After seeing pep guardiola's last pre match press conference regarding confirming he's leaving as man city manager after their last league game on sunday at home to villa it got me thinking about an honourable thing our club should have done many years ago ?City have already confirmed/put in place a renaming of one of their stands at the Etihad which will happen on sunday, in honour of their departing legendary manager pep guardiola and the stand will now be renamed "THE PEP GUARDIOLA STAND" ? That's the outstanding way you treat your legendary manager ?I've said many times before and i'll say it again WHY i think our club should have absolutely honoured our legendary/most successful manager of the modern era in the same way when he retired all those years ago ☹️We as a club imo absolutely should have honoured the late, great walter smith in this same way by renaming the copland road stand ie."THE WALTER SMITH COPLAND ROAD STAND" once walter retired, so walter and all his family and friends would be present when receiving this honour from our club for what he done and achieved for Glasgow Rangers ?It always has/still angers me so much, that this wasn't done for the legendary walter smith ?

22 May 2026 15:07:01
Only thing I would say is, what if this wasn't what Walter Smith wanted.

22 May 2026 15:19:35
My cousin and his ex wife actually stayed beside Walter and Ethel for a time, and I've met both Walter and his wife Ethel on a good few occasions when down visiting my cousin many years ago now. I also know one of Walter's sons, Steven. ? So EHL, to answer your question, as honestly as I can from what I know about Walter, I would think he'd have been humble if asked about a possible stand being named after him, but imo he would have been extremely honoured if our club had just gone ahead and honoured him in this way.

? ?? I still think our club should do it now and honour the late, great Walter Smith in this way, EHL. ?

22 May 2026 15:35:21
Interesting.

I always thought that we'd proposed a significant gesture that Walter himself declined.

22 May 2026 15:56:47
EHL on the button. He declined a previous offer, as he felt there were too many deserving of that tribute, not least of all Davy Cooper.

22 May 2026 15:58:02
Ehl, imo you're correct.

22 May 2026 16:02:04
Yeah, I always heard that he felt those who pulled on the jersey were more deserving of the tributes.

Which, I guess, is no surprise, as he was one hell of a man.

22 May 2026 16:02:42
I definitely don't doubt both you guys, Ehl and John, but to my knowledge Walter wasn't offered the honour of a stand being named after him. ?

22 May 2026 16:57:06
Ask Steven and let us know, Coops. ?

22 May 2026 17:54:40
Walter, so our ex manager is telling lies. The man I know was not like that. He was very humble.

22 May 2026 17:56:47
I would, Scotty, but I haven't seen Steven for a good number of years now, mate. ? I honestly don't know if he'd say anyway, tbh, I don't think I'd ask him that, mate. ?

22 May 2026 18:08:06
He's got a well deserved statue already, mate.

22 May 2026 18:10:55
The man would've been befitting of having Ibrox named after him. What John and Ehl have outlined is what I would expect from the man and how people have always portrayed him, very humble.

I love his statue at Ibrox. Only had the pleasure of meeting him once very briefly. Wish we had him around now to be a voice in the room with the new owners and around the club. God bless you, Sir Walter.

22 May 2026 18:29:24
Cooper, good post, he was in the top 3 of men ever involved in our club.

Bill Struth
Willie Waddle
Walter Smith

I remember being a very young child and meeting Mr Struth with my dad, he gave me a coin re Rangers I still have it. My dad said he was God.

22 May 2026 18:36:54
John, why do you take out of everything I post the bad, mate. ? As far as I know, Walter was never asked. I'm not stating you or Ehl are wrong or telling lies. ? You need to give this a by, mate. I'm fed up with it tbh. ?

22 May 2026 18:54:43
How am I taking something out of it? As far as I know, straight from him he was.
I was a very close friend with him.
Makes no difference now. The great man is gone.

I keep telling u, block me. If you post something totally wrong, imo, I'm going to post what I know.

22 May 2026 19:07:26
I'll tell you what you're doing wrong, John, as you're letting it go over your head. ? You're insinuating that I'm saying Walter Smith is telling lies. ? That's what you posted! Regarding Wullie Waddle, he was my granny's second cousin and was from the forth, I take it you don't believe that either. ?

22 May 2026 19:09:24
I don't block anyone, John. ? But you absolutely call me out for most things, but there's one thing I'm not, a liar. ?

22 May 2026 19:38:54
Walter Smith's name is synonymous with our club. He needs no fanfare to be remembered.

22 May 2026 20:00:44
Walter, dry your eyes, it's ok for you to call me petty names, but u don't like it back. I stayed next door to Waddell in Hyndland. Small world.

At no time do I state you're telling lies.

22 May 2026 20:26:00
John, that's an incredible story about meeting Bill Struth. If you've posted that before, I have missed it. Thanks for sharing. Would love to have met all those 3 and spent a little bit of time in their company.

22 May 2026 20:45:59
Coopers, no, I've never said it on here before. My aunt was Waddell's cleaner when he lived beside Hyndland Road.

I was very fortunate to spend time with Waddell and Smith. Many a dinner, wine, spirit shared.

22 May 2026 21:27:25
Amazing John, nothing else for it, I'll need to meet you one day to hear more instead!

22 May 2026 21:52:10
Coopers, I actually don't share many personal stories. Ceryaiynot on social media.
If u like a drink, u would have loved to listen to Baxter. He was legendary, and lock ins on a Saturday were something else.

23 May 2026 01:02:26
And for what it's worth

Auchenhowie, across from my home, should be named after Walter,

23 May 2026 15:46:04
Calm down lads.

Walter has said himself that he declined the offer of a stand being named after him. I'm sure of that.

If that's wrong, then it was the statue that he declined.

Absolutely he declined to have a permanent honour in his name. That's a fact.
