Marco it was called, Footballs financial shame, the story of the v11. It was on bbc2. Danny Murphy was also on it, he turned to cocaine and alcohol through it, as its literally ruined some of them. I missed the first 20 minutes of it but was an excellent watch, pretty disturbing the lengths our government go to for money, especially knowing what happened to them. ED I think you would like it.
{Ed001's Note - I find it difficult to have sympathy with a lot of them as they were already set for life and it was just greed that they wanted more mate. Murphy certainly had no need of the extra money. But, having known Murphy for a long time, since he was playing for Crewe, I also know that he was not the brightest bulb in the box and so I also do have some sympathy with them as they were just not very bright and taken advantage of. It is one of those programmes I would watch if it was ever shown here.}

They were just young guys looking to invest there money Ed as most do as it's a short career. One player was so desperate he thought if he killed himself his wife and children would be able to remain in there house, not realising the bill would get past to his wife. I think it's unbelievable the government still go after people for tax that were victims of fraud. This was many years ago, can you imagine the dodgy characters that around all these young footballers these days, with the amount of money they have.

I don't get this 'short career' thing. It is in terms of years but their earnings are levels above most other professions.
You'd need to be really unlucky, greedy, thick or all 3 to end up skint.
I do have some sympathy for people taken advantage of though.

Ed you are out of order, we all try and make the most of what we earn by investing in the scheme that offers the best returns, the guys were financially groomed by a couple of so called friends that most definitely never lost any money.
{Ed001's Note - how is out of order? Speak for yourself, not all of us are purely motivated by money. I use my spare money to pay for my godchildren's education, to make sure they have food to eat every day and clothes on their back. Murphy was a multi-millionaire, he had no need to earn more and I like Muffat but he got greedy and was preyed on for his greed. So yes, it is wrong, but they could have just left the money in a savings account and had plenty for their family to live well.}

It's not really. As you can see from our deputy PM. It's the individual lady responsibility to ensure they are paying the correct tax. Regardless of advice they receive.
There is always risk attached to tax avoidance.

Not really got any sympathy to be honest, this short career stuff is guff, who else can retire in their early thirties, are they not allowed to work again doing something else like the rest of us.

Ed, you obviously never watched the programme and don't know what your talking about.
Shota, how many footballers retire at thirty and never work again, what about the guys that play for Livingston or Dundee are they all retiring in their thirties.
The guys were simply fleeced trying to do the right thing by trying to look after their families future. Their careers finish in their thirties but their life doesn't they still have young families to look after.

Can the guys at Livingston etc not get another job when they stop playing, I've had to retrain for jobs, it happens every day in the real world, what makes them so special, we all have to look after families.

Ed, at least I can form an opinion after watching the show, most definitely not the font of all knowledge. Just one of the many millions that trust financial and pension advisers to help us navigate complex regulations to make our hard earned cash see us to he finish line.
