Allowing people to drink at the football, what's everyone's thoughts on this? Personally I think it would be a disaster and only a matter of time before it's banned again, just my opinion though.

Can't even have away fans at an old firm. Drink is a big no no.

15 Oct 2026 19:23:04
We already have the Coke brigade, what next MD 20/20 and Buckfast, that's not a tonic for re-introduction, bonkers.

15 Oct 2026 20:12:31
I don't have any issue with it and think it's about time you could have a beer at the game.

I know the OF shame game was just around the corner but football grounds are nowhere near as bad as when this was introduced.

Having a ban does not really deter fans being drunk because it just happens before the game anyway.

Most other large scale events in Scotland it's fine to have a drink and I don't think football's overall record is bad enough to justify continuing the ban.

All that the alcohol ban inside the stadium does is prevent clubs from some extra revenue. If folk want a drink before any match then it's not hard to find a pub/club or drink a carry oot.
Why is it allowed for folk who can afford hospitality?
Absolute nonsense to think just because you can buy some drink in the stadium that will lead to more folk willing to cause trouble because everyone who wants a drink will have had one anyway.

15 Oct 2026 22:21:54
I have quite strong opinions around alcohol in general, so I would be completely against any relaxation of the rules at football.

15 Oct 2026 22:23:27
I'm neither here nor there I drive to games so wouldn't get use of it. Wouldn't be totally against it but would be a pain in arse folk getting up all the time during the game wanting by. So maybe limit to pre game and half time for only time you can buy.

15 Oct 2026 23:23:17
It's sad folk can't be trusted and it would inevitably cause trouble but at the same time would it make it better if folk could drink anyway. Is it that big a thing to say u can't drink for a couple of hours?

15 Oct 2026 22:29:46
People drink before games after games and some still drink during games

Not seeing drunk people is the key because you will never ever stop folk drinking , you could start by asking every pub on PRW rd to close before games , no difference for me , drink a few hundred yards away or drink at the stadium? There was a masonic and a Rangers club a free kick away , always chocka before games , i really don't get the difference , people won't drink much mire during a game, too much waiting and queing imo.

15 Oct 2026 23:10:22
Absolutely correct as per cheers.

15 Oct 2026 23:21:04
I actually think that not too many would be getting up to queue for a pint during the game wishy, I certainly wouldn't myself,

15 Oct 2026 23:28:30
Ask the people who live in the many tenements around the stadium about allowing bars inside , i can imagine their delight.

16 Oct 2026 00:52:53
Don't really have any issues if alcohol is allowed or not.

I'm watching the club Cortes is playing for just now, he's turning players inside out, bet him 13/2 for a goal anytime, his side losing 1-0 half time, he's been impressive the first half though, he's still only 22 years old, think that club sign him.

16 Oct 2026 01:52:04
99% of drink is consumed before and on the way to a game, I can't imagine anyone leaving their seat to go stand in a queue for 15 minutes to get a plastic cup of rank beer!, it's bad enough queuing for sub standard food!
While we are at it, why don't we bring back smoking!

16 Oct 2026 06:58:41
maybe its not for Scotland. I visited the Ajax Arena several times one year and the beer sold is fair and not strong, I reckoned it was about 3-4%, it seemed to be enjoyed in good spirits, but different fans have different ideas about how to support their team.

As said by others, queueing is an issue so consumption is not great. The Dutch had men and women supporting together and very little anger or questionable language.

16 Oct 2026 08:27:55
I've seen it smuggled in, spirits.
Selling alcohol responsibly isn't the problem,
Only sell beer and no more sold after half time.
One person can only buy 2 at a time.
I was at a Giants NFL match last year and they stopped selling after half time.

Responsible control of sales isn't the problem, they need to stop the smuggling of strong alcohol into the ground that can't be controlled.

Was at the 1980 cup final it was just a drunken brawl blue kicking blue green kicking green the ploice just hitting anybody who moved worst memory is the bottles and cans been thrown by fellow bears and hitting fellow bears by the way i like a drink myself but think allowing back in games not a good idea.

16 Oct 2026 08:50:22
Don't think selling beer would effect anything , maybe stop the bottles of spirits and wine coming into stadium to a little extent if any.

16 Oct 2026 09:10:24
Teddy, you're talking 46 years ago mate. I bought water at the last Scotland match and lad wouldn't give me it in the plastic bottle, was poured into a card type cup and handed over, boy in front of me drinking Whisky from a bottle he'd smuggled in the previous Scotland match.

What's better?

Obviously, beer poured into a card type cup and handed over and sold responsibly. Measures to stop the smuggling of alcohol. They were coming off the train before the league cup quarter final at Ibrox against

Celtic full of MD, always 1 that had to shout embarrassing chants at Queen Street while on lookers shook their heads.

I went for a coffee with my son and we just looked at each other and shook our heads. I'd not be selling it at high risk matches but on a Wednesday night at Ibrox against Falkirk and sold in a responsible way as per my previous post reply.

I honestly have no strong opinion on it, it was banned for a reason and I don't think for a second that society in general is ready for it. However, I would also add that people tank it before the game, which might change should they be allowed to get a pint in the stadium. I don't necessarily think it would change that behaviour but it's open to debate.

On the hospitality theme mentioned above, officially you cannot buy or be given a drink from a bar during the game. I can't comment on many places to be honest but in the ground I go to most regularly as a guest, it most certainly does happen!

16 Oct 2026 13:08:38
It seems to me that some people in authority have forgotten why it was banned in the first place and probably never attended games when alcohol was allowed in the grounds .It wasn't pretty I can assure them .
I suppose what they are actually doing is making it legal to sell and buy alcohol into the stadiums but not to bring it in ( bottles and cans being possible weapons) , which means that clubs will be able to overcharge fans for their drinks.

So , its not just a chance for the clubs to bolster their revenue fairly its a chance to fleece their fans , again.

16 Oct 2026 14:58:50
Maybe people will not drink as much or as fast before the game knowing they won't be without a drink for the duration of the game , possibly will ease crowding at games just before kick off too instead of waiting till last minute to finish a pint or half then rush up to the gate, also could keep more fans in towards the end rather than rushing away to get a scoop , all is buts and maybes but personally I find it poor to punish everyone because of the minority.

16 Oct 2026 15:00:10
i would keep it banned for Celtic or high risk games, though not sure if it makes a difference apart from providing a top up to already fueled up idiots anyway.

16 Oct 2026 16:59:59
Teddy, I was also at the 1980 game, took my wife to her first ever football match, hoping to see a Rangers cup win!! She has never been to a game since!!
We've managed without it ( yes spirits get smuggled in) for nearly 50 years, I can even remember Vodka being injected into oranges on the supporters bus!! After the ban.
Changed days.

16 Oct 2026 18:58:40
Lets face it anyone who wants a drink on game day is already halfcut come kick off so a couple of pints during the game will have no effect and this is not the cause of any previous drink related violence.

Limit it to beer no spirits and I have no problem folks want a pint or 2. Only issue would be if we score the idiots that through it in the air.

16 Oct 2026 19:36:57
Imagine if it was like the rugby, both sets of fans, no segregation, booze on sale. What a January Old Firm game that would be 😂.
