Anyone watch the Madrid v City game last night?

Donnarumma with 2 massive errors. i say errors

He literally pulled his arm away for the first two goals.

Looked almost intentional to me at the time.

And that's one of the top keepers in the world, so just shows maybe the criticism of Butland isn't so warranted.

I agree. Butland saves us a lot more than he costs us.

I know what you're saying, Ally.

To give him the benefit of the doubt, on the first one he may have thought he was outside, or would slide outside his box.

His dive for the second one looked strange, but maybe he thought Valverde would shoot near post and got caught?

Every keeper makes errors. It's more other things, like not controlling his area, poor communication, struggling with crosses, and poor kicking. People have problems with that for Butland.

Butland is a good keeper. His main problem is not commanding the six yard box. The other issue is that he is always being compared to Woods, Klos, McGregor, and The Goalie.

You can't not criticise a keeper for an error just because he makes saves at other times.
Does that mean we can't criticise Chermiti because he missed chances but maybe scored a couple of crackers previously?
Or Souttar, who made an error but threw his body on the line at other times?
Or the much maligned Tav for his defensive duties but gets a free pass for his goals and assists?
If everybody got a free pass, then there would be no dropping players or actual improvements in their performance, as we would just accept their shortcomings.

P.S. Not blaming all Rangers ills on Butland, Chermiti, Souttar or Tav before some get their knickers in a twist.

I agree, Ally. Butland is a top keeper. Aye, he might have his flaws, but when it comes to rubbish stopping, which is a keeper's main objective, he is class.

12 Mar 2026 10:29:37
We won't get better than Butland. ????

MPH, of course people can discuss mistakes they think they see; the problem is that one error is given as the reason why we lose or win a game. That isn't the case.
Take the Man City goalie last night - it looked like the GK on the first either pulled his arm away or didn't extend it fully. I don't know why he did what he did, so was it a mistake or just a wrong choice? Did he think he was going to go outside the area? Did he think he would bring the player down? I don't know, so I prefer to see the ability of Valverde in scoring it, rather than blame a player for not dealing with it.

Same with our players, really.

The three big EPL teams, who all took hammerings over the last two nights, were let down by their goalies making terrible mistakes. I think Donnaruma thought he was near the edge of the box and took his arm away, but in fact he was comfortably inside, and it was a terrible misjudgement.

The Celtic keeper came for everything inside his box, and won everything on Sunday, taking huge pressure off his defence. Butland is a brilliant shot-stopper, but really poor at commanding his box and playing out from the back. Every time there's a passback to Butland, my heart skips a beat. I think we can and will get better.

12 Mar 2026 14:04:10
MPH, who says you can't criticise him?

12 Mar 2026 14:37:42
I'm not saying we cannot criticise players, but at our level, Butland is the best we will get, and that means he'll have flaws.

I agree, and have said it before, that it is so unfair to compare Butland with the greats of our club.

Chermiti is a terrible example, as he doesn't score enough goals. :)

The Spurs keeper got subbed very early as well.

Boy Blue 4, Butland had almost nothing to do, there were no shots for him to save or crosses to come and collect, and, like the Celtic keeper, he had a clean sheet. I would take Butland over Sinasalo every day of the week.

Wsl, I'm not just talking about Sunday, mate. I'm talking about Butland as a whole, and gave an example of how a commanding keeper can help his defence in times of need. I get we aren't going to get a top keeper, but, from the 3 things you want a keeper to be good at, shot-stopping, commanding your box, and good playing out from the back, lbh Butland is only good at one of them.

Is that really good enough for a Rangers keeper? imo it isn't. I would rather have him than Sinssalo too, but that ain't much to shout about as he's their backup goalie, Wsl. Just my opinion, mate.
