At the meeting with Patrick Stewart, he did say contingency plans were in place and hinted that if Russell Martin was to be replaced they'd wanted a possession based manager to replace martin, as that's the model route they want to undertake for rangers, going forward ?That would rule out Sean Dyche ?.

19 Sep 2025 21:45:01
That would rule out a few names Sir Walter imo.

19 Sep 2025 21:56:21
PS is a muppet. I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth. Rangers are really testing my mental health and patience just now ?.

19 Sep 2025 22:02:35
Ffs it's ok have possession but it's how quick you play with that. It can't be slow and ponderous.

19 Sep 2025 22:44:48
SWS it would mean if we keep that style we don't have to change every player ever time we change a manager. makes financial sense as we can keep the squad we have and build on it every year. rules out McInnes and Robinson as well I think. Brendan Rodgers? ?.

19 Sep 2025 23:16:19
Angus, the current players have so far shown that they can't play that style though as performances and results have shown. Just a random idea, but perhaps our manager should pick a style and tactics that our players are capable of playing and can get us wins in the league.

19 Sep 2025 23:35:37
I get the thinking with it meaning we don't have to change players ect.
But surely players should be able to adapt to any manger that comes in.
We've tried this possession based football with gio beale clement and now Martin.
And it's not exactly been successful has it.
Surely we should see that by now and consider trying to play a different way.
Teams come play us with zero fear never mind respect they know just sit deep and we're dumbfounded in how to break it down.
We legitimately play the worst brand of football in the league it is actually mind numbingly boring to watch.

19 Sep 2025 23:46:22
Just my opinion but against most teams in scotland we usually have 60 70 % of ball home and away so possession never really been problem breaking teams down has been until rm most teams would sit back try counter now they going for the throat 1st half against hearts they only had 35 to 40% but seemed like the a lot more any manager will have more possesion than opponents but need to create more.

20 Sep 2025 00:04:13
Possession based means nothing! We currently have a clown obsessed with this so called tactic and despite having the majority of possession in our first 5 games we've not won?
The board need to grow a set, admit their error before the fans are lost for good!

20 Sep 2025 07:24:38
We played possession football vs Plzen at home but moved ball far quicker from back to front and got both wingers in play asap - it was plain to see - this is not happening now and most of other games so WTF? - Stevie Wonder could notice the difference - Totally fed up with reverting back to slow 5 yd passes across back four which ALWAYS has been our down fall - players are frightened (or told not to) to play the long diagonal or over back of defenders let's give the speed merchants up front a chance or there will only be one outcome and it involves a P45?Possession football is only effective when you actually have an end product and our end product is constantly leaking goals and giving fans the boak!

20 Sep 2025 07:36:24
Yes i totally understand that Angus but i agree with storm fair enough playing possession based football but we have to move the ball faster/ more direct in attack to quickly get in behind the opposition and create chances, we're not doing that under martin ?Our striker miovski has had absolutely no service whatsoever and we're so very easy to play against and the opposition have absolutely no fear of us ?.

20 Sep 2025 08:14:32
SWS it wasn't a question about what is happening with Martin though it was about keeping that possession based football when he is gone.

so my memory is that they wanted a group of players in place and the manager whoever he was would play a style using the style available but that the owners wanted that style to be possession based. any new manager would be able to adapt to fit their specific brand of football though.

it makes financial sense for the club to do that. It makes football sense as we don't have to start all over again every year when we sack a manager by buying 10-11 players.

20 Sep 2025 08:28:33
You have to be able to play multiple styles of football to ensure flexibility when playing against different opposition.

20 Sep 2025 08:35:23
Our issue isn't that we're trying to dominate possession.

It's that we're completely useless both in and out of possession.

I still laugh at a couple of Hearts players comparing us to a table football team.

