I read a very interesting piece elsewhere on Cerny from a very well respected Rangers man. The post was centred around the romantic notion of Cerny coming back, and us fans thinking with our hearts, not our heads.

Cerny is on a reported 45k a week. Will we pay him that? With our wage structure, it's realistic to think we'll pay him around 30k a week. So, on that basis, he'd be down over 750k a year, and with 2 years left on his current contract, plus i believe an option of a further year, that would be over £2m he'd be walking away from. Take that into consideration, plus the fact he'd be paying more tax over here, does anyone really think he'd opt for that?!

Look, I could be wrong, but that's a helluva lot of money to give it.

Bang on my star, can't see him signing (perhaps a loan again). It's the same with Dahl, just don't see him signing.

I suspect we'll sign the centre half that were linked with then end up with a couple of loans.

Sunshine, firstly let me say I hope somehow we can sign Cerny, mate. 🙏 However, I absolutely get what you're saying and I've been told that our owners are hellbent on driving down the wage bill even still. 🤔 I've been told the figure they want to cap for our players on a weekly wage is 20k-25k. 🤔

"My star"?! That's nearly as bad as when you called me a Tim, mate. 🤣

No way are we meeting that salary as well as a chunky sign on fee to tempt him back.
Ah well, at least it kept Dahl of the pages for a couple of days. 🤣🤣

Even paying 5 million for him and 30k a week over a 4 yr deal, it's just shy of 11million quid. For a player who's 29 in October, he'd have no resale value and even if he had 2 good years and moves on you're struggling to recoup his transfer fee and salary for those 2 yrs. Cerny is a no for me.

I'd rather spend a bit more for a younger winger now who we think will go to the next level and sell him for profit in a few yrs. I'd probably would consider a loan for him but I don't actually think he's interested in coming back here. Cerny will rumble off for years. He's the new Weiss in that regard.

Correct, Iron and Sunshine. But it is the way of fans, it seems, that we hanker back to a player who was successful once and think they will be able to reproduce it again. Sima is another example, despite doing very little since he left.

Hopefully, whoever we get has the mentality Cerny had to mostly ignore fan reaction. That is what players need at us: to keep doing the same right thing and ignore the reaction when it goes wrong.

Would hang on for Cerny, and the Turks will have to pay him money to move on.

29 Jul 2026 11:24:54
I worked the deal out 2 days ago and posted it in detail.

At £35k a week for 4 years, on top of a €8m fee and a €2m signing on fee to offset the wage drop, he'd cost us €17.3m over the course.

I really don't think Cerny is coming back.
But I do think we might actually get Duberry!

And I think Duberry would be a much better signing than Cerny.

29 Jul 2026 11:42:03
Angus, the reason we hanker back to Sima and Cerny is because we have had virtually 0 success on either wings over the past decade at the exception of a couple 1 year loans and Kent. The fans want someone they trust back cause they have been stung with poor signing after poor signing on each wing.
And I think it's down to the market we shop in. It's very difficult to find a winger who isn't young and going to need time, which we don't give them, or afford a winger who is producing in the here and now.

It's why I would bite the bullet and pay the money for Cerny as you know what you're getting.
Murkelo and Duberry might well turn out to be very good players, but for me they have every chance of being another Gassama who is nowhere near ready and probably needs to play every game to develop, and when you're not producing regularly, you don't get that at our club.

Jesus Christ, I've had a mare there, too early, and I was still half cut. 😂😂

29 Jul 2026 12:10:46
Sunshine wouldn't expect nothing less from an arse. 😉

29 Jul 2026 12:58:46
Fans want him back purely and simply because with 17 goals and 8 assists in the one season he was here he proved he can deliver in this league, so would be a safer option than taking another punt (Antman, Gassama etc) that generally offer very little, if he's too expensive, we move on, but if it can be done, then do it.

29 Jul 2026 12:59:36
Basically what you are saying is that we should forget trying to add some real quality to the side because we won't pay the fees or the wages. We should settle for journeymen and wee boys on loan as that's all we can afford. Maybe you're right, but that's a sad place for our club to be under the new ownership.
All clubs have a hierarchy of players, and they pay their star men more in wages than others.

We should be able to do that with one or two, especially when you look at what we have done so far. Despite the infighting across the city, they are investing heavily on forwards and intend to blow away this league the way they did before last season. Can we put up a fight with our current attitude?

29 Jul 2026 13:25:59
🤣🤣🤣 All good fun, lads!

We might very well want Cerny, but will he want to sign if it means giving up so much money? We can debate all we want on whether we should overspend on him, or not, until the coos come home, but if he doesn't want to pee over 2m away, he is never signing for us.

Does anyone really think we will pay £8m plus on him then match his £45k a week? If you do, I'd love to live in your heads for a while as it must be smashing.
