Gerrard signed the following players permanently:

Murphy, Katic, Flannigan, Lafferty, Grezda, McAuley, Polster, Hastie, Jones, Stewart, Edmundson, Barker and Itten.
13 players who played no part in winning the title. 13 players who were also moved on by Gerrard.

He also signed the following players permanently:

Goldson, Kent, Davis, Barisic, Kamara, Hagi, Aribo, Arfield, McGregor, Helander, Roofe, Balogun, Defoe, McLaughlin, Wright, Bassey, Simpson and Firth.
18 players who were signed over the first 3 years of his tenure and who all played a part in winning the title.

At the start of his 4th season, he also signed Ofoborh, Sakala, Lundstram and Bacuna. One who never played a game for Rangers and one who lasted 6 months.
All of the above don't count the many players signed on loan.

So why is it OK for Gerrard to build a title winning team over 3 seasons but Rohl has to not only get a tune out of Martin's flops but also turn them into title winners? There is not a player in Martin's squad that hasn't been vilified at some point during the season.

Has Rohl made errors? Yes.
Did Gerrard make errors? Yes.

Some go on about the value of the current squad and what was spent. We have an £8 million striker scoring less than our much-maligned striker from last season.

We have a couple of wingers at £5 million who are very inconsistent. Another on loan who's apparently worth £8 million but who's confidence is shot to feck.
We have another striker, proclaimed the best finisher at the club who looks a man short at times.

Throw in Aasgaard. We had an obligation on a winger for £4.5 million who went straight out on loan. Of Rohl's signings, I have high hopes for Naderi and Rommens. But the jury is out on Chukwuani who I think has something but looks naïve at times.

Does the end of season capitulation give us concerns? Of course. But I see enough in what Rohl has done since taking over from Martin to think he should be given time.

In Rohl We Trust.

Mph, I will say the value of a player doesn't determine output so you are right to highlight that. I'm very much in the keep Rohl camp, but I will say the squad Gerrard inherited was much poorer than the one Rohl inherited and, as has been established multiple times this season, the money we spent this season has been poorly spent in the majority and 6 loans, mostly defensive, was a shocking call.

On the January trend, I expect much better next window and I believe Rohl, with a preseason, will dominate the SPFL. Celtic have a major rebuild and Hearts players have had their best season ever at the same time as Rangers, and Celtic have capitulated.

Findlay, Halkett, Devlin, Baningame, etc. have never played this well in a season. I don't expect the same next season, especially with Europe added into the mix.

Motherwell's squad and manager will be pulled apart.

I expect us to win under Rohl next season and here the main thing that gives me hope.

Points in the last 27 games (Rohl's tenure)
Rangers 60
Celtic 56
Hearts 54

Our fitness will be higher under Rohl next season as it's a high intensity approach rather than a possession approach and the squad will be shaped to play that style. I also expect major flaws to be addressed, like no natural tempo setter and no natural creators.

Gerrard didn't have to work with the squad he inherited, though, Ayrshire. It was preseason and he was able to totally change it, signing something like 20 players. And I still feel he started with a lot of players better than this squad. A bit different from what Rohl had to do with what he inherited. He deserves the same time and backing Gerrard got.

100% Kaiser. I think Danny is a superior coach to Gerrard. Give Rohl the right tools, I think we win the league next year.

Only players I'm keen on retaining are Fernandez, Rommens and Naderi. I'm happy to keep Barron as well.

Chukwuani is definitely a good player, but I think he has hit a patch of poor form lately, and I'd take the money if an offer comes for Raskin, Dio, Gassama and Chermiti. We must sell the rest as they are not suitable.

06 May 2026 14:06:53
The squad inherited by SG was worse, but where were we when Rohl came in 8th? SG got to change it. I have doubts about Rohl, but he does deserve a chance imo next season.

06 May 2026 14:25:37
Doesn't matter so much what he took over but actually what he had to work with. I'd take Gerrard's 18/19 squad over this one every day.

06 May 2026 14:33:45
Gerrard also inherited:-
Tav - who plenty rate / plenty don't.
Morelos - Rangers European top goalscorer. Plenty rated / plenty didn't.
Candeias - Plenty said it took years to replace him on the right.
Ryan Jack - Plenty loved him. Plenty seen him as injury prone.
4 players who were regulars in Gerrard's first season.

3 who were regulars after that when fit.
So, to say Gerrard was starting from scratch is nonsense.
He had a FB who scored loads and assisted.
A striker who scored.
A RW who did loads of work.
A midfielder who was one of Gerrard's first picks when fit.

Love the positivity, Ayrshire, and there's a lot of sensible/pragmatic points you are making.

I too want Rohl to stay on and work through this.

Got to add that the mistakes he has been making have been very poor, though, and he needs to learn quickly. Hopefully the new season gives him his chance to prove he can learn.

06 May 2026 14:43:19
Agree, Spud. In my opinion we can't judge Rohl this season, but he's certainly steadied a sinking ship, let's say. Think there will be a high turn over of players in the summer. With new signings, the eagerness to impress. Players that have been here for years just going through the motions. Maybe right or wrong, but I won't judge Danny until end of next season.

06 May 2026 14:51:29
Don't forget McGregor, Arfield and Wallace, who he also "inherited", MPH. They would also walk into this team, among others.

06 May 2026 15:29:52
Mph, that's a very good point about the players he inherited, and I agree, Rostoto, about him making mistakes. Everyone makes them, every manager makes them. He's had to pull a squad who had 1 win in 8 games and battered in Europe, with one of our heaviest and most embarrassing defeats to Brugge, back into a title race.

My theory is he drained every last drop out of them and they fell short at the split. I don't think it's because Rohl is rubbish or because the Spain trip. It's because the players aren't good enough or don't have the mentality regardless of cost.

06 May 2026 15:45:27
Wallace would walk into this team? We must be dreadful.

06 May 2026 16:06:58
The squad wasn't as bad as some make out that SG took over.

I just don't want to be feeling like this next season. That's my problem, though. And can Rohl win us the league? Who knows.

06 May 2026 16:50:21
As you said in the previous post, Storm, I think if we get a 6, wingers who will take a man on and get balls into the box, a creative mid and proper defenders, then I think we will win it.

We need to be fitter and need more athleticism in this squad.

Most of all though we need players with balls willing to risk a pass through the lines rather than the square ball and slow play. It's plagued every manager since GVB. Hopefully removing players like Raskin, who constantly slow the game, will help us drastically.

06 May 2026 17:30:16
We already have one winger who will take players on, but we loaned him to Killi. He is young and has a lot to learn defensively, but Curtis is playing better than any of the current wingers for us. imo.

06 May 2026 17:32:20
BTW, I am not saying he should be first choice every week, but we should be rotating him into the team and progressing him here rather than another loan.

06 May 2026 18:35:58
Totally agree, tjm.

06 May 2026 18:47:45
Bluewoulddo, with a choice of Meghoma and no backup, then yes, Wallace walks into the team.

06 May 2026 18:51:15
I actually believe it was the right decision for Curtis to send him on loan, as it's really benefitted him. I hope he gets given the chance next year tho.

06 May 2026 19:24:21
Gerrard didn't inherit McGregor and Arfield, they were both signed after he was appointed.

06 May 2026 20:23:54
No, they weren't Wslgers. They were agreed earlier, and signed before he signed. In May, he signed in June.
