A question i'll throw out to one and all ? We're heavily linked again with northern ireland and sheffield wednesday goalkeeper pierce charles ? We already have a very highly rated young northern irish goalkeeper mason munn, who's currently out on loan with neil lennon's Dunfermline ?Both munn and charles are only 20 years old and both are tipped to have very good careers in front of them ? My question to one and all is from munn and charles, which of these 2 young goalies do you rate the better and which one do you think has the potential/ability to take over eventually from Butland, as the new Rangers no.1???

02 Apr 2026 09:02:53
Charles, sws, Charles would have Butland's jersey off his back in zip time, mate.

02 Apr 2026 09:33:00
Mason Munn is at Forfar Athletic in League 2. ?

02 Apr 2026 09:34:15
At their age neither will take over from Butland. Munn has played about 10 first team games at a low level.

Charles has 30 games at a low level.

02 Apr 2026 09:48:07
Charles has ten games at international level, Munn has one for the under 21's, same country.
Is the Championship a low level, John?

02 Apr 2026 10:30:03
John also states, My star, that Pierce Charles has major issues with his shoulder and is why Man City let him go. ? He's also had several ops on his shoulder, which John also pointed out, mate. ? So John, who do you think should take over eventually from Butland as his long term replacement? ?

02 Apr 2026 10:31:29
My star, just a wee question for you here, mate. ? Regarding the shoulder issues that Pierce Charles has, would you still want Rangers to sign him, mate? ?

02 Apr 2026 10:44:52
Sws, had an injury on both shoulders, could be growth, hundred percent yes. Main thing is does Rohl want him, you'd be impressed with him, mate, he has a better range of passing than some cm's, but a very good all round young keeper.

02 Apr 2026 11:31:01
If Munn is highly rated, I would rather give him a chance than spend money on another highly rated keeper.
Let's be giving our talented youngsters a pathway to the 1st team.

02 Apr 2026 11:48:58
Exactly tattie. No wonder none of these youngsters want to come.

02 Apr 2026 11:55:06
Correct Mph.

Gk has a great range of passing? I want to know if he can catch the ball, as that's more important. Not seen a lot of either, so no idea who will be better in the long run. But there is no keeper coming in at 20, at taking the gloves off Butland, that we would be able to buy.

02 Apr 2026 12:00:52
Exactly ph. My point is his injury record and lack of appearances

Wednesday rejected five million in January for him from West Ham storm.

02 Apr 2026 12:02:49
Should always be looking for better, and Charles is better than Munn, he'd cost pennies right now.

02 Apr 2026 12:11:39
If West Ham had £5million turned down for Charles from Sheff Wednesday in January, My star, he may cost us a few million pounds if we're trying to sign him mate. ?

02 Apr 2026 12:28:20
Great point, as u say buy better, so let's also buy better than Charles. We r active in Germany and Scandinavia, East Europe scouting goalies.

02 Apr 2026 12:30:03
Why I said a very good all round keeper, but superb with the ball at his feet, he'll not take Butland jersey from someone that has never seen much of him, cool story.
Sws, He wouldn't cost nearly 5m, mate.

Last summer he about signed for Strasbourg for around 1m, when he was still contracted for a couple of years, he'll only have one year in the summer.

02 Apr 2026 12:36:50
At this moment you would have to say that Charles is better than Munn because he has had a chance at senior level after leaving City. Munn is taking a different route, but we need to be patient and develop the boy. He looked to have all the assets required at youth level, so let's give him a chance to grow. If we were to allow Munn to leave, like City did with Charles, and he becomes a great keeper, we would all rightly be critical of the club.

We have a top class keeper in Butland and two potentially great youngsters, so the question is, is Kelly what we need as No 2 keeper or do we need to upgrade this position, and would Charles settle for that role.

02 Apr 2026 12:37:47
Better than Charles at 20-year-old, John, we should be all over them then, but what happens if Rohl and our keeper coach want him signed?

02 Apr 2026 13:15:20
He's a goalie that could be our team for years and years to come, which could save us millions in the long run.

02 Apr 2026 13:44:44
We're definitely getting a new number 1 this summer.
Guarantee it.

02 Apr 2026 14:00:48
My star, I get it. Has to demonstrate he's better than what we have and try be fit occasionally.

02 Apr 2026 14:06:23
Tjark Ernst or Dennis Seimen for me.

2 outstanding goalkeepers who far exceed the current ability of both.

02 Apr 2026 14:13:33
John, he's had only two injuries. We can't be writing players off with a couple of injuries, or we wouldn't be signing any players, like the rest of clubs. Hopefully it's growth, but he's still a very good young keeper.

02 Apr 2026 14:16:15
And how many times you seen Charles play for having that opinion, Aphelion? Would either have performed as well against Italy?

02 Apr 2026 14:42:37
I have only seen Charles play around a dozen times, my Star.

No matter what, I have formed the opinion that both keepers I mentioned exceed the ability of both mentioned in the original post.

I am allowed an opinion after all.

02 Apr 2026 14:53:23
Yes, you are, Aphelion, but are both of them being described as a special talent?

02 Apr 2026 15:01:17
To answer your question, simply, yes, they are. Although the benchmark is quite a bit higher.

Who has Charles got to compete against?

Both I mentioned are, unfortunately, competing with:

Manuel Neuer
Marc-Andre Ter Stegen
Oliver Baumann
Jonas Urbig
Alexander Nubel
Noah Atobolu.

02 Apr 2026 15:11:58
Aphelion, I know nothing about them, but I do know Charles is rated extremely highly, and because he's had a couple of shoulder injuries it seems that's too many. Hopefully it's only growth, but bet none of them are better with the ball though.
You talking about club or Country?

