Liam Kelly close to agreeing a new one year deal.

Very suitable back-up. ?

07 Mar 2026 13:44:22
I'd still be bringing in a new gk, a younger profile, one of the best young up-and-coming from Europe, with the hope he can take over from Butland within 1-2 seasons.

I know Pierce Charles, the Northern Irish goalkeeper, is currently injured with a shoulder injury, but depending on him getting over this injury and getting back fit again, I'd want us to sign him. ? He's a very good young goalkeeper for me. ?

07 Mar 2026 16:06:57
Walter thought Mason Munn or McGuire were very good, highly respected goalkeepers.

Charles has a continuing shoulder issue since youth.

07 Mar 2026 16:29:46
John, is McGuire not only 16/17? He'll need a few years on loan when he's 18-20 before he's ready to play for us.

Same with Munn, is he not 18/19? He has had a bad loan this season, so again he'll need 2 years playing first-team football before he can be considered for us.

Motherwell. ?
Will get gunned next week too.

07 Mar 2026 17:12:35
They may have shot their bolt.

07 Mar 2026 17:35:40
Gubbed, I mean.

07 Mar 2026 17:45:06
Motherwell losing today may just make Celtic confident - so don't discount a wee result for Well next Sat. ?

07 Mar 2026 18:20:05
Would love McGuire to make it at Rangers. Top talent.

07 Mar 2026 18:22:34
I really don't see it. They could have a wee run of defeats now.

07 Mar 2026 19:07:04
Absolutely, John. I'm not saying young Munn and McGuire are not good young goalkeepers, because, undoubtedly, both are highly rated. ? ??

07 Mar 2026 19:14:01
Stevie_G, the only problem with that is we're not the team we used to be. We don't have the same attractiveness or money to compete with big teams for these players.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'd definitely like us to do something along those lines.

07 Mar 2026 21:13:59
You're right in what u say about us not being able to attract the top talents, but that's precisely why I'm saying go and get someone young in profile.

Eastern Europe, Germany, Scandinavia, etc., all have top young goalkeepers. If we can identify the right one, around 21-23 yo, then in 1 or 2 years we'll have a ready-made replacement for Jack.

07 Mar 2026 23:05:35
The idea of bringing in a young keeper sounds good in theory, but we will just ruin whoever it is by keeping them on the bench. Maybe buy a young keeper but instantly loan them out for a couple of seasons to develop.

07 Mar 2026 23:54:51
Bleed blue, of course that's an option too, maybe, but it doesn't help if Butland gets injured in the first game after the window shuts and we're stuck with only Kelly for half a season.

I'd bring the guy in and give him X amount of games.

08 Mar 2026 10:09:20
Stevie, correct, but the Christmas guys on here wanted Jim instead of Butland.

08 Mar 2026 10:32:47
Cheers, Walter and Stevie.

Charles has played 18 games at first-team level in his career. He is seen as pretty average.
As a youth player at City, he had a shoulder issue.

At Wednesday, he has been out since August. He had an operation on a dodgy shoulder, and was returning in January for a game that was abandoned.

In training, he again injured a shoulder and required surgery on the opposite shoulder. He is not expected to return till at least April. We should stay well clear of a goalie with two dodgy shoulders. Not much use.

Paul, I understand McGuire will be an Arsenal player soon enough. We won't see him in our first team.

08 Mar 2026 11:51:15
John, I'd need to agree with that assessment, and I think if Charles is as good as he's made out to be, then the only way we'd get him is due to the above. See Roofe as an example.

I'd read about 2 months ago we knocked back a bid of £1m+ from Arsenal for McGuire.
They must have come back higher, John?

08 Mar 2026 16:32:28
The package for McGuire is closer to two million, Stevie.
