Rangers Review today confirming Rangers are monitoring Elliot Watt for a potential summer move.
29 Apr 2026 14:29:37
If we are not looking at Just and Slattery, we need our heads examined!!
29 Apr 2026 14:37:29
He's a good player. We are most likely going to need 2 CMs, maybe even 3, because Barron wants first team football.
29 Apr 2026 14:37:51
Should be looking at him, as he walked about Ibrox on Sunday as if he belonged there, created space, pinged balls about and upped then slowed the game to suit. Don't think they actually said Rangers are 100% in for him, but must be getting looked at. Missed out on too many players from this league.
29 Apr 2026 14:45:03
This, I hope they are wrong about Murph, I get he has had a good season, but he has played almost all his career in League 2 and, let's face it, the amount of space we afforded him, he could effect the game easily.
Would he be capable of stepping up to a club our size and the pressure, but if Rohl wants him, then we back him and hope he can step it up.
29 Apr 2026 15:01:24
Bbj, I am in the same boat. I have no issues with them signing him as a back up or squad option, but I'm hoping for a higher quality signing for that six role. The article also mentioned it's expected within the club that at least one of Dio and Raskin will leave this summer, so I definitely expect, if we make big money on Raskin, that a player more like Silas Andersen to come in rather than Elliot Watt, but I would take both so that we have two tempo setters in the squad.
I also don't think we'll see the 4-2-2-2 next season like EHL has said. I don't think this is Rohl's preferred set up. At Wednesday he came in and set them up how he needed to, to get through the season, then the following season he wanted them to play more ball dominant. Barry Bannan spoke about it on Open Goal.
29 Apr 2026 15:05:04
BigBlueJim, same can be said for 99% of players we sign. Think the point is you don't know until you arrive, not really the fans to question that.
We've had plenty of big players from big clubs come here and crumble.
29 Apr 2026 15:09:06
I concur, Murph, as a back up I'd be fine with it as you say he would be capable of stepping in if our other 6 was injured, etc.
I agree, I don't think we will see it either next season, and I remember the interview with Bannan, so I hope, with his signings and the backing expected, we see the Rohl train get going fully.
29 Apr 2026 15:16:03
I'm a big fan of Elliot Watt. He is a proper number 6, and the type of player we have lacked for years. He can shield the defense and bring the ball out from the back - it's that simple.
None of the midfielders we currently have can do this job. They all want to get forward at some stage (especially Raskin, who has no positional discipline at all), or play high risk passes. The job of the six is to win the ball and recycle possession. Scott Brown did this for Celtic, and his pass completion rate was one of the highest in Europe, not because he was a great player, but because he was disciplined enough to keep it simple.
We need a player like that now. It will give our team a foundation, more solidity of shape, and allow the other CMs to be more effective.
If we had Watt, we could deploy him as the 6 in a 3 man midfield. Play Raskin in front of him as a box-to-box central midfielder, because that's what he is. Of all the players at Motherwell, Watt is the one I want the most.
Some are pointing at the recent Rangers game and saying 'he only did well because reasons'. Watt has been playing like that all season. His performance against Rangers was just the most recent example of that.
29 Apr 2026 15:42:21
I agree RohlWithCheese, I'd have Watt at Ibrox in a heartbeat. All the talk of "could he manage the step up" is nonsense. Bigger reputations than Watt have arrived at Ibrox and crumbled like Skov Olsen, Joey Barton etc.
29 Apr 2026 16:17:14
I wouldn't be keen to see us sign Watt.
29 Apr 2026 16:42:19
As soon as a player has one good game against us, everyone jumps on the sign him bandwagon.
Like when people wanted the St Johnstone manager ooft.
29 Apr 2026 17:15:51
He is a good player. But I expect better, like Anderson.
29 Apr 2026 17:37:56
Watt's been a consistent performer this season against most teams in the league, not just us.
29 Apr 2026 17:42:02
Peter, as I have said before, my concern is he would take up one of our 17 foreign slots,
However, if we replace Raskin, Diomande, Chuckuwani, it's about balancing numbers. If we get him for under 2 million, may be ok, but he has had one decent season in his career imo.
Many Motherwell people I know think just is a far, far better player.
29 Apr 2026 18:18:43
I remember it was reported that Rohl wanted Watt in the January window, then he picked up an injury, then it all went quiet.
29 Apr 2026 18:36:26
I may be wrong, but I always think we have a list of targets if we win the league and get into the Champions League (not who wants to come but who we want to get) and a 2nd / 3rd list for not achieving Champions League.
John / EHL, others with insight into football matters.
I may be a bit ignorant on this here.
Would this be the case?
So, depending where we finish, our targets may change.
I fully appreciate we may have a few core targets.
