Probably because the number he is getting is already getting used, and that would give Rangers fans a clue to who is getting sold.

If we sell Connor Barron, and personally I wouldn't be in a hurry to sell him, then I think Cammy Devlin would get Barron's no.8 jersey if we do sell. ? ??

Only a number, but number 8, over the years, for me, is reserved more for the creative or skillful midfielder. I'd like it to go back to a traditional way for me personally.
