Would I be right in saying someone from the club recently said there would be more focus on signing Scottish players, or players who have done well in the league?

I understand that players like Skov Olsen are required as they are a different calibre for Europe etc. but I do think there is a good balance to be had with homegrown and signing from our league. I loved the Walter smith squads. And even the wee general done well I think adding McCann, Dodds etc.

That being said I'm wondering the opinions of posters on who would be good enough.

Seen maswanhise's name being debated. I think he's do well.

If Fergie got the job I read he wanted Shankland, mulligan Cerny and Gogic. I think all made sense in the roles they would have had in the squad. Could have seen Gogic being a similar deal to big Marvin Andrews.

Bowie? Watt? Watson? Shankland?

I like the look of the boy Sapsford at Dundee United. Will ferry too.

Bowie I would take for a couple million but not the £6.5 Hibs want, Watt would probably come cheap and would be a god squad player but does he improve the starting lineup. Same goes for Watson although if he's a free I would be all over it.

Shanklands time has come for me. We had the chance to sign him on a free and didn't make the move. His stock is high just with the season him and Hearts are having but he's here on younger and Hearts will want decent money for their captain.

It depends on what we are looking at from talent within the Scottish league?
Squad player?
1st team starter?
Potential?
Most felt Cameron had a chance to shine and look how that's worked out for a variety of reasons.
Then you look at Barron before his injury.

Not the greatest talent in my eyes but his work rate made him a starter.
Miovski was a hit at Aberdeen but is struggling for us.
We have had a few failures over the last few seasons from within the Scottish league.

21 Jan 2026 14:27:31
The difference being the players advocat surrounded them with, reyna, gvb, mols, numen to name a few. If we soley signed the players you've mentioned we would probably be worse off than we currently are. You're lucky if advocat bought 4 players from here.

other than Maswanhise I am not sure there is anyone playing in the league who really improves our 1st team. Shankland might have (all opinion either way) but we have now had how many opportunities to sign him and haven't so that is a lot of football men don't think so.

Mulligan might have been competition at RB but saw him in last Hibs game vs us and our midfield kept him quiet so is that improvement.

When koppen was here he said we would sign 1 scottish player per season. that's only good if they improve squad.

21 Jan 2026 15:21:37
For me the talent in Scottish football need to prove it's not just a 1 season wonder that's why am wary of big from mwell.

21 Jan 2026 15:32:49
Don't think there's many beyond Maswanhise that would improve our starters but could improve our backups especially with so many loans and out of contracts.

21 Jan 2026 16:29:24
Storm, once again what a ridiculous thing to say! Why wouldn't you be expecting every player to have proved themselves over a period of time? Once again, the bias against Scottish based players comes shining through.

21 Jan 2026 16:41:07
I thought half of the Hearts Team walked in to our starting 11?

21 Jan 2026 16:55:25
It's a fine line between taking a chance on one season and holding off.
If they have a good one season the could buy and they boss it and we have got bargain who is sellable or they have a stinker. Jake Hastie' example
Or wait, value is up, more clubs interested. Wage demand maybe hire.

That's why the analytics is becoming even more important as you are trying to make the decision that is data based instead of a guess. That's not fool proof but is a baseline for making a decision.

EHL that was when they were on form and we weren't though. ?. most of them would hobble into our team now.

21 Jan 2026 17:36:02
EHL I discounted Hearts players as doubt they'd sell any to us now if they believe going forward they can challenge. Considering the number we have leaving and also may sell Raskin and Dio could easily see Devlin or Binigame (? ).

Milne in at full back behind new signing. Braga for Danilo. Shankland I think has come and gone, Kiziridis for Moore after his loan. Just a quick few who could certainly do a job for us as squad players at the very least.

21 Jan 2026 17:55:58
Wee Dick had his share of failures too, didn't he sign Adamczuk from Dundee who hardly kicked a ball and Allan Johnston and Paul Ritchie from Hearts ( via Man City ) who he also didn't fancy although Johnston did have one cracking game at home to Sturm Graz.

the standard in Scotland is pretty poor and there are very few that would take us to the level we want to get to.

21 Jan 2026 18:25:53
DTB it's not ridiculous. It's not my fault you don't understand it and as ehl has said on Jamestown analytics they look for more than just one season. Maybe try and broaden your mind ?

What you said is ridiculous IMO ?.

21 Jan 2026 18:28:00
Dtb no bias towards Scottish players I wanted Ferguson signed I wanted mulligan signed. But you keep posting bs ?.

21 Jan 2026 20:15:57
So to clarify then, you think it's stupid not to make sure players from everywhere aren't one season wonders? Where's that ignore button?
