Any news on James Penrice??
07 Jul 2026 19:40:35
Started pre season with AEK Athens today.
07 Jul 2026 20:41:02
We don't seem to be actually interested in him, be a good squad player.
07 Jul 2026 20:42:06
We don't want to pay what AEK Athens are looking for. I'd expect Diawara to be centre half and left back cover if we get that deal over the line.
07 Jul 2026 20:52:26
Why do we insist on having centre back cover left backs ? did we not learn our lesson last season? Rommens is also looking like he's very injury prone.
We have got to sign another left back.
07 Jul 2026 21:02:02
We'll definitely sign another left back. I would imagine it's already agreed in principle.
07 Jul 2026 21:10:53
Perhaps McInnes is going to keep Nsiala as left back cover, as he is a really good player. Great potential.
07 Jul 2026 21:24:55
Stevie, that's a conversation me and my mate had year or so ago that Nsiala reminded us a lot of Bassey and maybe he'd be better at LB for a bit as he's good on the ball until he matures a bit and then move him into CB much like Bassey has done.
07 Jul 2026 21:28:10
Scrap that, just read he's been told he's to find a new club along with Bajrami, Danilo, Cifuentes and McCausland.
07 Jul 2026 21:29:11
He's not good enough to get a game in his natural position. We shouldn't be going into a season relying on him to play a position that isn't his natural position. He needs a loan and to be playing regularly imo, Stevie, or if we get a good offer about 6/700k with a sell on sell him.
07 Jul 2026 21:33:59
The only thing Nsiala and Bassey have in common is their hairstyle. ?
07 Jul 2026 21:40:22
Ayrshire, I think he'd be a good left back mate, I said at the point Bassey was excelling for us at left back that is at him centre back, and that he had all the attributes to be one of the best in Europe.
I still believe that he has. He just needs a move to a bigger club now.
He's proven that he should be a centre back and he is one of the best in England for sure.
With Nsiala I think the opposite, I think he looks more of a left back than a centre back for me.
If he's to go on loan again this season I'd be saying to clubs who want him that I want him played at left back.
07 Jul 2026 21:58:05
Rommens isn't injury prone fgs. He has missed 8 games before he came to us, and 6 of those were with the injury he was nursing at that time. A tiny bit of research would have shown that.
Yes we do need LB cover, but not because he is injury prone.
07 Jul 2026 21:59:45
Sass Papac couldn't get a game at his natural CB position, great at LB.
07 Jul 2026 22:00:34
Was told Penrice isn't happening, definitely not.
Scally, I'm led to believe, has been told he will feature in the first team this year, so potentially going to utilise youth more and trim squad back a bit and get in a few utility men to cover several rather than two pros for every position.
07 Jul 2026 22:06:13
I didn't say he was, Angus. I said it's looking that way as he's been injured quite a lot since he got here. Hopefully that changes this season, but it would be negligent not to get back up / someone to push him.
07 Jul 2026 22:13:16
Maybe injury prone wasn't the right word, but he looks to me like someone who will pick up a lot of knocks and niggles due to the full blooded energy style of play he has, similar to Tierney.
We definitely need someone in to back him up. Nsiala isn't good enough, and Scally is 16 and never kicked a ball at first team level; he needs to get out and get playing same way Curtis did.
07 Jul 2026 23:00:07
Wishy, you said it looks like he is injury prone when he has been rarely injured. You kid yourself on that, you weren't saying he was, and I will just accept that. But it wasn't, and we both know that.
Getting back up or someone to push him has nothing to do with his injury record, but all about getting players to play their best. So, at leats we agree on that.
07 Jul 2026 23:53:16
Was looking at OOC alternative options to Penrice and came across Dennis Cirkin 24 yr old LB. He has spent the last 5 seasons at Sunderland, but found game time hard to come by in the EPL last season and has not been offered a new deal. I would imagine he will have plenty of Championship interest, but he might fancy linking up with his old skipper Dan Neil at Rangers.
Can't say I know much about the player, but I'm sure My Star could throw some light on his suitability as the resident expert on all things Sunderland.
07 Jul 2026 23:54:29
Fourlads said Penrice was looking likely to be announced. Strange one that he's playing pre season games for his current team if that was true.
07 Jul 2026 23:59:05
If the Penrice deal doesn't happen, I think we could go for young Fraser at Dunfermline.
I believe we have an option of some sorts on him?
He'd be an able deputy.
08 Jul 2026 00:24:58
Folk are entitled to their opinion on Nsiala.
I personally thought he looked nervous and so easily bullied off the ball.
Folk could be right, a loan deal could be the making of him, but if it's that, then do it in Scotland so he can get used to the league.
08 Jul 2026 01:10:36
Robert, he can play cb as well, but very hit and miss, has good pace.
08 Jul 2026 01:24:10
Nsiala is hopeless. A reason 3 managers have chased him.
08 Jul 2026 01:27:16
Said on here multiple times that Nsiala is better at LB than CB.
With a more solid defence to play in than the mess of a defence with Propper he was thrown into, he would be better supported.
