If social media is something that affects you as a player ( or anyone for that matter) then don't be on it. They are making a conscious choice to sign up to something knowing it involves the trolls and worst parts of society.
I know some use it to build their profile but that's a choice. If it affects your life or performances just come off it.

Kaiser there's a story on the BBC website today about an English referee and the abuse he and his family received after he made a VAR mistake. It's well worth a read, particularly as it explains how deeply it affected both him and his family, despite him not even being on social media.
I think the problem is that none of us really knows what it's like to be a footballer in the modern game. We can be quick to dismiss the impact of criticism and abuse, perhaps because we assume that earning large amounts of money and choosing football as a career somehow makes players immune to the pressures and issues that the rest of us face.
But they are still human beings, with families, feelings and the same vulnerabilities as anyone else. A footballer's salary doesn't make them immune to that.

Yes I read that mate. Difference was that was things happening in person with photographers and people going to their school which is disgusting but sadly isn't a modern problem either with paperazzi and morons in the street.
What I was speaking about is something u can have a control over if its affecting u.

if the guy wasn't on social media then likely the abusers would have taken to the streets to abuse him, they don't stop just because someone isn't on social media.

Can't see anything wrong with that, Kaiser moved it into in person, I comment on a real situation that impacts parents and family by the guys actions, that's abuse, have you ever lost a child to cancer, its devastating, thought this medium was about expression of feeling on any given topic that's being discussed, if commenting on real world experience of a difficult situation is held, then what's the point.
Sorry if I'm overstepping, but this is close to home for me.

It's not just social media where abuse is thrown about, look at that idiot guy who taunted the supporters with the picture of that wee soul Bradley Lowery, how must his family feel seeing that carry on, total and utter rat, hope they bang him up.

Kaiser, social media has become a breeding ground for negativity and ill-feeling among supporters. People read repeated criticism and negative comments about a player online, then turn up at the ground with an opinion already formed and a degree of resentment towards him. When that player makes a mistake or something goes wrong, they're already primed to react more harshly than they otherwise might.
A player can choose to avoid social media, but supporters can't avoid the influence it has on them. They are still exposed to that negativity, and it inevitably shapes the atmosphere and influences how they react to players at the ground.
Take Manni as an example. Yes, he makes mistakes, but is he really as bad as some people make him out to be? Or have we reached the point where every mistake is magnified, while anything positive he does is overlooked? Even pundits are beginning to recognise this, with his errors seemingly singled out and highlighted because of the reputation that has developed around him.
I think that's the danger of allowing online opinion to shape our judgement before we've even watched a player perform. Once that perception takes hold, it's very difficult for the player to win some supporters back, regardless of what he does.

Okay not using social media, but you think a player not using it won't hear from others what's getting said on it?

Fair point Fork, and I'm in no way ever condoning abuse or minimising the effects especially at a personal level. It's disgusting. Was making a distinction between what happens online where u can try and avoid it and in person.
However I do also agree far greater protection and action should also be taken re online abuse etc which I why I chose not to be on it and try and keep my family from it.
Im not saying it solves everything but why do players chose to be on it when we all know what goes on it, if it affects them.

So does a player have to tell all their family and loved ones not to use social media also.
What about the pundits that are over critical.
Do they have to avoid the pundits and press also.
What about when they go to the shops with family and bump into some idiots.
Should they live their lives with their heads in the clouds just ignoring all around them.
I wish life was as simple for those guys as choosing not to go on social media.
It's a real problem they have to deal with.
The cats out the bag now with social media and it's difficult to avoid it as it's in every day life.

Nobody ever really knows what's going on in someone's mind and how it effects their performance whether in a normal job or indeed as a footballer, everyone always has something occupying their mind or some family drama. I came off mainstream social media years ago due to the fact I didn't like the way people were abusing others and I felt I didn't need it in my life best thing I ever did.
Most human beings will inevitably react badly to abuse however others can brush it off but in no way does it make them any less deserving of a Rangers shirt either way.

Maybe I never put it correctly. i'm not in any way suggesting u can avoid all the impact of social media but why sign up to it when u know what goes on there if it affects u? Do what u can to protect yourself from it.
Angus mate I never needed others to shape my judgment to think Manny is poor while socal media folk said he was a £30m player going to Arsenal or Dortmund. 😜.

Absolutely agree Kaiser. Social media if a player chooses to go on it is a recipe for disaster. Being in the public eye they leav themselves open to everything 👍🏻.

Kaiser, there's a difference between saying a player isn't worth £30m and suggesting he's completely useless. He's neither. But your example actually illustrates my point. One person makes a comment about his value, others pick it up and, before long, it becomes an accepted opinion among a wider group of supporters. It doesn't need to be everyone; just enough people repeating it for that perception to take hold. That's how social media can influence the way people think about a player.
The opposite can happen too. Take Min Su as an example. If the general opinion on social media is that he's doing well, supporters can become more forgiving of his mistakes. Even when he made the error that directly led to the second goal vs Hearts, it was overlooked or played down because it doesn't fit the existing positive narrative.
My point isn't really about the abuse players receive directly on social media. It's more about the knock-on effect of what supporters read and how it shapes their opinions before they even get to the game. When that player then makes a mistake or does something they feel he shouldn't have, their reaction can be influenced by the negative perception they've already developed.
So that's really my point. Social media doesn't just influence how we talk about players; it can influence what we actually see when we watch them play. When that player then makes a mistake or does something they feel he shouldn't have, their reaction can be influenced by the negative perception they've already developed.

Always be negative stuff on social media even if you are Harry Kane , it's being able to ignore it and some will never be able to do it , back in day a lot of players never looked at papers and that was just negative stuff from journalists never mind fans , the bigger the club the bigger the abuse but on the other hand the greater the praise , every walk of life has it at some degree.

Whether we like it or not, social media in all its guises is here to stay - warts and all.
Now, as individuals, we can set our own limits to how we use it. When we use it and what we use it for.
Rangers Rumours is a form of "social media".
Thankfully we have Eds who police it well and don't stand for any of the bull that other similar sites allow.

Sadly true coopersdad it's not just a Scottish football problem. Look at the abuse arguably the second greatest player gets in Ronaldo. Happens all over the globe on social media. I'd actually say it's less of an issue here than it is in Africa and Asia where the abuse these guys give players is ridiculous.
We are lucky we don't have a lot of these people supporting our club but English football is plagued with it. Most of the racist messages online for English premier
Players actually comes from accounts in Africa and Asia.

Social media isn't just a hobby for modern athletes it's a required tool for their career, branding, and sponsorship obligations.
Furthermore, choosing to use a public platform does not mean someone is consenting to abuse, racism, or harassment.
The responsibility should always be on holding trolls accountable and demanding better platform moderation, not forcing the victims of abuse into professional and social isolation.

As people say this site is well run by the eds, so unlikely to get over the top abuse on here, this is only social media site I use.
But other sites have to take more responsibility for what is being posted.
I know people will here from other sources, but why put yourself through a lot of it by being on these platforms?

As wish says EHL a lot of racist abuse actually comes from over seas , anything in these shores is usually taken care of by the police , if the abuse is fans calling you crap then they have to just scroll bye it and try to not let it get to you , every player will get it to some degree and those using social media will see it more.
