Think loaning out theo Aasgaard next year has to be on the cards
Into a Spanish or Dutch league
Bit more time on the ball will bring him back a better player or bigger sell on

19 Mar 2026 16:28:41
If Thelo played for Motherwell, everyone would want him signed.

Last Rangers set-piece goal.

Goalscorer: Thelo Aasgaard.

He adds something else; we just need to unlock other aspects of his game and develop him, rather than pine for older players at lower clubs.

I agree there is a player in there, Aphe. He's being played too deep for me, and playing it safe, much like the rest of midfield. I'd like to see him in and around the box more, getting shots away and holding it up. Workrate will always go against him, though.

19 Mar 2026 16:48:16
What's the point of sending him to a league where he gets more time on the ball, just to bring him back to a league where he gets less time on the ball? I don't understand the logic. He has to get up to speed with Scottish football or be sold.

It's as simple as that. So, options are: keep him and play him, and hope he gets used to it; loan him to a Scottish team; or sell him. There is no point, in my eyes, sending him to a different paced league. Won't do him any favours for our league.

19 Mar 2026 17:07:48
I think it's taken him time to settle. Full pre season under his belt and settled in Scotland, then we see. If still not producing come January, then I agree. I see a player in him at times.

19 Mar 2026 17:13:20
And if we were to sign Motherwell players, and they turn out like Aasgaard and don't make the grade either, then we'd try and move them on too. What's the point of keeping hold of players who aren't cutting it? It happens. Some players don't work out and get moved on.

19 Mar 2026 17:13:30
Really is a shame how things have panned out with him. We all had high hopes for him being the one player that could make a difference. Just hasn't happened for the boy.

19 Mar 2026 17:38:31
He's not suited to our domestic football. It's too quick for him, and I think he's struggling with expectations. He'll have a decent career in football. It won't be he thou.

19 Mar 2026 18:16:50
What is it when we get a player who seems slow but is actually using his brain to find space? His stats are better than I thought when I checked - on average he makes 33 passes per game and is successful in 86% of those.

He loses possession just over 8.2 times per game, whereas the Motherwell trio we want to sign are Just (13.1), Maswanhise (14.8) and Slattery (12.4). He could create more chances per game, at just under 0.75, which is less than Slattery and Just, but his shot accuracy is better than all but Maswanhise.

So, his stats show he is perhaps better than the eye tells, but I also feel he can do much better. He is a confidence player, I read when he arrived, so perhaps that will be the missing link. Also, does a pre-season get his conditioning up, which helps him reach that next level.

19 Mar 2026 18:21:06
Excellent, Angus. Truth is, we always overstate how good opposition players are, whilst belittling the young players who wear a Rangers shirt.

19 Mar 2026 18:23:17
Not seen any interest in Slattery, and he plays a very different position to Just or Maswanhise.

19 Mar 2026 20:21:12
Aasguard has a decent goals return for games played in comparison with our other midfielders. I'd stick with him for another year.

19 Mar 2026 20:31:12
How many players do we sign that don't do it, but we keep saying there's a player in there? We desperately need those players to turn up if we want tae win anything.

19 Mar 2026 20:48:45
Correct. Slattery came up in the stats I readily found, so I just put them in. But here is the stats for Elliot Watt, who fans are interested in: lost possession 11. 6 times per game, pass accuracy 86% (from that metronomic number 6?), so same as Aasgaard, who is criticised for both in his performances.

So, can they produce the same stats for us, or would they wilt slightly as well?

Also, Just only played 2 of the last 4 NZ internationals, so would he get the same criticism as Olsen and Aasgaard for being dropped?

We spend so much time putting our own players down; the same would happen to all those 3 as soon as they joined us and had a bad game.

The point is, Aasgaard isn't performing as poorly as people think.

19 Mar 2026 20:55:15
100%, Angus. We all know that Skov and Aasgaard would both be starters for New Zealand and/or Zimbabwe.

19 Mar 2026 21:04:27
Orange, that's probably the most common sense answer I've read on here in a while.

19 Mar 2026 21:40:38
Cheers OWS.

19 Mar 2026 21:48:03
Just because someone would be a starter for a national team doesn't mean they are suited to a specific league. They don't go hand in hand.

19 Mar 2026 22:05:13
OT, possibly correct, but neither does playing well for one team mean the player would be able to perform to that standard for another club. If it were that linear, then the success rate for signings would be greater than 40%.

I mention the 2/4 stat, as there was criticism of our players in another thread about being dropped by their national team. It happens all the time for lots of reasons.

19 Mar 2026 22:15:59
I didn't say that was true either, Angus. I didn't even mention it, in fact. All I was stating was a poster said they would get into said national teams, and I said it doesn't go hand in hand to being suited to our league. Apologies if you picked that up wrong though. ?

19 Mar 2026 22:42:42
OT, I didn't say you did, and I didn't pick it up incorrectly. I was adding to the debate on the point you made about national teams by saying, similarly, that playing well for one team doesn't automatically mean you will play well for another, even in the same league.

Fans seem to think 2 + 2 = 5 when it comes to that.

Apologies for putting your initials in, but it was purely to continue a discussion with you. ?

19 Mar 2026 23:47:08
Angus, in my post about them getting dropped, I did also say I hoped they were called up to give them confidence, and hoped not getting called up would motivate them to get back in. So it wasn't about slagging them off or criticising, but obviously it's not just us who have been disappointed by them.

20 Mar 2026 05:56:45
Why are you apologising for putting my initials in?

20 Mar 2026 08:19:04
Kaiser, I didn't think you would be; just trying to have a chat about football and showing the other side. We are too quick to put down our own players whilst eyeing others with envy. And, just as you say, not every player we will sign will be a success, but I would still argue that they need time to show whether they will be a success or not, not 1/2 season or 7 games as is the case currently.

OT, because I respond to people often to answer their point. Then, I add to it, and often get the comment that they didn't say anything on the second point. So, it is probably more sensible for me to just discuss the point and not alert the person I am chatting about their post. Just me really.

20 Mar 2026 13:18:30
I don't like comparing these stats at all, because they don't reference the conditions at all.

If you relate the stats to the actual game, you probably find that just loses possession trying to pass forward, and Aasgaard loses possession trying to get turned. It's a massive difference, but it doesn't show in this basic evaluation of stats.

The fact is, when he's on the pitch, he isn't contributing enough, doesn't get involved in the play, doesn't know where to be on the pitch, and looks lost when we're out of possession.

Everyone can see he needs to do more, including Danny Rohl, who will obviously be looking to ship him out in the summer along with many more.
