Chris Jack reporting this morning that Danny Rohl is considering hiring a set piece coach as well as the ex-player coach role and the 3 names mentioned for ex player role were Stevie Smith, Neil McCann and Steven Davis.
A set piece coach could be a superb appointment for us just look what it's done for Arsenal.

I'd be all for a set piece coach, we def need help in that area. Hopefully their remit expands to how to defend set pieces too.
I'd be happy with Smith, McCann or Davis. Still would Doddsy in there too.

Good set piece planning mates a massive difference to a team. I think you're easily talking 5-10 points per season with the right work done at both ends if the pitch. Never mind the potential for marginal gains in tight cup ties.
I think we've been woeful in both attacking and defending set pieces in recent times so would be 100% for this is we can get a good one in.
14 Nov 2025 10:34:29
Losing stupid goals from corners/free kicks and not scoring enough at other end has been the norm for us for so long - happy to see any improvement there to be fair so am all for it!
14 Nov 2025 10:55:13
Why don't we have one already? It's 2025.
14 Nov 2025 11:41:03
Think if could be Smith.
14 Nov 2025 11:41:53
Rostosto Martin had one.
14 Nov 2025 12:05:14
Rostosto because Clement publicly said he didn't want one. Martin assigned them to one of his coaches who wasn't a set piece special-ist and when Gerrard left he took his with him and we never replaced because the guys coming in didn't want one.
It also mentions in the article that the set piece coach that comes in will be responsible for both offensive and defensive set pieces. So should see us be more solid as well as threatening.
14 Nov 2025 12:17:04
Ayrshire cheers, because i thought he brought a special-ist in mate, I was wondering why nothing was different, because we don't score but conceded many.
14 Nov 2025 12:29:57
Just look at Arsenal it's massive, Great move by Rohl IMO if true.
14 Nov 2025 12:31:23
Will be interesting to see how this one plays out, the majority of head coaches / managers don't use set piece coaches as to be effective they usually require 30-40% of the coaching time.
This is why it's usually integrated within the wider coaching process.
14 Nov 2025 14:34:15
Didnt we have one under Gerrard and it worked well?
14 Nov 2025 14:34:48
Think good idea, until I heard billy bob Thelwell, his other son being lined up.
14 Nov 2025 14:41:00
Interesting EHL.
I wouldn't be surprised if set pieces contributed to 30-40% of goals for and against. Seeing we are constantly troubled by set pieces and we've got on of the best set piece takers in our history in Tav, I'd say it would be very much worth spending much more time coaching this.
14 Nov 2025 14:48:07
Something needs done as our defence and attack at set pieces is absolutely woeful.
Any improvement will be welcome.
14 Nov 2025 15:44:51
Rostosto, I was going post similar, we do lose a good amount of goals from set plays.
14 Nov 2025 17:38:21
How about we just have good all round coaches, absolutely no need to justify someone to teach a professional footballer how to defend or attack set pieces. Especially on the money they get. Ludicrous football strikes again. Baffles me how pampered these aholes are.
14 Nov 2025 17:42:12
I've been closing my eyes at corners for years, ironically so have most of the defence.
14 Nov 2025 18:13:08
Not sure a set piece coach is for teaching you how to defend, would that not be a defensive coach. i think EHL meant that only 30% of the time coaching would be on set piece, not that we score or lose 20-40% of goals from set pieces.
14 Nov 2025 18:56:27
Rostosto, again, I think the perception on this one can skew reality.
We typically average around 0.8 goals conceded per game, with around 13% being conceded directly from set pieces.
If anything I would suspect that the set piece coach would be more focused on making us a better threat from set pieces as we do get a much higher than average corner count and we definitely convert much lower than average.
14 Nov 2025 19:11:25
We should have a set piece coach but we would also need to sign some players who will attack the ball in both boxes. Tavernier gets slated at times for us not scoring from corners but a lot of his deliveries are into good areas but we haven't had a centre back brave enough to attack the ball since Goldson and Helander left.
Currently Djiga and Souttar are no threat and Cornelius is actually better at anticipating the second contact than he is at contesting the initial cross.
15 Nov 2025 12:06:17
Regarding the ex-player coach, I thought that when Barry was in charge our midfield 3 of Barron, Raskin and Dio worked very well. Due to Barry? Or Dodds/McCann? Whoever comes in they need to have a personality to work with and challenge Rohl and not just pick up the cash as a fans rep in the dugout.
15 Nov 2025 12:34:53
Big Albertz what a set piece specialist right there
Smash it as hard as I can
Guy was awesome ? ? ? ?.
16 Nov 2025 13:45:58
Blue Dream, that wouldn't work for corners and wide free kicks.
