I'd like to see us working more on sports psychology this season. I know it's huge in sports now.
I think the players would benefit from it.

Think EHL had eluded to this being a area of development, I want to say that he even might be involved in it in his new position.
13 Jun 2025 10:05:36
Club employed the wrong manager for that Mark, Ancelotti would have been the more Sports Science and Psychology focussed coach.
13 Jun 2025 10:28:03
I can confirm I'm currently putting my Sports Phycology degree to good use.
{Ed001's Note - I never knew you studied the usage of seaweed and algae in sports. Very interesting EHL, would love to read your thesis....}
13 Jun 2025 10:53:11
U had to look that up??.
{Ed001's Note - no, actually I knew that. I never knew it would come in useful on the sites though!! That made my day being able to use that completely useless bit of knowledge.}
13 Jun 2025 11:05:31
This is my favourite post of all time Ed!
{Ed001's Note - not often you get to discuss your speciality I am sure. It does seem a niche career you have made for yourself.}
13 Jun 2025 11:56:19
"You'll always find him at the fishtank at parties"???.
{Ed001's Note - good one, that made me chuckle.}
13 Jun 2025 12:28:31

I've got an honours degree in sports psychology.
It's utilised very effectively in many sports and clubs/ franchises. Many Manager and Head Coaches are not keen thou for several reasons mainly a lack of understanding or fear their message is diluted.
Many are also unaware of the benefits to individuals and the team and they've never saw it implemented successfully.
There is certain trait education that we should be rolling out at all age grades but the younger the better as they're more malleable to information and influence.
{Ed001's Note - that is why I have always maintained that the best coaches should be employed at the youngest levels, rather than at first team level. We need to change the mindset and value given to coaching to reward those who work with youngsters higher than those working with adults.}
13 Jun 2025 12:38:08
Sports psychology very interesting topic. When you look at Dessers, gets pelters yet continues to plug away and not hide.
13 Jun 2025 12:40:03
Ed 001 Bang on the money.
Too many youth coaches focus on technical, physical and tactical but ignore the mental side which drives the other 3.
If you're youth team coaches aren't educating your young players in;
Leadership
Communication (types of and learning styles)
Culture (enhancing and building)
Organisation
Focus
Resilience (Mental Toughness)
Values and most important ACCOUNTABILITY they're selling the kids short.
{Ed001's Note - the first thing they should be focused on is making them better people, better footballers should be secondary to that but it does go hand-in-hand. Better people are better at teamwork, vital in a team sport and in life in general, in case they don't make it.}
13 Jun 2025 12:49:11
Ed 001
Whilst I don't disagree kids being good people starts at home. It's very difficult given some of them are from broken back grounds but that's why teaching basic values is an absolute must. It's also difficult because they're not with you enough at a young age and the more dominant influences rub off on them more. But you can only try.
{Ed001's Note - I understand that and I know it is difficult, but that is all the more reason for academies to emphasise that first and foremost. It is about giving the kids the best chance in life, whether they make it as a footballer or not. That is why the best of the best should be working with kids, not with the adults. Instead it is used as a training ground for new coaches. It doesn't make sense.}

LMac and Ed, good posts.
13 Jun 2025 13:10:38
Can't disagree with any of that Ed and Lmac.
Nice one fork fish ? ?.
13 Jun 2025 13:13:47
Ed 001
I agree but many of the coaches at all levels have the attitude I done fine without it. These traits require a hell of a lot of study to implement effectively and then you need to know the best learning style for every kid in the academy some clubs sadly just can't be bothered.
{Ed001's Note - it is a shame but hopefully it will change over time.}
13 Jun 2025 13:26:57
Rangers currently have a consultant Sports Psychologist and she's very good unless she's left.
It's not something you dip your toe into it constantly evolves. From new holistic practices to brain imaging you really need to be at it a lot.
13 Jun 2025 13:31:18
Ayrshire tatties not the same after they stopped topping the fields in seaweed. Just saying ?.
13 Jun 2025 13:40:27
Jasper I think russell martin is quite big on sports psychology mate.
13 Jun 2025 14:04:30
LMac / Ed - your thought process aligns with that of the 49ers.
When I'm not preparing the seaweed and kelp wraps, we're working on a huge expansion to our player integration department.
This will expand to cover all age groups and cover both the men's and women's game and will focus on new signings, players in recovery and players out on loan.
It's very much focused on the clubs values and integrating players with our culture from as early as possible.
{Ed001's Note - that made me genuinely laugh out loud at the thought of you and the wraps.}
13 Jun 2025 15:10:42
Just to add to your entertainment Ed - there are a few others from the club who lurk on here, so I expect to take a fair bit of stick over the next few weeks!
{Ed001's Note - they will be laughing the other side of their face when they need that kale to heal them after their latest injury mate.}
13 Jun 2025 15:20:44
Don't knock it Ed, my iq went from 109 to mensa level, eating 10 kelp wraps a day, seaweed in ma scottish porridge oats ? ?.