Bassey is leagues ahead of Nsiala, other than both being left-footed defenders that signed for us, there is no comparison between the two.
Bassey was seen as capable backup to Barisic under Gerrard.
We were looking likely to exit Europa at the group stage until Van Bronkhorst put Bassey in as CB due to injuries, I think it was, and not by coincidence he played very well there and that became his best position. Our chances of qualifying increased with that pairing of Goldson and Bassey.
We all know the rest, we went all the way to the final. Bassey's value went from 250k to 22 mill in less than 12 months,
He was the top CB in the competition and was named in the Europa team of the season. Ajax and Fulham spent over 45 mill euros in the next 12 months securing Bassey, and we squandered the money we got on LBs and CBs that were utter crap in comparison.
Until Fernandez came in, we have had nothing anywhere near Bassey's quality, with the exception of Fernandez, who as a right-footed RCB (his best position), who along with Bassey, a natural left-footed LCB, would have been our best defence in yonks.
Likely that pairing will be realised in the Nigerian side.
08 Jul 2026 02:21:53
Nsiala has good pace and is a good passer of the ball.
He's physically big and strong.
Strength, pace and power, and a good passer.
He's worth trying at left back or moving into mf.
08 Jul 2026 05:45:54
Another absolutely wild take from our Stevie. ?
If Nsiala was as good as you say he is, then we wouldn't have punted him out on loan.
08 Jul 2026 06:13:02
Msb, how many clubs, including our own, have had managers not fancy players send them elsewhere and they become excellent?
08 Jul 2026 06:43:27
Stevie_G_new, I can assure you Nsiala does not have strength, pace and power. He's showed he's a lovely passer of the ball, but everything else you've mentioned he's proven to lack. Weak defensively, which has been proven. Also, the stuff he lacks can be worked on for sure.
If I'm McInnes, I'd be loaning him out to the SPL this season. Kid needs to play to improve. Thing is, I don't see him having good potential at all and it's why he will probably have an average career.
08 Jul 2026 07:31:57
Chasni, he's weak in the air, mate, that's it.
08 Jul 2026 07:53:05
I had also heard we were interested in Motherwell left back Longelo. ?
08 Jul 2026 08:34:19
Young Scally as cover for me at LB, he has all the attributes to be a left sided Alan Hutton. Smashes into tackles and is rapid with a good final ball.
1 of the best young players we have had in a long time imo.
Perfect for back up in there to get more experience, he needs to be loaned out to play every week if not.
08 Jul 2026 09:11:27
If Nsiala was only weak in the air, teams would be queuing up to sign him. He's been pushed off the ball a couple of times, which has led to us conceding goals. Power also comes from leaping off the ground to attack the ball in the air, which helps his heading.
He's weak for a CB, mate. I could see him becoming a LB or a LCB in a 3, but he really needs to improve physically and a little bit mentally to become a defender at a good level. Comes with games and working hard. He needs to move on and it's why he will.
08 Jul 2026 10:21:32
It was mentioned on here that the deal for Penrice was practically done. It was just the structure of the deal to be sorted.
Remember hearing that Rangers were looking for a loan with obligation and wanted to pay what AEK paid to get him.
But AEK were looking to recoup everything spent on him, ie wages as well. All of this was mentioned on here at some point.
08 Jul 2026 10:35:38
Coisty, what's on here isn't gospel, mate.
08 Jul 2026 11:20:15
I would have rather had Josh Doig at lb.
08 Jul 2026 11:46:36
Nsiala isn't good enough at cb, never mind lb!
08 Jul 2026 12:31:53
BR5, when you g CB's are coming through they quite often, more often than not actually, find themselves pushed out to full back. It's the norm for a young centre back to get a feel for first team football.
08 Jul 2026 13:00:23
Whether it's Penrice or someone else we can't go into next season without another left back. A centre back who can play there only works for a game or two, but if Rommens gets injured longer term we lose a lot of threat without a natural left back. I've also heard suggestions that it should be young Scally to "create a pathway", I'm all for this idea in principle, but we can't have a 16 year old as the only cover for Rommens.
What if he gets injured before an OF game at Parkhead? Playing a 16 year old in a game like that could end his career, not develop it. Let's be sensible, sign a left back and develop Scally with good loans for a year or so.
08 Jul 2026 13:16:19
I agree, wslgers4ever. ? We absolutely need to sign another left back to have competition with Rommens, as well as having a pathway for young Ashton Scally into our first team squad, without putting too much pressure on the young man. ? Scally is a really good young left back and hope he can eventually develop into our no.1 Rangers left back in the future.
? I honestly think we also need to sign another right back as Dujon Sterling has injury issues but is a really good right back and can defend, and of course we now have Ross McCrorie as our other right back. ? ??
08 Jul 2026 13:16:55
Well said Wsl. We 100% need to be better at offering players a pathway, but not 16 year olds who have never played any pro football. 1-2 loans getting him at a higher level each time, and when he's 18 get him in challenging in for a spot.