02 Apr 2026 15:19:33
Country star. But I have seen Ernst play for Hertha on more than 50 occasions and can confirm that he is equally adept at playing the ball with his feet as he is at shotstopping.

Widen your knowledge, my friend, and don't just blindly back something.

I do not want to get in a back and forth debate about opinions.

You have yours, I disagree. That is perfectly allowed.

02 Apr 2026 15:30:31
I'm blindly backing nothing, Aphelion, and where are you getting that from, mate? I just know how good Charles is right now with outstanding potential.

02 Apr 2026 15:35:43
You are "betting" he is better than players you openly stated you know nothing about.

If that is not backing blindly, then I really do not know how to ever have a conversation with you.

02 Apr 2026 15:37:42
Aphelion, I'm only saying I'd bet Charles is better with the ball at his feet, better range of passing than some midfielders, especially ours.

02 Apr 2026 15:46:37
Aphelion, I told you I have never seen them play, but Pierce Charles has all my backing.
I said I would bet he's better with the ball at his feet, as I've never seen many keepers better in all my days.

02 Apr 2026 15:50:24
Well, I disagree with you. I am entitled to that.

I am also entitled to have an opinion that you are blindly backing someone over people you have no knowledge of.

02 Apr 2026 15:58:37
Cool, Aphelion, so they will be better with the ball at their feet, then. ??

02 Apr 2026 16:00:46
My star, u say two, I disagree.

02 Apr 2026 16:02:25
Aphe, in fairness, Charles has 65% paying usucess.

02 Apr 2026 16:02:56
That is my opinion.

02 Apr 2026 16:04:33
Actually, videos about how good Pierce Charles is with the ball.

02 Apr 2026 16:06:14
John, there is no point.

We obviously do not know what we are talking about.

02 Apr 2026 16:13:19
Yes, John, that is good stats, but I will compare it to Tjark Ernst with 74.6% passing success rate.

Once again, opinion doesn't meet facts.

02 Apr 2026 16:15:33
John, I said two? He certainly hasn't had five like you posted, two shoulder injuries, both sides.

02 Apr 2026 16:20:10
Not for a second am I doubting you, Aphelion, and your knowledge of the 2 goalkeepers you mention as talented keepers, but I honestly don't know the 2 you mention. ? But I do know Pierce Charles, and he's an extremely talented goalkeeper who's got a big career in front of him imo, mate. ? He's also very highly regarded among a lot of football coaches. ? I also don't care if he's only 20 years old; if Danny Rohl and Bibo, our goalkeeping coach, want Charles and rate him highly, as both clearly do, then that will do for me and he could well be our long-term replacement for Jack Butland.

? I noticed Thestigno1 further up the page saying he knows for a fact that Jack Butland won't be our no.1 for next season. ? Thestigno1, I take it you have this on good authority, my friend. ?

02 Apr 2026 16:26:23
Aphelion, give it a break, man, because I said I'd bet him being better with the ball, fgs man. ?

02 Apr 2026 16:37:42
It's like one flew over the cuckoo's nest in here at times. ?

02 Apr 2026 16:41:06
Aph - Tjark Ernst has been posted on numerous occasions by yourself, which is great, but is dr remotely interested in signing this gk?

02 Apr 2026 17:43:58
Angus, if you saw Charles with the ball at his feet you'd understand he's far better than Butland. It's not even close.

02 Apr 2026 17:47:32
Copland, I do not speak for Danny Rohl. Can you tell me with 100% certainty that he remotely wants to sign Charles?

02 Apr 2026 16:52:15
Star, your shoulders are fully developed as a male between ages of 16 to 18 so doubt it is still growing problems. Unless he has a development problem from that age. He has only played 13 times this season because of these issues, so it would be a huge risk to buy him with that recent history.

Just one question: why does a GK who is great with the ball at his feet have a successful pass rate of less than 60%? Butland is better than that.

02 Apr 2026 16:55:58
Correct again, Angus.

02 Apr 2026 16:58:07
Aph, it appears a few don't know the rules clubs need to abide by re a player who is under 18.

02 Apr 2026 18:05:47
We would get him for pennies and we'd knock back 5 million ? That's not pennies. I haven't seen much of either. I've seen a little bit more of Charles and was impressed. Love that you would bet him having better passing stats and getting proved wrong Again.

02 Apr 2026 18:23:03
Storm, you really haven't got much of a clue, man. Charles is superb with the ball at his feet, one of the best I've seen in 55 years, but you'll know better, and where is this 5m coming from? Around 1m last summer about took him to France.

And do you know it wasn't growth? His first shoulder was at 18 year
old, so he can't be a later developer because you think not, lol man. ?

Does a better passing range mean you can't be far better with the ball at your feet like?
Heard it all now.

02 Apr 2026 18:39:31
And there you are again.

Trying to ridicule someone for being correct.

02 Apr 2026 19:29:46
My star, the £5million came from John regarding Pierce Charles, mate, as he stated West Ham were knocked back for the tune of £5million when they made enquiries to sign him in January, so John can answer the £5million he said West Ham had bid for Charles and was knocked back. ?

02 Apr 2026 19:49:37
Sws, must have missed that, Charles will be around 1m imo.

02 Apr 2026 20:18:26
Star, I don't care what he looks like with the ball at his feet. It is what he does with it when it leaves his feet that I am concerned about. And, over 40% of the time he gets rid of it, he fails to find a player from his team.

That isn't good with his feet (changed how I said it), imo. You can argue about aesthetics all day, but he can't pass a ball better than Jack Butland and fans moan about him.

02 Apr 2026 21:04:49
Aph - all speculation who we are going to sign, but Charles is probably linked to us as he played under DR at Sheffield Wednesday.
Like your stats post on Charles and Ernst, so it will be interesting to see if we sign a GK in the next transfer window.
