 08:09:09
I offered an opinion on Bailey Rice and you told me I don't know more than the managers of Rangers, Storm. My opinion didn't matter because I'm just a punter, not a manger.

Walter Smith said he rates James Tavernier and would have taken him as a player.

Are you saying you know more than Walter Smith?

Why is it okay for you to have an opinion today, but opinions on Bailey Rice are forbidden because fans can't know more than the managers?
