If the transfer rumours are true regarding Fernandez then what do we realistically ask for. In my opinion I'd be asking for 12 to 15m mark. I know we got him cheap from posh but they have a big sell on.

Way I see transfers is after all costs are taken off you are said with x amount. Can we replace a player of the same quality or higher for that amount.

If the Tims can turn down 25mill for their rubbish bag, I'm sure 30 plus, if Big Manny continues to flourish.

23 Feb 2026 15:30:51
I'll still be very pleasantly surprised if we sell him for double figures over the summer. I still think there's some work to be done with him, and another season we'll see that sort of money. I'll be happy if he goes for that money. It would be great for both the club and player, but I just don't see it as of today.

25 million, a goal-scoring cb. That's the end of this season. Next, if he continues, I would say more.

23 Feb 2026 17:10:05
Depends on what sell-on percentage we would need to pay. Realistically, he is still very raw and makes mistakes, but with the way money is down south, I would be looking at starting at £10M+. Not sure what Wolves value Djiga at?

23 Feb 2026 18:11:41
I think we need to try to keep hold of him for at least another year or 2. He's young and has a ton of potential, and he's a goal threat.

23 Feb 2026 18:44:55
Same as Bassey, no less for me. Goal-scoring cbs are in demand with the move back to big players.

23 Feb 2026 19:02:20
This boy has tons of potential. We need him, as Rohl keeps persisting with Chermiti, and Fernandez has proven he's more of a threat than him.

23 Feb 2026 20:06:47
Does anyone know what the sell-on clause is? The Peterborough chairman, I'm sure, described it as 'hefty'. I think this may determine what we'd want for him. If it's 30% and we sold for £10m, we paid 3.5 for him, Peterborough would get £3m, so that would leave us with a 3.5m profit.

Not sure that would make a lot of sense for us to sell at that price.

23 Feb 2026 22:11:33
As I understand it, there is a very large sell-on percentage due to the Posh. So, if we sold him for 10M, we bought him for 3.5M; we pay 30% as per the clause. We make about 3M.

I know the numbers above are not perfect, but the logic is the same. We'd need a bid of 20+ for me to consider it, unless there are clauses in the sell-on to whomever buys him from us.

23 Feb 2026 22:24:58
It would be 30% of the profit from what we originally bought him for, Souness. Not the total sale. So, if we got him for 3.5m and sold him for 10.5m, then it would be 30% of the 7m profit, which would be 2.1m.

It's 20% on profit, so 1.4 million, considering he is on small add-ins at this stage. Changes if he gets a competitive cap and CL group.

Thanks for the info, Orange & John. ??

I'm amazed there even is a sell-on. They couldn't believe we paid as much as we did to begin with. They managed to insert a sell-on fee on top of that fee? Sounds like whoever negotiated that deal, from a Rangers perspective, did a poor job of it.

24 Feb 2026 13:11:05
Rohl, so we get a player who, after a season, we could sell him for £10million and make a profit of £5m after fee and sell on. That seems good business to me for that period of time.

He is also playing well, which has caused the fee to increase from what we paid for him.
If those suggesting players continue to work like that, we will be in a good place.

24 Feb 2026 13:49:26
Angus, you also need to consider how we have struggled to find good cb options over the years.

I really don't see how we should ask any less than we did for Bassey.

24 Feb 2026 18:36:36
Forever, I don't want to sell him short and wasn't suggesting a price, just that buying him for that price and a sell-on was good business, and a deal we should be trying to repeat several times a season.

24 Feb 2026 20:01:07
My understanding is we are already looking at a new contract and removing sell on, basically paying a fee to Portsmouth.

24 Feb 2026 22:31:13
True, Angus, that would be the ideal, but we are still rebuilding right now.

25 Feb 2026 03:24:09
I don't think you understand my point at all, Angus.

How well Fernandez has done for Rangers, and what he will sell for in the future, is completely irrelevant. The point is, when Rangers purchased him from Peterborough, their fans thought we had overpaid for this player. To have overpaid (at that time), and have had a sell-on clause inserted, seems like poor negotiating from our end, something that could cost this club millions in the future.

When Rangers purchased Chermiti, that was £8m with a sell-on clause. I would suggest we overpaid in that instance too. You say you want several deals like the Fernandez one, Chermiti is structured similarly.

Big initial fee with a sell-on.

I'm not talking about the ability of players, or what they might go on to be worth once here. I'm talking about what we paid last summer when recruiting these players. What was their value then? You seem to be pointing at player ability now and confusing that with the value of the initial business, and saying, 'We should be doing more deals like that', or 'We shouldn't be doing more deals like that'.

£3.5m for Fernandez seems like more than a fair price for the player at that time. The fact they were able to insert a sell-on seems like Rangers failed to negotiate the best value deal, which could be said of several summer signings.

Currently, I would value Fernandez at 15 mill euros. He is not just a goal-scoring CB; he is now the top goal-scoring CB in all of Europe. Not on Bassey's level of defending as yet, they are two very different styles. Bassey is far higher level as an out-and-out defender, with lower scoring potential. Fernandez, on the other hand, is very dangerous in the box from set pieces and offers a bigger attacking threat.
If we win the league and cup, minimum 20 mill euros valuation for Fernandez. Personally, I would keep him for another season. Sustained success comes from retaining your best performers, not by selling as soon as their value increases. We are not skint these days, and Fernandez has been our best CB since Bassey and Goldson left.

Trophy-winning, successful, solid CBs don't come our way often. How many replacements will we buy until we find others capable of Bassey and Fernandez levels?
I thought the 3.5 mill we paid was a bargain, and I was one of the few who wanted him in the team from the first game he was available. No coincidence he was not named in the European squads twice, and was on the bench for eight more European games. Imagine our best CB being wasted in the stand or on the bench while we got beaten in nearly every game.
It took until Rohl came in and spotted his qualities and potential for Fernandez to get his proper chance. Shocking decision by prior management to let him rot for that long.