20 Sep 2025 08:37:48
What we need is much quicker turnover play none of this passing about the back for stats sake and a more direct attacking route ie ball out to wide players quicker or into the final third quicker utilise players strengths and mask any weaknesses as best we can and this fud just doesn't get it. We were well warned by Southampton and Swansea fans that this wouldn't happen overnight but the problem is you get very little time at a club of our size to implement tactics and ideas so for me get back to basics and start winning games of football or do the right thing and walk away Russell you Brussel sprouts loving donkey.

20 Sep 2025 08:53:09
EHL ? table football team that's pretty damning.

20 Sep 2025 08:55:02
Martin has stated on numerous occasions not just with us but at every other club he will not change his system or style of play.
If it's not working and he can't see that then he is finished.
Us as fans know this and I you must think the board know it too.
Win or lose today he needs to go.

20 Sep 2025 11:56:02
Hi guys, long time reader and thought I would get involved. This one is for Angus. I'm not picking fault with your opinion but how can you say it makes good financial sense and good football sense to keep a squad that suits a certain philosophy when its not a winning formula? In my mind it only makes financial sense or football sense if its successful. How do you expect our player trading model to work or our corporate side to flourish if we continue to stick with what we are doing? I really don't understand how you have came to that opinion because it makes no sense from a football or financial perspective.

20 Sep 2025 13:21:33
The problem is Martin the simple fact that martin is martin is the problem, until Martin realises the problem is him then the Martin problem won't S-MARTIN

There's a manager Russel martin
Who's gers team can't ge startin
Shocking manager right fae the start
Who's hopeless Tacticly when will he depart
We will start winning games n get in2 flows
When Martins dumped
As soon as he goes.

20 Sep 2025 13:30:17
Stewarts rational was that their review had shown that possession based teams are more likely to be successful. Probably true, as most successful teams will want to dominate possession, but its what you do with it and the ability to use the ball quickly and accurately when the opportunity arises that counts . Up here we will almost always dominate possession but passing around the horseshoe in front of the opposition doesn't get us anywhere.
Does make me wonder, why we ripped apart the squad to build a new one and we have players who are incapable of playing that way, In fact some games the only two guys who look comfortable in possession are Tav and Nico.
Stewart has just shown that he should have no part in choosing the new manager or we will end up with more of the same.

20 Sep 2025 14:11:26
Is that not a bit obvious, he's hardly going to come out and say we want to surrender possession and sit in is he?

20 Sep 2025 14:13:17
Playing possession football against teams that 99% will sit in against us is actually supporting the oppositions tactics.

Possession doesn't win football games, goals do. Yes possession should help win football games but our possession game doesn't create any chances. We actually conceded more chances than we create, the fact that we are -2 in goal difference and 10th tells you everything. Possession has got us 4 points from 15. If that's not an argument for change then its only going to get worse.

20 Sep 2025 14:45:58
EHL - amazing what one win at Ibrox in X amount of years does to the ego of those Hearts players.

20 Sep 2025 17:23:39
How can we NOT be a possession team?

Sure in Europe maybe. But cmon!

It just needs moving faster, player in position, wingers being given the ball sooner and quicker and maybe even hitting the fricken by line!

It's not fricken hard.

20 Sep 2025 21:55:16
Under Gerrard we played majority possession style, using tiki taka, we drew opposing teams out to chase the ball, then moved the ball into open channels created, passed the ball quickly and precisely, tiring out our opponents and confusing the opposition defence on who was going to shoot utilising 2 false 9s and box overloads, hence his reams having an average 4 goals for and 1 goal against per match ratio, and us taking far higher quality teams on and skelping them more often than not.
Ther is a couple of vids on YT from his peak gers era explaining in more detail how his gers teams both tactically dominated and broke down opponents using his favoured christmas tree formation in a very fluid way.
We all know we witnessed it.

21 Sep 2025 18:48:17
Angus, I'd rather have Roy Rodger's.

22 Sep 2025 15:31:30
Need wingers to get to bye line, this right foot on the left and vice versa is not the way.

22 Sep 2025 18:08:53
His version of possession based slow across the middle of the pitch is easy for sides to set up against and defend . Got to be quicker and much sharper, got to take risks in forward positions .
