Botafogo in talks to sign Danilo from Rangers
Latest from Sky Sports News' Anthony Joseph and Sahil Jaidka:
Brazilian club Botafogo are in talks with Rangers over a deal to sign Danilo.
The striker did not travel to the club's pre-season camp in Spain amid interest from Europe, but now the South American outfit have made a move for the 27-year-old.
He spent the second-half of last season on loan at NEC Nijmegen.
The Brazilian – who has struggled with injuries since joining in 2023 - scored 16 goals in 76 appearances for Rangers and has two years left on his deal at Ibrox.

How Outgoing Transfers Impact Our Budget.
Here is a rough estimate to illustrate how player sales actually impact what we can spend.
When we signed Danilo for a reported £6.3m fee on a five-year contract, his cost would be spread out across the length of his deal.
Under football amortisation rules, this equals a book value charge of £1.26m per year.
Because that cost is spread out, selling him this year means we still have £2.5m left on our books.
If we were to sell him now for £1m, it does not mean we get an extra £1m to spend. Instead, because the sale price is lower than his remaining book value, we actually take a £1.5m hit on our transfer funds.

EHL, but could that hit be counteracted by the reduction in our salary for the year? So Danilo is on high wages, reportedly 26-28k per week depending on the website, which would be around 1.5m per year saved on his wages.
It's a pretty complex process, the old PSR or FFP or whatever it's called these days. 😂
Good info on the amortisation though.

Thanks for the explanation, EHL. Selling Danilo for £1m would generate an accounting loss of roughly £1.5m because his remaining book value is higher than the sale price. That would negatively affect our reported profit for the year. However, it does not automatically reduce the transfer budget by £1.5m. The club would still receive the transfer fee (subject to payment terms, of course), remove his wages from the payroll, and management would decide how much of those resources could be reinvested.
Transfer budgets are a football management "decision", not an accounting figure. Basically, the management team will know and expect/accept the hit on someone like Danilo.

Correct, Ayrshire, this was more in response to some of the threads being posted adding up potential sale values to demonstrate what we could spend.
Same logic applies for any purchase - I.e. if we spend £8m on Dahl on a 4 year deal, the transfer costs can be spread across the deal for UEFA's cost control reporting, so £2m a year.

Sorry Brian, but if we want to play European football, then transfer budgets are absolutely an accounting figure driven by adjusted turnover.
Obviously the club can make an informed business decision to spend below the cap, however they cannot go above the cap without sanction.

When I read those first couple of lines, I thought you had lost your login details again, Gazza. 🤣

Spot on, EHL. 👍😎 Re above cap and sanctions.

Cheers, EHL. I never knew this.

I find the financial side of the game fascinating, Stevie, but I really struggle to understand the complexities.
I do bug those at the club involved in these areas to try and get a better understanding.
Their words around 3-4 of our pending sales are that they will be detrimental to the budget sheet term, but beneficial in the long term.
Just goes to show you that we are still suffering from decisions made at the club 2 or 3 years ago.

EHL, just read in the Sun, I know, that Danilo only has a year left, is this right bud? If it is and based on your £1.26m per year, we really need north of that should he go to Botafogo to clear the outstanding amount, cheers bud👍

On the same perspective though, EHL, would a new sale be shown across the length of the new contract?
15 Jul 2026 13:48:59
Rangers56, a sale for us is the money we receive. We don't amortise that. So, like EHL said, we take the full figure as a one of payment and put that into the coughers unless there are add ons which become.
15 Jul 2026 15:26:17
Ross Wilson's last summer and Beale set us back big time with the huge wages and big fees.
15 Jul 2026 15:27:52
Rangers56, yeah.
In terms of finances, the money comes out of the bank whenever we pay it.
However, in terms of the reporting requirements for UEFA, we can spread the core costs across the duration of the contract.
Which is why quoting things like net spend is good if we're looking at how we operate as a business, but doesn't really mean a thing in terms of our spending in terms of UEFA.
