Interested to know the thoughts of those who said Shankland was never Rangers quality? Awful quiet these days when his name comes up .

09 May 2026 21:25:31
I'll pipe up. Don't think I ever said he wasn't Rangers quality. But I believe I did say at the time he was off a bad season and that we could find better. I've never doubted his scoring ability or ball playing ability.

Miovski has been nothing like the striker from Aberdeen, so that's been unfortunate.

Chermiti was always a gamble, and not seen enough of Naderi, but I've liked what I've seen of him.

Shankland has been back on form this season and, with hindsight of how our players performed, we made the wrong call. I will say, though, signing Shankland wouldn't have fixed the defensive frailties and midfield imbalance.

09 May 2026 21:29:22
It was a no brainer. At his price and experience. He waited. Call didn't come. I think it was a mistake not bringing him in.

09 May 2026 22:00:54
Yes, we could have got him free more than once. Would he have scored as many goals as Dessers, who, let's be honest, more than half of our support thought was rubbish?

09 May 2026 22:07:56
I said we needed better. But I would have taken him over Chermiti and Miovski.

His sitter in the 1st half tonight against Motherwell cost his team 3 points.

09 May 2026 22:09:26
Bang on with that Murph.

09 May 2026 22:30:22
I think we should have signed Shankland, not only does it strengthen Rangers, it would have weakened Hearts, a 6 pointer.

09 May 2026 22:30:32
Wasn't just us that never signed him, by the way, even on a free transfer every other team in the world gave him a miss. Last season he scored 9 goals in 43 games while Dessers scored 29 goals in 55 games, yet many deemed him not good enough.

09 May 2026 22:31:05
It was a shocking decision not to sign him. Even if we thought he was a back up. He's a great striker, a real captain, and a leader.

09 May 2026 22:33:24
Stor. How many sitters Chermiti has not scored. 109% for Shankland and McInnes, but hey ho. More mistakes from our club and loads of posters.

09 May 2026 22:56:33
Shankland is the best striker in the league and it's not even close.
However, he has around 10yrs on Chermiti, who has an X factor. For example, the overhead kick volley against Celtic.
Let's remember how young the guys and give him time. What was Shankland up to at his age?

09 May 2026 23:07:21
Souness, Shankland was playing lower leagues in Scotland at 21 year old, Chermiti will have a far better career as well, but Shankland should have been signed.

09 May 2026 23:37:36
I thought we should have picked him up when he was doing the business in the lower leagues. But people said we had been burned by Nicky Clarke (and we were, to an extent), so they didn't take his goals seriously. Later, I thought Miovski was a better player than Shankland. Miovski was doing the business for Aberdeen and was being labelled as an EPL level player. He was scoring against Celtic and Hearts. Plus, Miovski is several years younger and offers up some resale value.

Shankland had a poor season last year. So I can see why the club went after Miovski instead. Who would have thought Miovski would come here and end up a shadow of the player he was.

Is the jersey too heavy? Maybe. Maybe Shankland wouldn't be able to handle it here either. The pressure and level of criticism in this country is insane.

I was reading about Dessers tonight. 52 goals in 100 games. Fantastic striker for us. But I remember him being criticised on The Rangers Review for "not scoring enough first goals". This wasn't just some nutcase on a fans' forum. This is so-called journalists. It's not enough to score a lot of goals, a certain portion of them needs to be the first goal of the game? I've never heard that in my life. How many of Larsson or Boyd were the first of the match? Does anyone even care? Sometimes the rage is simply manufactured.

Blue 89, Souness, can any of u say why?
The following said not good enough, not just fans on here.

Warburton
Murky
Gerrard
Mark Allen
Ross Wilson
Bronckhurst
Bisgrove
Beale
Clement
Koppen
Thelwell
Martin
Multiple East End managers, Championship managers and many more have not tried to sign him. Keep wondering why.

Jesus wept, can we please stop with the "our strikers miss chances" and Shankland is clinical nonsense please.

If anyone seen that game the night, he missed an absolute sitter that any of our players would have been slaughtered for.

It is what it is and we don't have him and we move on!

10 May 2026 00:46:22
We can point to every top striker in the world who's missed a sitter and cost their team three points. He deserved a chance. It was up to the club to offer support and sort out a contract.

10 May 2026 00:56:44
My star, you're wrong, and how can you say that for Shankland and Chermiti. Jamie Vardy springs to mind. EPL winner.

10 May 2026 01:19:05
Davie, wrong about what? Shankland was playing lower leagues in Scotland at Chermiti's age, even when a few years older than him.

10 May 2026 01:27:06
You must be talking about having a better career than Davie, it's not even close, in my eyes, who'll have a better career, Chermiti's ability as a footballer is far superior to Shankland's.

10 May 2026 01:31:27
Jamie Vardy was playing non league football in his mid 20s. It matters not a jot. Ngolo Kante and matter also were French League 2.

10 May 2026 02:13:20
Stevie, just clicked on what Davie was meaning, mate.

10 May 2026 02:24:18
The mad thing is Shankland was POTY, isn't top scorer, and as bbj pointed out, he's also missing sitters. He's a good player, but this conversation isn't happening if Rangers are top or Hearts are 3rd/4th.

The main issue Rangers have right now in my opinion is not goal scoring.

It's chance creation, defensive solidity and match control. That's before even looking at work ethic, fitness, etc. We had 14 goals in 3 games prior to the last 2, and scored 3 in the last 2. The issue isn't goals, but Shankland would fix the other issues as well, eh.

10 May 2026 06:51:41
John - No matter what your list says - although I do like Murky. ? Also, Martin is not a great addition to give backing re your criteria IMO, as he couldn't see a player if one came up and kicked him in the goolies. I don't believe there is anything more sinister to not signing him other than the Scottish Premier League snobbery that our club (and many other clubs) seem to have had around signing players from the league - either ones at top of their game are deemed not good enough, or their price is too high, and we baulk at spending locally, and many have gone on to start promising careers abroad.

Shankland would have been a great squad option for free of that there is no doubt - considering the vast amounts of cash we have spent on supposed free scoring/forwards over last 2-3 seasons. PS that is not Scottish bias being shown btw for all the Wokers/easily offended out there - I would still have wanted Shankland as squad player at that time had his name been El Shanklandini. ??
