David Weir
Stuart Webber
Paul Mitchel

All being linked with the current vacancy of sporting director

Outwith David Weir - would anyone like any of the other 2?

27 Nov 2025 08:25:26
Norwich and Newcastle most recent, don't think Weir would come.

Stig

Davie Weir, albeit my favourite and gers stalwart, got to be outsider. Gone Strasbourg weeks ago after 6 good years Brighton. After such short stint at Strasbourg even if had time yet to sign contract going to be difficult to prise away, and so far silence deafening.

Davie Weir would be my no.1 choice like many others Thestigno1 ? However he's working for strasbourg now, so unfortunately just can't for the life of me see us being able to get davie Weir ☹️.

Didn't we get linked with Paul Mitchell last time? Would be interesting but I don't know anything about any sporting directors outwith those who have been at Rangers.

27 Nov 2025 10:32:48
Why the obsession with Davie Weir, from one poster on here in particular? His name would never be mentioned if he hadn't played for us.

27 Nov 2025 10:45:37
Scott in hindsight should have probably left Weir name out of it.

It's the other 2 I'm more interested to know everyone's views on?

27 Nov 2025 11:18:15
I think Weir's reputation from Brighton would have had his name mentioned regardless whether or not he played for us Scott.

27 Nov 2025 11:49:57
Paul Mitchell is rated highly, yes i think we did Rfc_55.

I don't know anything about the other two but I would take Davie Weir, experienced in the role plus he has knowledge of the club and Scottish football and he knows what is needed to win.
Keeping Thornton as CEO as some on here who know better than me say he s a good guy with real experience plus Weir as Sporting Director seems to me to bring a bit of Rangersness back at board level and guys who know their jobs.

If we are still looking for a DOF we should be looking for the same profile if possible.

27 Nov 2025 13:24:48
Wsl Weir has very little experience in the role as he just took that role when going to France a few weeks ago. That was not his role at Brighton.

27 Nov 2025 14:35:37
Mitchell is a no, heard he was difficult to work with at Newcastle and didn't get along with Howe and others in the club. Pretty sure he was linked with the role when Clement wanted a DoF in, Clement worked under him at Monaco too and we chose Koppen with Clement's input. Whether that was down to the same reasons as Newcastle I don't know.

Webber is a no too, Norwich have been a mess for years back and that goes to his time too. We wanted rid of Thelwell who was a DoF in the Premier league and not the championship, thought Robbie coming from Norwich was a joke.

Weir ain't coming and even if he did we'd need to pay a boat load for him. I think we need to pay for someone to get the role, there's a reason some are free cause they weren't very good. My shout would be Phil Giles from Brentford as he's done just as good a job as Weir with a smaller budget, Overmars if you want to forget the trouble he was involved with or if possible Monchi who just left Villa. Portuguese, Dutch and German seem to have good DoFs.

Don't think Weir has ever been DOF until he went to stratsburg,
Seems to get quoted just because he is ex player. not sure what would qualify him for role at Rangers other than that.

DJB Giles is an outstanding candidate, not sure we could entice him to Scotland,
