'Rangers began the summer window with a narrative that Scottish players who "get it" were required. This resulted in Rangers prioritising the wrong positions, neglecting priority positions, and simply recruiting players that lack the ability to help Rangers win the league. The best players often have good characters by default. What we needed and should have prioritised was players with proven ability'. - Something I read in the comments section of a podcast video by a fellow Rangers fan. Some of his comments seem to hit home.

Celtic don't seem to care about recruiting Scots or people who "get it". They are going after ability.

Don't think that's what was said at all, it was more along the lines of if everything else was equal, priority would be given to Scottish players or players who knew the league would be the selection process. i.e. only if they were as good as or better than other potential candidates for the same role/position.

My argument all along, RWC.
Quality should be the priority over Rangers minded, SPFL experienced, Scottish all day.

13 Aug 2026 08:54:38
Are you saying the club have purposely signed bad players just because they are Scottish or "get the league"?

Or have they bought players they thought would be good and it turns out they are wrong?

Think a lot of this lands at the coaching and the "system".

We have been through a load of managers and players and still the same old crap nearly every game.

Can we find better players than McCrorie and Devlin abroad?

McCrorie seems to have been signed as the starting RB. The Rangers review said that if Rangers target a RB, which is now happening, they have thrown the towel in on McCrorie. Has the singing of McCrorie for £1m improved this team, or should we have set out to get the best RB we can find from the outset? This new RB we sign will probably come from abroad, and the fact he won't be Scottish, or has never played in this league, won't bother anyone.

If you flip this on its head, Celtic haven't signed many Scots with experience in the SPFL this summer. Does this give Rangers a competitive advantage over Celtic for the season ahead?

We appeared to get off to a fast start on recruitment while other side kept hands in their pockets. They are now buying quality and we are floundering around. You couldn't make it up.

13 Aug 2026 09:16:59
They think we require players that know the league because they don't know the league. They don't understand what we need to win it or how to identify players with real quality and the robustness required.

If always considered players turn up here, and after one or two games get clattered, they soon realise the refs will not protect a Rangers player in the manner they do with other teams at times.

And then they hit the treatment table or down tools because they don't fancy it.

They think signing SPFL player mitigates that because they are already in the league. And for squad filler that's fine but not for the starting 11.

Celtic have Ralston, Forest, McGregor, McGowan, Tierney and a few other young Scots who have been in and around a winning Celtic team for yrs. They don't need anymore. They're buying proper quality. As much as their fans give them a hard time, they spend and keep fxxxxxx winning!

I keep seeing this argument being made,
But we've signed three players with SPFL experience. In the grand scheme of things, that's hardly a huge amount, especially when you look at the number of players we've brought in overall.

It's offset with Japanese, Serbian, Croatian, English, Australian although cannot is one of 3 with the SPFL experience.

And a South African.

And if we add in Couhaib Driouech, he's Dutch with Moroccan heritage I believe.

So just under one third of new signings have SPFL experience and only two of them are Scottish.

Can't really see this argument. 😅

McCrorie is the only Scottish player we've bought that people can have doubts about, Shankland was brought in because he's a proven goalscorer in the SPL and for a free Devlin was a no brainer! The other 6 we've brought in so far are from out with our league and should be given a fair crack of the whip to prove themselves. Who's to say they won't be quality signings. Celtic have just splashed out between 7/9mil (reports differ) on Hassan, a guy who had 2 decent World Cup games but has only scored 4 and assisted 6 in 80 matches the last 2 seasons for Oviedo.

🤷 Those stats are shocking! Driouech's stats are much better than Hassan's. Hogh is a goal scorer without doubt and Duran is still to prove himself. Mika Baur (the young German) they're apparently signing is the same age and price as Dragojevic but Dragojevic is more highly rated. Who's to say we won't still go out and buy some quality players, there's still a few weeks left of the window.

13 Aug 2026 09:53:02
Given Devlin was free and McCrorie a small fee, I don't have any issue with them as squad players. McCrorie may not be an upgrade, but he will be available every week, and can provide cover across LB, CB, RB, and DM, so is a smart signing.

I agree with mph and rwc. I don't care where players are from, we needed quality and we haven't got that as of yet. It's going to be a long season, make no mistake about it
Some won't like it, but Celtic are bringing in quality over quantity at the moment also. We are basically playing for 2nd.

13 Aug 2026 10:34:09
Geesa, that's exactly what was said, mate. Rwc is leaving that part out to suit a narrative.
"Only if they were considered as good as or better," so basically Rwc has come to the conclusion that the players we didn't sign from abroad would have been better than the Scottish based players we did sign. 😬

Antman
Cortes
Gassama
Olsen
Cornelius
Cifu
Matondo
Bajrami
Diomande
Nsiala
Lammers
Hagi
Danilo
Yilmaz etc etc etc.

All prove that buying abroad is so much better, the huge wages many of them were on were absurd. God forbid we try something different, not like we are throwing away a winning formula, is it?

13 Aug 2026 11:27:52
Boyblue, I could list a few failed Scottish & SPL proven players too. Some of those players had problems beside ability: Danilo, Hagi, Cortes & to some extent Antman were injured a lot. Danilo looked like he was finding form after an injury then got injured, Cortes looked sharp & a threat then got injured then injured age, Hagi I thought was solid but played out of position a lot & was injured a lot.

Even Cornelis was injured his entire time here, Yilmaz injured, but there was definitely a player there. Some of them sucked, sure, but Diomande for example is a victim of constant management change & changing how he plays.

13 Aug 2026 12:30:36
Djb, of course you could, my point is that foreign isn't the be all end all that sone think it is, mate, that's all.

13 Aug 2026 12:41:34
Yes, it's better, BB4, and to state otherwise is absolute lunacy, bud. Who exactly could we get from this league that would be an upgrade on who we have/had. This is a league many of us state isn't great, which it isn't, as we just saw the team who finished a close 2nd get pumped out of 2 euro ties with heavy defeats.

Our issue is scouting, and has been for some time. It's like we don't do enough homework on these lads before they sign. Now look at Celtic, they have signed what on paper looks like 3 quality players and it took them some time, but that's probably because they did their scouting correctly, unlike our scattergun approach.