Not explained terribly well, but hope you get my drift.
29 Apr 2026 18:58:21
Like I said in a post on Monday, John, I'd sign both Elliot Watt and Elijah just. ?
29 Apr 2026 18:59:05
Peter, you're 100% correct. If we end up in Conference League we won't be signing many that improve our starting 11.
29 Apr 2026 19:11:37
Pieter, pretty much.
The club builds various financial forecasts based on European qualification that dictate the transfer strategy.
It's not always as straightforward as Target A for Champions League, Target B for Europa etc.
29 Apr 2026 19:21:41
Problem, Walter. To bring in these two which two u get rid of, Raskin, Diomande, Barren, Chuckuwani, imo it does not improve starting 11.
29 Apr 2026 19:39:25
Unless Dunfermline somehow win the Scottish Cup, we'll be in the Europa if we finish 3rd.
29 Apr 2026 22:11:19
I would take Watt as back up, but we need much better for our 6 imo.
29 Apr 2026 22:58:36
Foolmonty. if you think playing in league 2 or at Motherwell is in any way the same as playing for Rangers then what can I say.
Yes it's a massive step up in expectation and pressure and something he hasn't ever experienced so valid point in asking can he do it.
As you have pointed out, many bigger names have struggled!
30 Apr 2026 00:39:02
John, I think Watt would be an upgrade on Chuck from what we've seen thus far, mate.
He looked ok at first, but he's really worrying me. He's turning into Coulibally Mark 2, mate.
30 Apr 2026 08:57:27
Stevie, a guy who Burton got rid of re Chuck, in fairness you gave him nearly three months before writing him off.
30 Apr 2026 10:03:10
Watt has been outstanding this season, matters not about his previous clubs, he's really stood out this season, a number six that can control a game.
30 Apr 2026 13:30:09
John Oreily came from MK Dons and went for £30m.
Writing someone off cause of where they came from is no different than what you're insinuating to me and others.
Exact same thing actually.
30 Apr 2026 14:16:26
Matters not if the lad was still 20, but he's 26 now, and yes, it does matter, Star, as the lad played League 2 level and moved to Burton in League 1, where after 25 games they said sorry not good enough and loaned him to St. Johnstone.
If you think that someone of this ilk is what we need, then we will be in the same boat year in year out.
He is fine as a back up but absolutely nowhere near the standard we need to be consistently winning league titles!
O'Riley never came from MK Dons, Stevie, he had been let go from Fulham and just signed for a season with MK Dons, plus he was just a young lad.
30 Apr 2026 14:27:17
Bigbluejim, but he impressed for St Johnstone last season though, very impressed with Watt this season, maybe his manager is bringing out the player he can be, we need a core of players that understand the league we play in, that doesn't mean he's a first choice.
30 Apr 2026 14:58:15
Star, I'm not saying he hasn't done well, but there is a reason at 26 why he has been in a low level of competition, and this is probably the best season he has ever had.
I'm not even against signing him, but I'm against signing him as our first choice 6. I know many people seem to belittle the step up comment, but it's true regardless.
The pressure and expectation here are worlds apart from what he currently or has ever faced.
It could be the style that Motherwell play that's bringing it out, Star, but will we play the same way next season?
30 Apr 2026 15:26:08
Bigbluejim, some players only get better with more experience, mate, I really didn't know much about Watt until recent seasons, but he has really stood out this one.
30 Apr 2026 15:28:17
Stevie, I did not write him off, I said factually what his history is, he certainly does not improve our team.
30 Apr 2026 16:15:07
Elliot Watt is a far better player than Connor Barron. If he is an option, it would be a good one.
30 Apr 2026 17:39:43
Albertz u may be right, which would mean we can't afford him given some value Barron in excess of 5 million pounds.
30 Apr 2026 20:20:43
Well, John, the form I've seen over the season, he certainly looks a far better player than Chuckwuani, so I'd need to disagree, mate.
He looks a cracking wee player and he's proven in this league.
30 Apr 2026 21:41:12
If you want my honest opinion on him, John, I think he's more suited to us than Raskin. My partner's side is Motherwell, so I've seen enough to think he's the closest to Steve Davis for cheap!
I don't believe the hype around Slatts for that matter. Hot and cold, always injured.
01 May 2026 01:41:18
Chuckwuani looks more and more like Lassana Coulibaly by every passing week.
01 May 2026 04:33:28
BigBlueJim, you seem to do this a lot where you claim a player was let go "because he wasn't good enough". He was let go by Burton because a manager change, where he brought 2 big lads for CM and considered Watt "too small".
He was literally Burton's captain and was stripped by the new coach.
I, for one, do think he's good enough and quite bored of saying he doesn't add anything when we literally all called Barron our best CM 3 months ago.
