Never mind a Scottish No2 being sourced its a true Scottish identity we need ON the park as well as in management - Barron was only Scot named in our squad and am sure he would have done far better than some of those imposters last night - yet never got a sniff. Hearts had five Scots in the first team and two other Scots came on as subs and to a man they outplayed us second half when it was really needed.
Also Mr Shankland will be laughing up his sleeve at us - the same guy we should have sourced for few hundred thousand couple of years ago when he could have been difference or even picked him on a free last season - but oh no - he is not good enough for us. Irony is a leveller and we should be ashamed that the lad was looked down on by some on here who said he was not Rangers class - well we saw the multimillion squad of assembled Rangers class charlatans who represented us last night and we were given a lesson by a blend of Scots and foreigners who worked their socks off - same glaring mistakes made by us and same culprits ball-watching.

In fact we are so good at ball watching I assume we practice this at training. For FREE Shankland would have improved our team/squad and not for one minute did I expect him to be a new McCoist or Hateley but he would have done a job when needed or asked - if we don't go back to basics get some decent Scots in our team we will just repeat our continuing cycle of being also rans! Glad next season I should never hear the phrase " We need to learn from this" because let's face it we have learned nothing in last X years - rinse and repeat the same errors on and off pitch. I pray we do learn and make suitable changes ASAP?.

Ally McCoist is Scottish, and he signed many Scots and Scottish based players during the years he was manager. It was one of the worst Rangers sides in living memory.

How many Scots were in the team the season Gerrard won it? Was Gerrard Scottish?

You're just looking for something to blame and have arrived at nationality.

It has nothing to do with that. It's about ability.

Couldn't agree more. Blue for me, Shankland on a free was a no brainer but some said not good enough & didn't fit our model. Sorry, but if a Scottish international striker (the best I think we have btw) who has captain experience, knows league, scores goals & does a lot of graft & plays for the team isn't good enough, well I'd love to know what is, because what we got instead of him hasn't exactly blown us away.

Season after season our snobbery about Scottish lads or lads from our league has cost us & it's high time we started learning from that & stop signing foreign lads or lower league English based players. Yes the Championship is a fantastic league but we've had more failures than successes in my opinion.

Spot on Floyd, Shankland isn't a world beater but we have 3 'strikers' that cost about 15-17 million who are nowhere near what he offers in our football.

Attitude too RWC.

05 May 2026 08:34:47
Not signing Shankland years ago was crazy. Doubt it will happen now.

Add McKenna, Mulligan to that list, and if you really want to go back in time, add Ferguson and Ross McCrorie, who should have been kept in the squad.

Absolutely agree, mate. For those that struggle to understand the importance of having a Scottish-based core to the team, just look at Hearts team yesterday. Even Gerrard had the likes of McGregor, Davis and Arfield, and others who'd been here before.

Every nation needs players from their own that get it, whether English, French, German, Spanish or the Scandinavian leagues. Their teams have a core who get it.

Only one thing guaranteed, Another clear out, Another rebuild! Another 'give it time to bed in', maybe even Another new management/coaching team.
BAU at Ibrox.

Rohlwithcheese, completely correct my friend, but it is the same nationality nonsense reached every time.

I get slated constantly for picking it up.

I wonder if you will get the same push back as I do.

05 May 2026 09:11:48
Kaiser, he needs to at least be given an opportunity to get that core, which by all accounts the club is trying to do.

We would have had more domestic players if the last British manager did not turn his nose up.

We don't have any heroes to bring back like Gerrard did with McGregor and Davis.

It annoys me when people attribute this to foreign managers.
Successive British managers refused to create a core of Scottish players.
Including Gerrard, who had the same amount of Scots in his squad as Rohl has available to him.

Excellent post Blue-Floyd 3, and imo the amount of loan players we use every season has to be looked at.

05 May 2026 10:04:11
I agree it's not about foreign managers, Aphelion. (Tho Gerrard obviously isn't Scottish either, and even Martin was almost entirely English based, and there is a big difference between English and Scottish leagues.) But I sure u would agree how damaging it would be if Brann didn't have a strong Norwegian influence, so nationality is important.

And it's been ignored for too long for us missing good players. Unfortunately having ripped it out the squad it's hard to replace in one go as there's not that many left.

05 May 2026 10:09:30
Kaiser, o has stated on numerous occasions that we should sign more domestic players.

Danny is not responsible for that.

Rohlncheese / Aph, read the text. I said blend of Scots and foreign players which worked for Jambos - Goodness me I didn't say sign also rans just because they are Scottish - we let good Scottish talent go to the continent because we feel there is more value for money in foreign buys - it is biting us on the arse now, wouldn't you say - most players yesterday showed no fight or dig or understanding what it means to play for this club and win bread and butter games when going gets tough - fact.

I think most would agree, no matter what country a team is from there should be a core or group of players from that country in the squad. I've said before, every great Gers team I've seen had a good core of Scottish lads, since that reduced, so has our success for various reasons.

We also need to find a way of developing & encorprating our youngsters into the squad, for too long, youth hasn't gotten any chance.
