Looks like Kelly may sign extension
24 Feb 2026 12:07:07
Would that affect our decision to sign a new No 1?
24 Feb 2026 12:35:08
Good back up option, imo, and after Sunday's heroics I wouldn't mind the lad Prior from Livi as an option as number 2 or 3.
24 Feb 2026 13:02:50
John, part of me wishes we got a different backup to push Butland a bit harder. However, he doesn't let us down really when called upon, so it's a difficult one.
24 Feb 2026 13:15:05
Why would Prior, a no.1 keeper in the SPL, sign as a 2nd or 3rd choice? I'm sure the wages would reflect 2nd or 3rd choice, & his backside would be sore sitting on a bench every week.
Maybe just me, but I think he might be happy playing week in week out.
24 Feb 2026 13:23:06
I'd prefer another keeper be signed who can fight with Butland for the first eleven.
24 Feb 2026 13:40:01
I'm more than ok with Kelly signing because of the club-trained thing. Let's face it, any other keeper we got who could compete with Butland would likely be a foreign keeper.
24 Feb 2026 13:47:12
Bar, Kelly has done exactly that, mate.
24 Feb 2026 14:37:31
The issue we have is Europe. Hence, we prefer Scottish-trained, i.e., Kelly is ideal.
Prior gets paid less than half of what we pay Kelly.
24 Feb 2026 14:38:30
Bunsster, why would u replace Butland.
24 Feb 2026 14:45:35
Kelly is both Scottish and trained by the club. That makes him particularly valuable to Rangers when it comes to European squads. He'll be staying for many years to come.
24 Feb 2026 14:58:13
It makes sense, Kelly as a backup, with him being Scottish. I'd still prefer a keeper signed that challenges Butland for the number one.
24 Feb 2026 15:00:33
Kelly would likely be no1 keeper for every other team in Scotland.
The lad for Motherwell seems good as well, tbf.
So we basically have the best 2 keepers in the country.
24 Feb 2026 15:18:01
You're never, ever going to keep two top goalies happy. There is nothing wrong with Kelly as backup. He's nothing special, but he does the job, and is clearly a good pro who understands his role.
24 Feb 2026 15:19:13
Rohl's nationality has nothing to do with it.
24 Feb 2026 15:27:51
I'm perfectly happy with Kelly as backup. He has rarely let us down when called on, is Scottish-trained, loves the club, and has a great attitude. No-brainer.
24 Feb 2026 15:44:02
GS1990, Prior apparently has had a very poor season, but played out of his skin against us. Livingstone has conceded 58 goals in the league this season.
24 Feb 2026 15:47:44
Prior would be a great buy, but I like Kelly as well. He keeps the Scottish quota as has been mentioned.
24 Feb 2026 16:01:18
Do we think Kelly may get the cup game against them or will Butland be between the sticks? I always like my no2 to get some game time, just in case he is called upon.
24 Feb 2026 16:06:05
John, I'm not sure I would replace Butland. I remember reading trusted posters on here not so long ago, adamant we were signing a gk for the summer who would be new number 1. He could have come in January if Kelly moved. Was wondering if the gk in the queue was still signing.
24 Feb 2026 16:23:04
Butland has a brain-fart every other month, as does Tav & Souttar.
Together, they cost us at least 6 goals (probably more) per season.
Time to replace them.
All 3 have been good servants to the club, and I wouldn't be against them staying as squad players.
24 Feb 2026 16:40:23
For me, Kelly is perfect, good keeper to come in if needed.
24 Feb 2026 16:47:29
Can't go signing a man after probably his best performance.
24 Feb 2026 17:26:12
We do need better than Butland.
24 Feb 2026 17:53:01
Prior would be a great buy because of the 1 time you guys have watched him. Screw your heads on, man.
24 Feb 2026 19:57:05
The Foolmonty
Six goals!!?
He's saved us at least 6 games, at least 8 points!!!!!
Stick to computer games.
24 Feb 2026 22:26:52
John, I totally agree, and I don't get why people don't rate Kelly and then post like the Livi keeper based on one game, when Kelly was Motherwell Player of the Year.
24 Feb 2026 22:28:36
GDog, I said Butland, Tav & Souttar cost us at least 6 goals per season. Also to say Butland had saved us at least 6 games works out, by your maths, 8 points
And what has computer games got to do with what I said?
25 Feb 2026 09:03:31
For me, Kelly is a solid backup. Butland saves more points than he costs. He is a really good keeper when on his game, but he is prone to a blunder.
25 Feb 2026 11:20:33
Thanks for the reply, Bunster. There is significant interest in a goalkeeper
To replace Butland.
Would be a free summer 27.
Butland has fewer blunders than McGregor did, imo.
25 Feb 2026 11:22:11
It was only a few weeks ago that Shamal was the best keeper in Scotland.
25 Feb 2026 13:03:57
The current top gk is Calum Ward of Motherwell, with 15 clean sheets.
Then Schmeichel.
Butland is ranked 3rd in the SPFL with 11 clean sheets, and is ranked 3rd for shots saved.
Allan McGregor, at Butland's current age, was a far better keeper for us in all competitions.
During one season in Gerrard's era, he was one of the top-performing keepers in all of Europe, statistically, as well as the top gk in the Europa League, something Butland has never done at any club.
25 Feb 2026 13:08:02
I think some people forget that the players are human. Mistakes are inevitable. If it wasn't for Butland this year, we wouldn't be where we are, imo. He's kept us in games that we might've lost otherwise. People are expecting perfection.
25 Feb 2026 16:32:32
Laudrup having the most clean sheets does not make u the best goalkeeper in the league.
25 Feb 2026 16:39:24
People suggesting to sign Prior need to give their heads a shake.
He had the game of his life against us, but the remainder of the season has conceded enough goals for Livingston to be stranded at the bottom of the league. Absolute nonsense.
25 Feb 2026 20:51:43
Laudrup Butland is 32 and McGregor is currently 44. When he was the same age as Butland, he wasn't playing for us, so how was he a far better keeper for us in all competitions? ?
26 Feb 2026 02:42:29
That may be true, John, but McGregor had more world class saves than Butland.
