With talk of another rebuild and with Tav leaving, Rangers are screaming out for a new Captain. Who would fit the required qualities to follow in the footsteps of Butcher, Gough and Ferguson. I believe this person needs brought in, they are NOT already at the club.

Rangers and the SPL don't have the finance to have players like the ones you mention. The catch 22 is a player that has the mettle to captain a successful Rangers side, and also be a quality player to the standard we want, probably would play elsewhere. We would need to unearth a player like a Balogun, as nobody at the club right now is competent enough.

Raskin is prob off, but imo he is too divisive. Souttar is just average, Rommens "looks" like a captain, but who knows. The problem has been identified; in general, we need collective leadership on the pitch, not just one captain. We need 11 captains; right now we have none.

It's not as easy to bring in a captain as you might think. When we signed Bruno Alves, he seemed like an obvious choice for captain, and many called for it. But it didn't work out for Bruno here, despite his age, experiences, and past success.

It is a risk to give the armband to someone who is not established at the club imo.

I agree there is no obvious leader at the club. So it's a tough one.

It was discussed this evening on SSB, caller said obvious choice, not at the club just now, could be Shankland. His age is against him a wee bit, but he certainly fits the mold. A missed opportunity on free transfer last season. Another could be Lewis Ferguson, however, his current valuation is certainly a heavy consideration.

Very very difficult to find those types, first you need strength of character, ability and class, allied to a indomitable will to be the best of the best, and a Rangers mindset is always a good thing, a man who stands up to danger, stands firm in the face of pressure and takes others forward, makes the flair players try harder, pushes them to better themselves, and gives them confidence and a leader to look up to and want to be with, Lewis Ferguson probably is a Rangers player, is he a Rangers captain? Maybe
I'm struggling with any other names, but they are out there,

We must find at least 5 leaders, but only one Captain,

Hearts have a few Rangers supporters, inc the manager. Just shows spirit is still there and can do well. If we use this as a blueprint and add finance, good management, we should compete again.

TT, totally agree. A Jordan Henderson type would fit the bill. ? Was his name not muted before he went to Brentford? A real captain type would be the best part of the new jigsaw rather than coggling together the best we can, but for each new position (although that is key too!), let's spend real money (if that's required) on a leader to firstly spearhead the change and set the standard.

I know saying that is easy, but actually achieving it could be the hardest part, but imo this is super important if we strive for real change and, like you, TT, I feel there must be that type of player out there to fill the void - It's just finding him. ?

Blue Floyd, even though Jordan Henderson is now in his mid 30s, I don't think there's any chance he's coming up here to Rangers, mate. ?

23 May 2026 07:16:40
I am old enough and was lucky enough to follow teams that had Gough, Bomber, Coisty, McCall, Goram etc.
Every one of them was capable of being Captain, but more importantly set standards, led by example, and knew what it meant to play for Rangers. It rubbed off on the non-Scottish guys like Hateley, Gazza, Laudrup.

So for me, a few leaders are more important than getting in one guy as Captain.
Get them in and the Captaincy will take care of itself.
Heard some mention bringing in the likes of Patterson, Lewis Ferguson, Shankland. If we got a core of guys like them and added quality from elsewhere, it would be a start.

23 May 2026 07:23:37
Sir Walter, you just never know? But I am saying it's that type of character/leader which we need to take us forward, and to help gel a team/squad. ?

23 May 2026 08:36:58
Blue Floyd, I'm in agreement with you regarding Jordan Henderson. He would be a very good signing if we could get him for a couple of seasons, and I also agree he's captain material, but the wages and convincing him to come to Scotland would scupper any possible deal imo, mate. ?

I agree with Tjbb, as one player on their own can't carry that sort of influence. Our captains in the past had many other players around them who were experienced internationals, who helped drive the standards.

So, if people think it is one player, that player will be like Tav and be blamed for every title we fail to win. Butcher may have shouted a lot more, but I don't think even he could change standards at the club that much.

23 May 2026 10:48:58
Many are constantly indicating that the club infrastructure needs fixing, that Danny should get time to get his own players and to set up his own team. A captain is a leader, sets standards, motivates, and takes responsibility. The new appointment of a Captain will say loads. I honestly believe that until Gio left, Tav had those attributes. However, he stopped taking responsibility years ago.

So yes, we need a core of players around that want to win, need to win and, more importantly, hate to lose. However, we have had a so called leadership group that TBH seemed like a sort of corporate approach to a footballing issue. Get that approach binned.

Remember, respect isn't just given, it's earned. Therefore, that's why I believe the new Captain must be known. Hit the ground running.

Could argue Ferguson on a loan because of previous injury, see how he does before big outlay. But everything from his camp suggests he goes to a top 5 league.

23 May 2026 11:21:00
Agreed, Angus - Our overall standards and class of player has definitely slipped over the years. However, if you don't have a true leader on the park who makes people accountable for their game/marking or mistakes, encourages or demands more from others and leads by example, then we will just have as we have had for many seasons, and that is players looking around at each other, shrugging shoulders and not taking responsibility for any poor play or slacking and having no real direction and looking for someone else to blame.

Imho. ?

23 May 2026 11:31:04
How's about Ritchie, Greig, Caldow, Henderson, Wilson, Millar, Foolmonty. These guys did not need a captain.

23 May 2026 11:40:30
John, correct, old school players had desire and self policed, but most of the guys we have today certainly need some direction, wouldn't you say? As it's the here and now that needs sorted not yesteryear. ?

23 May 2026 12:08:05
A captain is much more than the stuff on a football field. I don't believe the senior group we had would have got anywhere near teams of yesteryear, but this is now. They did and it failed. Reduce the squad size and bring in the right type of quality.

If players at 20-21 can't handle the SPL, they shouldn't be brought in. Do not go about physicality, mentality, or skill levels that projects will have. Cotton wool generation does my nut in.
