Talking of not wanting ex players back. 1 I would love to see back is Calvin bassey.
05 Jan 2026 17:05:53
The big man is doing well at Fulham i think he could end up at a villa or spurs.
05 Jan 2026 17:18:29
Spurs have got a very good left footed cb, really like Bassey though.

Bassett could play for any team in Europe.
Take great pride in fact I also said this way way back about him when he still played for us and was scoffed at from most.
I said in a few years he'd be one of the best in Europe and could play for any club.
His next move will prove this. I expect it to be Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool type move or maybe even to Italy or Spain. Atletico have been scouting English market a lot as have all the German clubs. Big man is some player.

Msg to clarify sorry, when he was playing left back for us I said he's got all the attributes to be one of the best left sided centre backs in Europe.
Most said no some severely scoffed, as I get a lot when talking about players. Comments like what makes u qualified to have an eye for a player and so on.
Hes went and proved me right as he is one of the best left sided back centre backs in Europe as we speak. All he needs now is a move to one of the best teams.
He could go to a Newcastle or villa I accept that, but from there I'd expect him to step up again to the elite.
Hes such a good centre back for modern football.
Had quite a chat with the Ed about it again last season and whether he could maybe move to Liverpool.

Stevie.
05 Jan 2026 20:13:39
Stevie I agree he is a very good player. My one reservation for him being able to play for one of the EPL top teams would be what happened in his brief time at Ajax. It didn't work there because he wasn't comfortable in their passing game.
I think all top teams would be looking for a player who has that ability. not saying it wouldn't happen just a little doubt.

Stevie, Bassey is a top class lcb mate, but Van de Ven I'd choose if had a choice mate.
05 Jan 2026 20:23:27
Good few cracking left footed cb's in that league mate.
05 Jan 2026 20:23:34
Angus that's a fair way to look at it. Maybe that's why he hasn't moved yet mate. Perhaps moving him back to left back in a team that wants to defend first would suit him at a bigger club but for me gk's save rubbishs and defenders defend so that's where I'm coming from with my thoughts on him.
Totally get what u mean though mate and it's a good point.
05 Jan 2026 20:36:48
He wouldn't get a game at the top clubs in Europe psg real Barcelona Man City etc… but below them maybe.
05 Jan 2026 20:55:48
Loved big Bassey but he flopped at Ajax.
05 Jan 2026 21:03:06
Foolmonty well he ain't flooping in the best league.
05 Jan 2026 21:04:23
Storm what I mean is he's good enough to play for those clubs, maybe not get in ahead of certain players they have but based on how he's turned out he is good enough to play for anyone.
Angus point is a good one, I take certain clubs prefer a top class passer ahead of a top defender.
05 Jan 2026 22:07:13
Stevie not denying his defensive ability and top clubs want that firstly but I think they also want that ball playing ability.
However I haven't seen much of him at Fulham so he might be doing that better. Ajax's style would be difficult for any defender to play initially.
05 Jan 2026 22:41:33
He isn't good enough to play for those clubs tho. He is just below that level IMO. Just a difference of opinion that's all mate you think he would I don't. No hassle in it and we may never know unless one of the big ones take a chance on him.
05 Jan 2026 22:54:43
Angus he's very good at stepping out with the ball and he has strength to dribble past players if he wants to try that, his pace is immense for recovering from his or others mistakes.
Fulham do have a manager who likes to play the passing game wherever he's been, maybe not so weak at Everton right enough.
If bassey wasn't any good at that he'd have been sold by now maybe.
He's obviously not at the level as ramos or can dijk of the past but he's more than able to.
05 Jan 2026 23:02:36
I think he is close to his level, maybe a villa or slightly bigger English team but he is no where near PSG, Madrid, Bayern etc.
05 Jan 2026 23:39:28
Angus doing well at Fulham mate.
06 Jan 2026 00:14:27
Big Shirley is a fantastic player. His first European game for us was a bit shakey but after that he was immense. At ajax club insiders said he was the best defender at the club the fans just didn't like him. Think ajax hung him out to dry but he got the move to Fulham and has kicked on from there.
06 Jan 2026 08:51:16
Star I didn't say he wasn't. what I said was that he struggled to play the total football element of the game that Ajax want to play. so I was suggesting (that is all) that he may struggle with the very top clubs needs to be the first playmaker in the team.
as Stevie said even at Rangers he got the ball and moved forward; however I don't think either he is at that top level (yet? ). loved him as a player but trying to be realistic as to his current level. only seen him in snippets at Fulham though.
